Songs with no words

Forums:

Are these alright?

You seem to be experiencing some sort of a crisis of faith.

All these sorts of songs are OK. You're OK. You'll get through this.

I prefer them.

Great to listen to while reading and writing.

Also good to focus on the rhythm and groove without the additional stimuli of words.

...aren't really songs, are they?

would 'the mexican hat dance' be considered a song or a tune?

i'm not a musician nor a musicologist; just an enthusiast.

Are the best.

>> ...aren't really songs, are they?

This reminded me of something that John Fahey said about Charley Patton, how there would be these dances where Patton would perform and he wouldn't even be playing a guitar; he would just get the people all riled and whooped up and dancing just by doing a clap or a stomp, and the rhythm would be so infectious.

I think of "Tico Tico" as a song, and most of the stuff I listen to doesn't have any lyrics, but all of the tracks are usually registered with BMI or another performance rights organization, so..
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Embryonic Journey seems to work ok...

Are songs without words "tunes"? Compositions? Instrumentals? I don't know the answers, but have been thinking about it since reading the subject of the thread.

BMI makes a distinction between songwriters and composers for people joining BMI: "Join the top songwriters and composers who have chosen BMI to ensure they get paid when their music gets played." Does that clarify anything? I have no idea.

I use to have BMI rights on a bunch of songs, my buddy Brady was VP for a long time...

>>Are songs without words "tunes"? Compositions? Instrumentals? I

ASCAP says  compositions; with-or-with-out-lyrics - registered with ASCAP or not.

BMI is now defunct and a Sony front & all the data on the net is incorrect and far from current.

UMG is very interesting.  Last week they man handled some ® for Jerry Garcia from the GD. Looks like they did not have digital tools and went to copy write court with the actual song books in hand. Old school shit.

It brought a tear to my eye & it does now, that this mammoth -UMI has had a bad rap- had to step on some toes. Warner Brothers just bowed there, head "This Grateful Dead show is Jerry's show-stand the Fuck Back all"

Bluelight, the last paragraphs you wrote, starting with "UMG", are pretty confusing to me. I have no idea what you're saying... if it matters to you, could make them clearer? I don't need you to explain them, just write them in a way that is little easier to read. Thanks.

I would call it a composition, but if it originally had lyrics and is done absent of them...then that is an instrumental   :) .

I don’t think it has any lyrics

I think i can understand some of what Bluelight wrote, Judith. Let me try to translate:

“UMG is very interesting.  Last week they man handled some ® for Jerry Garcia from the GD. Looks like they did not have digital tools and went to copy write court with the actual song books in hand. Old school shit.

i believe “UMG” is Universal Music Group. It sounds like he is saying that last week, UMG aggressively acquired some trademarked material from the Grateful Dead on behalf of Jerry Garcia’s estate. He is implying that it is somehow related to material in the digital domain and as a way of proving their case, they went to “copy write” court with old song books. It’s all definitely very vague and leaves the reader thinking that either the author enjoys teasing his readers or doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Personally I chose the former because I believe in humanity. Others here are not so sure.

On to paragraph two!

I have no idea what’s going on in paragraph two. The author is crying about something that he used to cry about in the past but I can’t make out what. I’m not sure what “mammoth-UMI” is, my best guess is it’s a typo. Whatever it is, it has a bad rap and had to step on some toes. I’m pretty sure Warner Brothers is the parent company of Rhino Records, who I believe now owns the GD catalog. I think he is saying that they have taken some sort of step back and are allowing the estate of Jerry Garcia to take control of something.

Does that help? It didn’t really help me

Judit hope this helps.

There are 3 Major Music Publishers in the world; dominating 95% of the music publishing rights TAM (Total-Available-Market)

Sony / CBS

Warner Brothers

UMG

UMG is new to the party as a music broker publisher with no physical CDs being manufactured

They are a congruent of young cutting edge Digital Copy Right attorneys hailing from Harvard, UCLA. MIT and Berkley that have taken over the music industry by storm.

UMG got off on the bad foot by taking on the ® music battles of The Who & Zep.

Before I set sail, I profiled there top 6 executives and contacted one of them and a hunch they would love what I am doing & I was right. I am at higher level of that food chain as the cards fell- but it's nice to know I have not pissed off UMG in any way and they worked with me on the Who, Elton, and now Jerry Garcia's body of work- as a hired gun and many others & covered my back the whole time I was being prolific & keeping them employed for many years to come ~

Also "copy write" ?

Not a spelling Nazi, but considering the topic and

with all his expertise / dealings with Susan from youtube, one would think he'd get that one "write".

Go to best buy and purchase a new PC & HDTV and get real. Let me know when you have done that & I will read on..

If you have an Apple computer or browse on Bing, monitoring spelling in the World-Wide-web is perfect for you

The world is flying so fast by you-spell-checkers its not funny & you are all "missing the picture"

Roll your sleeves up & do some home work to know how silly "spelling is to me". Oh my God
