My 4 Runner Runs Excellent poindexter....

Isn't a 1984 exempt from the emissions part of the quiz?

I feel your pain Mr. PLF.

Subaru (new to me, 20 years old Legacy Outback Wagon) threw a CEL couple weeks ago.  Code scan revealed P0303 P0304 meaning 'misfire in cylinder #3 & #4. That could be many things,  but likely spark plug / wire issues.  It's actually running Fine.  Last guy who worked on it has 'Autolite' brand wires,  who knows what plugs.  Subaru likes NGK brand or Subaru OEM for these parts.  Fussy engine.

Anyway I cleared the CEL by removing the battery cable.  Jerseyland inspection is just 'Smog' / emissions these days.  But the Check Engine Light is 'fail' even if tailpipe emission test is fine.  From what I've read the 1997 computer retains memory enough to get ya failed;  100 + miles and 4-5 'driving events' you're good to go.

On the 1996 Tacoma (2.7 Liter 3RZFE) I could clear the CEL and go through 'SMOG'  and get my sticker.

The Suby is a 1997.  I'm going to go through early and see what happens.  If I'm clean then it will have good sticker through 9/ 2019.

Thing runs great and has no oil-burning or exhaust-stank problems.  Once it passes 'SMOG' it will be 'Grandfathered'  and not need inspection again in NJ.

So I've put 1000 + miles on the 'Outback' since the fresh Oil change.  The CEL coincidentally happened when I drove it  about 77 MPH on the Freeway for a few minutes.  It's a Grandma-mobile and does not want to go over 70 I suppose.

Although it did fine,  that's when the ECU reported misfire in the two back cylinders.

Of course I want to change the plugs and wires for proper NGK stuff,  but the way they have it set up on the DOHC 2.5 Liter,  you need to remove the battery and wiper-fluid reservoir,  no shit. Plugs are  on the sides of the motor about mid-wheel level.  Not much clearance to get a socket & ratchet in there.

The  Subaru "Boxer" engine.  Most Subaru freaks agree that the 1996-1999 2.5 DOHC was the absolute worst engine that Subaru produced.  Mainly the notorious Head Gasket problem.  The universal Fix is to replace with a similar vintage 2.2 Liter (non - interference) for reliability with less HP.  I'm not in the Rockies or Cascade Range, so that could work out for me.

However for now,  it's a Cheapo running wagon with electric windows & Cruise Control,  and the Tape Deck works great wink

its minor on my side my mechanic will dial smiley

Nice ride, Plf, and you should be proud of the way you have maintained the truck.

Remember that old Midas commercial where the guy pulls up to red light. A beautiful Italian woman pulls up of next to the guy in an Italian sports car.

They have an  eye and facial flirt attraction for the full length of the red light sort of like Chevy Chase and Christie Brinkley in the Vacation movie.

The light turns green. The gorgeous woman says loudly in a heavy Italian accent, " Yooo muffla get it feexed!"

Guy frowns and narrator ust says , " Midas Mufflers."

Shit I found it, not quite the way I remember it but sort of close.
