Some may remember Arthur Ashe the tennis great.  Besides being a great pro he operated a sports research foundation. 

They addressed the prevelance of African Americans in sports in the modern era. 

Some conclusions:

For every white family pushing a kid towards upper level sports there are ten black families.

Historical precedent is entertainment and sports were among the first areas available to blacks in a racist society.  Teacher/preacher if college was available.

 Other stuff but my memory is fuzzy. 

As for Asian kids being the smartest that is a cultural stereotype. Very complicated.  I taught many Asian kids.  Just like all groups talent exists.  So dies mediocrity. Family dynamics, in some families the second son or daughters are not favored. The longer they are in the US the more that breaks down of course, like all immigrant groups.  They become American kids fir the good and not so good sometimes.

Another wrinkle is historical.  The two world cultures who developed literacy earliest are Chinese ( around 7,000 years) and Jewish (around 5,800, my numbers are approximate) so that is a serious head start in the brain game.

Truth is, academically gifted students exist in all cultures and is all places.  Don't be fooled by stereotype and limited personal anecdotal "evidence".

I would say there are no hard and fast rules, always exceptions, but there are patterns we cant really ignore. Id talk about the Nature vs. Nurture. Then Id say great question.  Lets talk more about it as you get older.

I went to a very good High School and took the Math courses all the way through Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calc and Calculus.

The Chinese kids were always the top performers.  It's easy to say "They worked harder" but having co-existed with them for 5 years, I would definitely say that they are racially superior at Math.  While that might be a controversial statement, it was my personal experience at the time.

The Korean kids were pretty good and worked hard, but not score 99% or so each exam.

The Chinese kids in your school probably were not a representative sample of all Chinese. They were the relatively rich, well fed and cared for children of immigrants.

(I'm not commenting on the possible superiority of Asians over all peoples, just the sampling method.)

I don't have the answers, but if one is stereotyping any race or group from a geographical area, go to the source.

I would want to look at stats from the entire continent of Africa:  Maybe a disproportionate amount of Africans who were abducted and taken to the Americas were bigger, stronger, more athletic than the general population.  I'm thinking about the "pigmy" people like Aka, Efé and Mbuti, for example.

For stereotypes about "Asians" I'd like to find out what the difference is between those who have successfully immigrated into the USA vs the general population.  Would it be safe to assume that US Immigration would have a bias towards the more highly educated adults who would like to move into our country?

And, of course, attainable success should be considered regarding current USA citizens, related to community, resources, etc.

Again, no concrete answers from me, but proposed questions.

The Hüsky is not really a fighting Dog.  While mine grew up with Pit Bulls as mentors, he is too good-natured for the purpose of being a guard-dog or such.

So he's definitely capable of defending himself, but totally non-aggressive.

And Ender is correct; those Chinese kids who always kicked ass at math were from family backgrounds that cultivated academic success to an extreme.

Their parents were Surgeons, Doctors or Doctorate types. They were definitely quite competitive not just in Math, but other subjects.

Asian immigrants immigrated to Hawaii first and worked on plantations, later they were used as a source of cheap labor during the gold rush working in the mines, factories and to build the transcontinental railway. would be curious to know how well educated there immigrants were in their home countries. obviously hard working people, as are most immigrants.

The current Asian immigrants are wealthy, essentially buying citizenship - along with real estate, at least here in California. the new upper class in China are looking for investments, and US citizenship - most speak English better than people born here - and are well educated, aka smart which I attribute that to their wealth. that's not to say all rich people are 'smart' - they have the means to pay for the best education money can buy. so yes, they value education, more so than many Americans - regardless of wealth.

I was just reporting the conclusion of the Ashe Foundation's research.  My limited anecdotal experience from teaching in majority black schools was that sports is a very big deal and many are counting on a career.

I would advise them to think of sports as a ticket to a scholarship.  For the most part my students came from poverty impacted families during that part of my practice.
