Soooo...... my dawg outran and tree'd a deer today

Forums:

Note: No animals were harmed in the course of this anecdote.

My dog outran a deer today.   Delia's Native American name is 'Running Dog', and this Treeing Walker Coon Hound is both a hunting dog and fast as the wind.

There is a place in town, with deep woods behind sports fields, where - when I am sure that it is deserted - I let her off leash. She burst out of the woods today yapping and close on the heals of a deer, and I watched her keep up with that deer in large 1/4 mile circles - my shouting was pointless - for a full 5 minutes. It was like watching Superman race against The Flash! Just an impressive physical performance by each animal.

At some point, Delia caught up with the deer(!), but slowed down and turned off just before the deer was stopped by the center field fence and fell stunned on it's side. Miss Delia barked and kept the deer where it was. True to her breed and name she had tree'd the deer and sat guarding if for 30 seconds before she was distracted and jumped into a nearby lake for a swim.

The deer, a bit wobbly at first, got up and jogged away ... joined by a 2nd deer who must have been in hiding.

Had it ended with any injury, I would have felt quite differently. As it is .... my dog caught a deer today! Only wish that I had not been so busy chasing her that I'd gotten video

In our part of the world, just a life and death battle of wits over hazelnuts...

I ran to get my camera, but merely caught the post detente stalemate...

I really thought this was going to be a Disco Stu thread.

Around here "treed" means caused to run up/climb a tree.

Got any pix of the deer in the tree?

Me too.

Your lucky Nod.  Out in Montana, a dog that is seen chasing deer or other wildlife can be shot on sight.  Seriously.

I had a dog out in Montana that would do that and freaked me out for that reason.  But one time, while on a hike up a mountain, he chased a herd of big horn sheep over a little rise.  I didn't see what happened, but then I heard him start yelping and he limped back all coughing and puking.

Disco Stu has 1000 more dog posts ..... but I doubt that the Husky ever caught a deer.

Surfdead ... yeah, writing that she'd "tree'd" the deer may not have been accurate, but the fact that she did not try to eat Bambi was a bit surprising.

Portland Ken .... luckily the deer was unarmed. It's NY, so it probably did not pass the background check.

Noodler ... you did better than me to get any picture.    Hazelnuts.... yum

There was one family at the soccer field (where she normally would not go.....) who were standing on a picnic table as Superman vs The Flash ran around the pavilion next to the fields. They did not get film either.   Damn

I wanted to find out how it tree'd the deer after outrunning it.

Assuming the dog got to the tree first (my interpretation of outrun) - did it give the deer a boost?

Bummer there's no video.

In some states where hunting deer is a big part of the economy, those with a hunting license are required by law to shoot a dog that is chasing a deer off leash. My former brother/sister in-laws lost their family pet that way. I also know a guy who had to pay a fine for NOT shooting a dog of leash that was chasing deer. Glad no animals were harmed in this scenario. As for the comment about a husky not catching a deer, pretty much every dog can run down a deer. While deer have explosive energy at first, they have little stamina and either have to stop to catch their breath or end up dying of a heart attack from over exertion long before most dogs run out of chase.

Before we invented bows and arrows, that's how most big game hunting was done - follow the animal until it runs oit of steam.

Cool story Nod, no unnecessary roughness, that's a great dog.  My bro had a dog named Nod back in the day. Actually his name was Nodual Winthrip Mumford, we called him Nod for short. He was also the best damn dog ever

I plead guilty to click bait

That hound kept up with the deer from step one. That seemed a bit freakesh to me. That's some greyhound shit

Adam & Ken .... so a hunter has a license to hunt deer and they shoot the dog over the deer????  I'm sure that its true, just a bit perplexing.

Canceling Delia's Montana vacation right now.

I am hopeful dogs and other animals will one day be recognized as fellow creatures that possess an inherent value and right to life; separate and apart from their relationship with humans; and not simply exist as "property" to be terminated when it is not convenient to the "owner".

The status quo is on par with slavery, if not worse.

Good job, Nod's dog. No harm.

How is Nod's dog lucky, Ken?

They were in town in a secluded woods behind a ballpark. I doubt a hunter was near.
