Some total stranger's name is on my tax bill ....

Forums:

So a particular bill (the house tax) came a few months ago, I couldn't help noticing that the bill was jointly addressed to me and (not going to use the person's real name, so I'll call her) Bambi Velvet - complete stranger, a person I do not know, and have never even heard of. Doesn't seem to have any local connections even (but maybe - all I did was google her name, maybe she's friends with (?) one of the neighbors or something... idk.... not worth a full-out stalk session at least not yet, lol)

Back to a few months ago, at which time I called the Town Clerk's office, explained the situation and the worker didn't know who it was either, and said she was deleting it.

However, in rummaging a low-priority pile of mail (low-priority mail = mail that is not a check.) - so yah rummaging, I mean filing important paperwork, I found the receipt, - dated from like a month after the phone call when Bambi Velvet's name was supposedly deleted from the database.

But the receipt was addressed to me & Bambi just like the tax bill....  she was not successfully deleted, or was added back in.... Just spoke to the person at the Town Clerk's office who confirmed that Bambi Velvet is listed as a co-owner of my house, on the tax rolls....

The clerk just went ahead & deleted the name from her database again - as she did in December of last year too, so idk..... is this type of thing a common scam, and how does it work? (I'm going to be 60 pretty soon, maybe it's a technique to scumbags use to prey on the elderly or whatever)

Oops gotta run out for a minute, I'll leave the tab open so I don't get all distracted & space out this thread, but what do you guys think?

Btw she isn't a previous owner. Also, I believe it has never been rented out to anyone.

brb

Probably just some porno actress who makes movies in your house when you're away.

A clerk can't just delete a name/co-owner if it's on the title. That would require a Quit Claim Deed or something similar.

Request a chain of title, and that will show all changes to the ownership etc.

If it shows Bambi on the title since you bought the property, go to the title company that facilitated the closing.

^i was just gonna say same thing...theyd have to prove now (even if its obviously a mistake) that she doesnt own house...

Id just ask them to delete me too, while theyre at it...let bambi pay my taxes....(just kidding, of course)

haha I know I did use sort-of a porn star name.... but the Bambi pseudonym was actually inspired by a peacefully relaxing encounter I had much earlier today, with some of the Bambis - those sweet-tempered, adorable ruminants that often frequent certain parts of the yard.... today for example, is the day set aside for them to gracefully nibble the tops off (I believe) a big swath of day-lilies, which evidently taste best at a particular optimal moment of the year (i.e, right now before they bloom, because it's obviously none of my business what color the flowers are)..-- I could tell it tasted good by the looks on their cute little faces ya know.....

Interesting! And this would totally explain why the name wasn't just taken off the first time I called. Although, it doesn't explain why they told me it was being deleted... this particular clerk seems totally unaware that she lacks authority to make the change - just told me earlier today (again) that she was deleting it from the system "as we speak" .... which is basically the same thing they said when I first brought it to their attention months ago, followed by not deleting it.

That's been quite a while ago now, but I guess I can look at the paperwork & see the name of the title company-- It's a little weird though! I bought this property a while back, 2011 (!) -- and the tax bills & receipts have been totally normal looking this whole time, until suddenly, Ms. Velvet's name showed up on the most recent bill (December 2016).

Guess I didn't realize people could just do something like that - or that anyone would even if they could. Do I want to know what their motive might be?

In fact does anyone know, is this an emergency of any kind, could it be super time sensitive? Like if her name is on the tax bill for x amount of time, it becomes her property?

(Doubt that it makes a difference, but there's no indication of her attempting to pay any of the bill.)

When it's a mistake they will delete it. No need to record anything on the deed as the deed book will show no such person as an owner.  A computer data base is only as accurate as the people entering in the info.  Unfortunately this scenario happens way to often but is usually corrected with a phone call, or two.  If the clerk is that inept hopefully your town will not do a reevaluation anytime soon --- outside vendors, inept town employees and recent sales make for a clusterfuck.

Im no expert, just a tinfoil hat guy. But what if it were possible for someone to add their name to a title/deed whatever and then when the nice owner person passes (no time soon of course!), they step in and grab the property? Can someone do that? I dunno but its worth fixin. 2011, you should be able to find title company hopefully.

Absolutely.

If it's simply a clerical error, then yes.

There's a process to record a deed change.  Anything is possible but normally inaccuracies on tax bills etc. are clerical errors.

A old porno star lived in my house before I bought it.   Found dirty mags in the attic, and her license behind the dryer.   House was wired with multiple phone lines in every room.

I would not be comfortable if her name was on my tax bill.  Good luck removing Bambi for good.

Did you have any major work done on your home in the time just before this appeared? If so, it's possible that the contractor, legitimately or not, has put a lien on your home, although you should have been notified. It's usually for failing to completely pay for work done.

You're making me wanna change my fab new name...

You'll get it figured out. Fuck that doe!

Any tax liens in the title history?
