Spafford and Umphrey's-what say you?

Forums:

All, both these bands are playing in the NYC metro area this weekend. Have never seen Spafford, but I heard their live stream at Lock'n a few years ago and liked what I heard. Supposedly the drummer is gone now.

Saw Umphreys a few years back and they were a little harder edged than what I had expected.

Looking for some input on if I should catch one or both or any of these shows. Thanks folks!

I like Umphrey's more rock sound, but have to say I was underwhelmed by them last few times I saw them.

Saw Spafford last year for the first time and thought they were really good.  Better than Goose IMHO.

Thanks Ken! I am leaning towards Spafford as well.

Apparently these UM shows are 25th Anniversary or something....

Umphrey's seemed like a metal jam band to me when I saw them. Not my thing.

Agreed El Nino. I was suprised by their sound as well.

I don't get UM. IMHO one of the most overrated bands of all time. And they act like they are the greatest band ever.

Don't think I have caught Spafford yet.

I liked UM when I saw them.  Steve Berlin was there.  And Jojo!

I haven't clicked on a Spafford link so far.

The name sounds like private school.  Or the blonde, douche-y character in a comedy set at one.

Honestly, I always thought spafford was a nickname for another band.   Had no idea they were actually a band themselves.

I've been saying this for years!  Not necessarily the name of a private school or character, but simply how their name is somewhat of a "liability".

They've played some late night shows in Vegas and the Southwest after Furthur in the past and had liked them.  They can get a bit "repetitive" if you see them at length, but they seem to find some nice nuggets in the midst of it all ... and in a way that I find easier to roll with than bands that have more disjointed progressions (extreme would be Zappa) which Umphrees might have more of a foot in the door of that approach.

Back to the name:  I've always thought of Spafford as a Giant Bernese Mountain Dog that hangs around with its brother named "Spaulding".  In the end, it's the music that I care most about and not a name or band photo with everyone's arms crossed in some weird pose, but I still can't help to wonder about their trajectory if they had a better name?

first thing that popped in my mind was that Kid in the movie Caddy Shack, the judges grandson. But that was Spaulding
