By a private company/person? I'm assuming if it was government, you wouldn't hear anything...
Talking about a landline.. repeatedly hear things like a phone dialing a number, clicks like a phone hung up, and sometimes an echo effect.
i don't have a landline anymore, asking for a friend.

Everybody knows that already. 'They' can probably read your lips from the satellites.
Take a hint from the USSR-era privacy advocates... while you converse (knowing that every room is bugged) write down your private thoughts on bits of paper, and burn those with the candle.

For the digitally Paranoid, research "Tempest" software ca. late-80's. Not the video arcade game, but a spyware to monitor the signal between keyboard and PC, and log keystrokes. Directional antenna aimed at the wire between those objects from adjacent skyscraper windows.
Supposedly named for some Shakespeare reference like "Tempest In A Teapot" ??

I'd like to point out that the folks I'm talking about don't have cell phones, Siri, computers that you can talk to, and still have the old dial-up internet. They're also in the biggest homeland security strong-hold in WA state. Their adjacent neighbor worked for the state dept., and their other neighbor was fired from homeland security.. it's not totally implausible that someone is tapping their phone.. although like I said, I suspect a private citizen, not the government, or there'd be no trace of it audibly in the line.
