Skateboarding!

Forums:

I've been having a lot of fun rekindling my love for skateboarding this year.  It feels so good to be out on my board; pushing, coasting, anticipating.  Just being.  I first started getting into it in the spring and summer of 2000 when I was 13 years old and started focusing on it more over the coming years as it became my primary hobby/activity outside of organized sports.  I remember all the neighborhood kids going through their phases of different things we'd get into but I always focused on skating... I realized that if you want to get better you can't really spread yourself too thin and you need to practice.  Practice alot.  Shit, man... I seriously tried to land a kickflip everyday for 8 straight months.. I could get the board to flip but I couldn't get my foot back to land on it.  After a while I could kickflip then switch kickflip then double kickflip.  I think that sort of self starter work ethic or whatever primed me for my adventures right now in music.  We used to be out there in the dead of winter shoveling snow... letting pavement dry... sweeping everything and then skating.  Those days our falls hurt- hands cracking under stress from pavement mashing.

Here I am today at 30 years old- my passion for skating largely replaced by my obsession with guitar.  I think I'm going through a sort of personal renaissance right now or whatever.  Feeling very healthy with my mind/body/spirit right now which is just an incredible relief given some health issues I've had to deal.

My Dad and I built this mini ramp in '05:

Good times on the mini ramp.  We built it after we moved into our new house in a different town (JKlowan you may remember this).  It was pretty cool having such a sick ass ramp in my driveway.

I've had this rail through thick and thin.  It's 2" x 2" which I dig.. always thought the CCS rail was too wide for my liking.

Falling when your 30 aint like when your 18.

I last trick skated 13 years ago when I broke my ankle at 40.

Now its all about the long board

Part Deux

This summer has been a lot of fun using my new Go Pro to shoot with.  I have so many hours of old skate videos from old camcorders I would love to digitize... the Go Pro and its simplicity is beautiful and has been so enriching for me in many ways.  I have a hard drive of home videos of my family and daughter now that's constantly growing.  For the holidays this year I'm gonna buy everyone their own hard drive and have all our home videos on them and keep updating it so everyone has memories they can sit and enjoy.  Speaking of my daughter, she loves being on my board.  Straight up:

These ramps are cool.  They're in downtown Providence.  These local kids jumped through all the necessary hoops to pull permits and get contractors in to build these ramps in what was a dilapidated little alley with bums sleeping.  It's not really a skate park officially but just some ramps that exist in the city scape.  Me digs.

Been having so much fun with my babygirl.  She's at an age now where I'm able to horse around with her a bit more now and it's great:

This week is my daughter's Mom's birthday and she had mentioned to me how she wanted a long board so I managed to put something together with a guy on craigslist for a sweet bamboo Sector 9:

Boards.jpg

Hers is up top.  My board in the lower.  That NO SKATING sign is woodburned.  A buddy of mine stole that from somewhere growing up and I've tried so hard to find this guy and cannot locate him.. he knows more about the origin of it than I do and I'd like for him to have it.  It's funny to me that I can't get ahold of this guy today with all our technological means.

When meeting the guy from Craigslist, he goes "I'm outside in the tie dye shirt".  Go out there and it's a super tanned kid my age with long curly blond hair and cut off jean shorts and a cool Dead shirt I've never seen before.  He was from California and visiting family in RI and wanted to sell his extra board.  He was thoroughly excited at the notion of his board being gifted to my kid's Mom.  Later that night I rode it around and it smelled like sage.  Too perfect.

I guess the kicker to all of this is yesterday I was out with my daughter and, while packing her into the car, I managed to forget my board on the sidewalk and drove off.  Board's gone.  I went to sleep last night hoping whoever had it appreciates it though.

Some rail tricks and a few flip tricks:

My favorite trick- fakie 360 big flip.  Check out my candid excitement haha:

nice pics Jay.    I had similar experience to Tim, only wrist.  All I could do just to ride one.  cute kid.

Lager is really good.  I think he used to be an Am for a company (maybe Alien Workshop).  Always have loved it but never been great at it.  I can grind or slide some curbs or ledges and Ollie some stairs but never could reliably land any flip tricks.

I skated most my life, but broke my right hand when i was about 30 years old, trying to feeble a 12 stair.  It was pretty fucking debilitating not being able to write or use my primary hand, as an adult.

I basically never skated again in that capacity.  Still skate for transportation fairly often.

She is the cutest little skater! Good for you, Jay.

Sorry about your board.

>>Falling when your 30 aint like when your 18.

It's def a little different but I'm holding.

I think I'm going to Lake Okeechobee area for work soon.  Not sure how close that is to you.

>>trying to feeble a 12 stair

Ouch.  I used to feeble with the board aimed up a bit more and my friends called it a salad grind.

12 stairs? Damn.  I havent hit stairs in years.  Largest set I ever ollied was 8.

>>She is the cutest little skater!

Thanks!!!

About an hour

careful of the red necks

Does anyone just ride one down a big-ass hill at a ludicrous speed anymore?

Our only trick was dodging traffic.

Oh.  And pebbles.

hit a pebble haulin ass with a fishing pole and a bucket, I think I flew 200 yards and landed in the grass and buried a fishing hook in my palm.....good times

Yea it's called long boarding.  See the Sector 9 photo.  Those things haul ass and aren't designed for tricks.

I fell HARD on a pebble going fast last month jusssst before I took this video.  Cool ocean scenery in this one:

My buddy's on a long board.  Note how loud my hard, shitty-ass wheels are compared to his.

..bump for some new skate content.  I know there are some folks on here who enjoy seeing this stuff:  Everything is shot via tripod so no cool ride-along shots.
