Sigh ~ Frank Zappa Hologram Tour

So sad.

He also opined that he'd like to see hologram collaborations with some of his siblings, who have been bitterly feuding with him. "Also, how radical would it be to have Moon singing 'Valley Girl' onstage with Frank?" he said. "Or to see Dweezil side by side with our father playing dueling guitar solos? That would be my greatest wish and I look forward to bringing this special celebration of Frank's legacy to a town near you."

Yeah......   No.

I like his vagina pants.

They' re trying to pull this off while Dweezil is in Europe.

Akin to North Korea attacking us on the weekend, during CNN's Fredricka Whitfield shift.

Would he hate it or love it?  He was a mixed media kinda guy. Think Baby Snakes.  My guess is he would like it if he started the idea. Not so much if the Mothers did.  I can see a hologram of him conducting the band.

What scares me is this might be the start of a big trend.

That article brought up a lot of family issues in the Zappa clan.

If it looks anything like this.....  lame

https://youtu.be/7eiWahgEnFg

The article says it will be a theatrical performance of Joe's garage with a hologram of frank in the role of the central scrutinizer. That actually makes it almost acceptable.  Bottom line is Frank was a  master and is a legend. He deserves to be remembered as much as any other famous composer.

Encore:Gail Hologram giving Frank a dynamo hum...

I was just reading about this. What bothers me the most is how they made Dweezil stop using the Zappa Plays Zappa band name & he actually has the skills. This seems pathetic to me.

totally pathetic re. Dweezil

The whole dweezil lawsuit was probably just an undercover job to get free press about the tour. Very sneaky...

“I’m thrilled that Frank Zappa will finally be going back out on tour playing his most well-known music as well as some rare and unheard material,” said Ahmet Zappa, co-Trustee of the Zappa Family Trust. “We can’t wait to bring his creative work back to the stage with the musicians he loved to play with, such as Steve Vai, Ian Underwood, Adrian Belew, Arthur Barrow, Vinnie Colaiuta, Scott Thunes, Mike Keneally, Denny Walley, Warren Cuccurullo and Napoleon Murphy Brock among others who are committed to being part of this epic endeavor. When I spoke with them, they were excited at the prospect of performing alongside Frank once again and can’t wait to give fans an unforgettable experience.”

Can that lineup just tour without the holo-Frank?

id pay good money

Me too, E.

Love Zappa

Love Joe's Garage acts 1-3

Love Dweezil tribute to dad

Hologram Frank makes me sick

You can pick your friends but you can't pick your family

Pretty big band of hacks.

What will the hologram do?

Yeah, that lineup of musicians who played with Zappa would definitely make for a great show.

What about Ike and Ray? Fuck joes garage

I believe Ray White is playing with Banned From Utopia.

I'd go for just Vinnie Colaiuta. Not crazy about the hologram.

>>What will the hologram do?<<

[CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER:]
This is the CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER...it is my responsibility to enforce all the laws
that haven't been passed yet. It is also my responsibility to alert each and every one of
you to the potential consequences of various ordinary everyday activities you might be
performing which could eventually lead to The Death Penalty (or affect your parents'
credit rating). Our criminal institutions are full of little creeps like you who do wrong things...
and many of them were driven to these crimes by a horrible force called MUSIC! Our studies
have shown that this horrible force is so dangerous to society at large that laws are being
drawn up at this very moment to stop it forever! Cruel and inhuman punishments are
being carefully described in tiny paragraphs so they won't conflict with the Constitution
(which, itself, is being modified in order to accommodate THE FUTURE).

lot of virtual corpses to hump

^Only two more Beatles left before a reunion tour.

Lip sinking was bad once.

What's the ugliest part of a hologram's body?

^Some say its nose

Some say its toes

But I think it's Ahmet's mind.

Dweezil is already stating on social media that he is not interested in taking part in this

Hey Ahmet --- it's not a fuckin hologram, OK. Just cause it looks 3D doesn't mean squat. Some lying salesman probably called it that, but it's just digitized movie footage projected unto a screen that appears invisible to a viewer some distance away. And you perpetuate the lie to sell tickets. it's a high tech version of an old, rather simple optical illusion.  It may be a cool thing to see, but it doesn't meet the definition of a hologram.

Princess Leia being beamed into the room in Star Wars wasn't based on scientific fact you rock and roll genius -- it was a movie special effect. A real holographic image can look 3D, but it can't be projected onstage like you say cause very simply, photons don't just stop and float. And laser beams don't cross in mid air and look like solid objects. Not how light works.

You could make a holographic portrait of Frank if he were alive to sit in the pulsed laser studio, but it would  be a stationary portrait, probably monochromatic and with a limited viewing angle. You can make holograms using movie footage, but the viewer has to look thru a small "window" of film to see the limited animation. Not meant for theatrical presentations.

Anyway, end of "please use correct scientific vocabulary" rant --- stupidity reigns. If I ever get caught with a nitrous tank I guess I can just strap it upside down on my back and call it a jet pack.

DUMB Then Again I Have Never Heard A Zappa Tune Ever In My Life And Never Will.  Frankly I Can't Stand The Guy

>>>Frankly

How do u know if u don't like his music if you've never heard it?

I'd go just to hear those guys play Watermelon in Easter Hay

will this be a real hologram or a sears hologram?

Ahmet has turned into The Idiot Bastard Snake Oil Salesman Son.

Hologram this.

Soooooooooo, hologram Frank plays the Central Scrutinizer. That would make him holo-Frank, or more appropriately, hollow-Frank. Well, the Central Scrutinizer only had dialog in Joe's Garage, so that would make guitar solos out of the question if hollow-Frank plays the part of the CS.

I love Frank, was fortunate enough to have seen him a bunch of times. But to me, it was always about the guitar. I realize he was extremely talented in many different capacities, but his guitar playing soared above everything else. The idea of an improvised guitar break during a song seems impossible with this hollow-Frank format, so count me out.

To think one of Frank's mottos was 'No commercial potential'.  This is a pathetic money-grab.

^i'm hoping that with Vai, Belew, Keneally, Walley, and Cuccurullo there are enough guitarists to cover all guitar parts. Although, I'd like to see ike Willis join the lineup.  Let hologram Frank narrate.

Is the hologram created with a Telefunkin U 47?

and I am not convinced that Ahmet is the bad guy here

it does appear that Dweezil's whole musical existence is replicating Frank and he is in the family trust, and I am sure he has drawn funds from that family trust, so why shouldn't he kick down when he gets down?

I don't understand it but for some reason it seems like only Ahmet and diva r in charge of the ZFT.

dweezil makes it sound likes he has to come out of pocket for the all things ZPZ related but the ZFT still wants a cut, which I guess Gail gave him a pass on when she was alive.

^i believe that the trust got 100% of ZPZ merchandising revenue.

Could easily b the case, lord knows Dweezil don't think the arrangement is fair

I also know that Gail left this world with the trust in a very shitty place. Ahmet is no slouch when it comes to business, and is doing what he can to save it. Some of the money from zpz should go to the trust, they were kind enough to only charge him $1 for the rights to play franks music.

Yes to IKE! is he alive? Sorry if not. And maybe some Bozzio. I just loved Zappa's guitar. When I saw him, the stage show was fun but like JerryH,  I went to hear the guy play. At the Tower there was a long extended part of the center stage. It stuck out like 20' it seemed.  In the middle of a song, when he wanted, he would walk out to the end and rip out a sick solo in a spotlight.  THOSE were the moments.

I agree with u, joe, that it's not as black and white as Dweezil might make it seem.

i think a lot of it boils down to control issues and the argument of what's more essential to the fz legacy: restoring the vault or continuing to perform the catalog live and how much $ goes to, and is made by, those things and by whom.

there aren't a lot of easy answers to these things.

A fellow who restores Axes,  Hatchets  and so forth came by the Farm the other day (I bought an  Adze of his through the 'retail outlet') -- anyway I noticed a "Project Object'  sticker on his vehicle.   We were discussing FZ and various modern interpretations,  and that was the first I heard about the new policy of no 'Zappa Plays Zappa'  name.

Anyway,  I told him of the time I  headed up for Project Object at the Crystal Ballroom in PDX.  Gail Z had called or faxed or otherwise communicated w/ the venue threatening catastrophy,  resulting in the cancellation of the show.  Which was terrible,  as they had a terrific lineup back then.  It was sorta last minute, so I had already driven up to Portland.  We had to find other stuff to do.

I did manage to catch  a couple/ few of their Eugene shows back then.  Apparently,  Gail harbored a 'strong dislike' towards Ike W.

No one strangled a guitar the way zappa did live, well no one that I ever seen anyways. And like the others have said, it was cool watching him hand sign the band to change tempo, or style in which they played, or watch him pour a cup of coffee from a thermos and sit back and drink it while the band played or even smoke a butt while they played, but when he did pick up that axe, things got mutilated.

Dweezil is now promoting these t shirts

"Fake music isn't the best".

The Girl On The Bus

I don't know if I want to get involved in this family battle gone public, but in an effort to understand it, here is the latest link I've seen on the ZFT, alleged cease & desist orders, and the god-forsaken holo-Frank.:

http://www.jambands.com/news/2017/10/06/ahmet-zappa-responds-to-dweezil/

Ahmet sounds like he's being reasonable, but who knows what has really gone down here?

I only know 2 things about Dweezil.:

1) He's got ferocious chops.

2) He spent 25 minutes out of a one hour set at Gathering Of The Vibes whining and moaning to the audience about the poor quality of the sound system, actually stopping mid-song to kvetch at points. The same sound system was used by some 30 other acts with no glitches or complaints from other artists. To me, Dweezil came off as a whiny, unprofessional, spoiled little shit.

Attacking the Dweez on a public message board when you make your living playing his music?

Pot meet kettle.

How does someone 'make [their] living' programming music on a community-funded radio station?

Please to explain Java Dave, tx.

I don't see it as an attack, first of all. I'm just reporting what I saw, and my response to it.

I don't "make a living" in my radio work, I am a longtime volunteer.

I haven't played "Dweezil's" music since that display he put on at Vibes. Left a foul impression on me.

^any word on keyboards?
