Some good photos of 12/28/84

Forums:

I saw the 28th and NYE. My only NYE shows which were epic IMO. The 29th Steve Parrish' wife and child died in a car accident. I imagine NYE were memorials.

First Day Tripper.

IWT.

Fun shows, but also palpable with the heaviness of Parrish's tragedy, which everyone seemed to know about.

Plus, I've always liked the SF/BG Civic more than the Oakland Aud/Kaiser.

And well into the 21st century the Civic continues to rock. Which is far out.

NYE '84

IWT. I imagine many of us Zoners were.

Yes, fun shows and yes, heavy. There was some powerful music, as I recall.

It waas good to be there.

I love that Shakedown.

Hey Lance. Curious why you preferred SF Civic over Oakland Auditorium.  I always thought Oakland was a perfect place for the GD weirdness.  Civic seemed more cavernous with more dead spots in sound. Although I had way too much fun in both places.

Same capacity but Civic is smaller with better sightlines, WAY easier to move around, easier in & out, in my experience ALWAYS better sound around the building, with significantly better zones of great, loud & clear sound compared to the generally muddy, boomy sound of the cavernous Auditorium (much deeper with a higher ceiling) and downtown San Francisco compared to downtown Oakland???

Plus, no sweaty walls & floors.

I love the Oakland Auditorium/Kaiser and have had many great experiences there, but the Civic is simply a better venue, and time has proven that to be true.

Is that Vince Welnick in the pic labeled volleyball032?

Wait, volleyball?

I have a painful memory of rhe Civic from a Keith Richards show.  Had great seats down front and the sound was just awful. I wandered upstairs and sound was crystal clear.  Weird.

I do agree with you regarding access and getting around.  Hallways at Kaiser could be a hot mess between crowds and spinners.  But the insanity was part of the appeal.

I asked the same question if that was Vince.

Yeah and they played volleyball. One city played another city.

oakland aud, i seem to remember peeps actually camping outside the bldg during the nye run(s) and flying speakers to the shutouts?

Great Mardi Gras/Chineese ny runs at that joint. and my favorite nye 12-31-81 with  Set 4  Darkstar>Bertha...

NYE 81 was tremendous throughout.  Cippolina after drums and DS>Bertha > Good Lovin to end the night (or morning?).  A top 3 show for me.

"I love the Oakland Auditorium/Kaiser and have had many great experiences there"

It was a great venue for the band after Winterland closed. Many great shows from August 79 on.

Plus,  being an East Bay kid it was an easy access venue for me and my friends.

Thanks for posting that Shakefown NYE vid doolittle ,Great shower n coffee riser

Really liked the 12/28 show, saw all 7 NYE shows at the SF Civic, this is my favorite. Debut of Tons of Steel, Day Tripper, & Bobby's Howlin' Wolf Superstitious/Bottom medley.  West LA>>Might As Well set closer smoked.
