State Of The Frog Sanctuary (Frog Content)...

Forums:

So three were living there,  but down to Two individuals now.  Haven't seen Frog #3 in a couple weeks :(

Many tadpoles,  however I'm still waiting for them to grow some legs.

Saw a good sized Toad today but s/he is a dry-land critter,  perhaps exchanging pleasantries with its Aqueous cousins ?

Did someone say "Frog Content"?

Yes I've been trying to paint their Fingernails,  but they are not all that cooperative

Fascinating.

Some lady I know wrote a Definitive research paper back in the 1970's and it's been a Wealth of reference information.

Sort of obscure,  but comprehensive within its scope.

I have one of the Original drafts.

This thread seems to have some. Welcome to the Frog Days of Summer. (Uh-huh. Uh-huh.)

The invasive ones on the Big Island are incredibly loud. Good thing I have experience sleeping at techno music campouts or those things would have kept me up all night.

>>>>The invasive ones on the Big Island are incredibly loud.

One of the loudest things I have heard in the wild was the Bartola Nature Preserve in Nicaragua at night.   Between the frogs, howler monkeys, and other critters, it was LOUD.

Frogs croaking all night long at White River campground outside Deer Creek was memorable.

Who needs sleep, anyway?

Fred Small – Hot Frogs On The Loose

By the light of the Tennessee moon
From the bilious bubbles of a black lagoon
They make a hound dog howl a swat team swoon
Hot frogs on the loose
They've multiplied since '53
Slurping nuclear debris
Amphibious fabulous fancy free
Hot frogs on the loose
chorus:
Hippity hoppity here they come
Radioactive lookin' for fun
If you kiss 'em look out for the tongue
Hot frogs on the loose
They got little skinny legs and big bug eyes
Fraternizing's not advised
They like you like they like flies
Hot frogs on the loose
They got a chicken nugget body and a whopper leap
In your bedroom while you sleep
They'll make your Geiger counter beep
Hot frogs on the loose
chorus
You can put the pedal to the metal till the rubber squeals
Squish 'em with your tires you got hot wheels
How you know how it feels to be a
Hot frog on the loose
Please do not keep them as pets
Sauteing them may bring regrets
Make a citizen's arrest of a
Hot frog on the loose
Frogs for peace frogs for defense
Don't be nervous don't be tense
We've got a sure-fire three-foot fence
To keep the hot frogs from gettin loose
chorus

Well,  it's been a while so I thought I would update.

Never saw any Tadpoles growing sets of legs or other metamorphosis.  I guess they do that deep underwater,  sheltered from predators beneath the Muck.

But over the last couple weeks,  I've seen more and more Juvenile Frogs there in Sanctuary,  and deduced / assumed they were born right there.  They started out the size of a quarter or half-dollar and keep getting larger,  so I guess their food supply is good.

Today I counted 13 young Frogs.   Go Frogs Go !!

Good job with the frogs!

>Yes I've been trying to paint their Fingernails,  but they are not all that cooperative<

Sru - I really admire your artwork. How do you get those frogs to hold still while you paint their bellies? Don't those little brushes tickle?

I love the sound of anurans in the evening.

We have a toadsplosion this year.  Last year too.  I think more this year.  Everywhere I walk in the yard they are hopping out of the way.  The good news is:

Toads eat ticks!!!!!!!

Die ticks Die.  Go Toads !!

Got stung by Ground Hornet yesterday evening while chopping Pokeberry.  S/he stung my ankle through a sock,  and I bravely ran away... lest its family joined in.

Those little stingers sure pack a punch.

I'm currently running a campaign against a ground nest of yellow jackets. I sneak up on them when they're sleeping and place a bug zapper over the nest entrance. As soon as one flies into it and the zapper begins to activate, they send the signal to attack getting their pheromones all over the bug zapper and identifying it as a threat  . They continue to attack the bug zapper until they are either all dead or  they Move on. MoveOn.organism

It is a fantastic chemical free method of pest removal

That sounds like a good technique,  but I suppose you need 120 volt AC power to run that Zapper.

I've been successful in Ground Hornet nest eradication using simple Gasoline and a match / flaming newspaper ball,  but that's no good in brushy areas.

You could start a Brush Fire like that.

Anyway,  reading up on Ground Hornets / Yellow Jackets a couple years ago,  I gather that they won't make their ground nest in the same spot each year.

So it's OK to run the mower in that place the next year {{{ CAREFUL !! }}}

And although they all look the same,  there are the ones that come out for your Soda and Chicken at the picnic,  and then the ones that nest in the ground,  and also those which build paper - mache hives on low-hanging branches.

The latter two groups are the ones which have viciously attacked me in the past (like even yesterday).

They chase you and can keep stinging,  even through clothing. You can jump in a Pool,  but they will keep stinging underwater.

Now that I think about it, I haven't really seen very many (if any) frogs up high in the mountains of SW Colorado.

Face -- make a cozy little Sanctuary for them,  and they will soon visit and Breed Frog Children.

I'm not sure where to begin?

Just let nature take its course.

"...I'm not sure where to begin?..."

Well,  Frog Sanctuary started out,  and still remains,  a "Kiddie Pool" which I was using to mix potting soil for Tomatoes,  Peppers and Bulbs for Flowers.

After the Spring planting season,  there was not much potting soil,  and the rains came,  then Leaves fell.

Soon,  Frogs moved in,  and I did not want to bother them.  They seemed Happy there.

So they have Free rent,  and I don't mess with them except to add Fresh Water every day.

I go out and say "Hello Frogs" in the morning,  and drink Coffee.  Sometimes I give them names,  like Freddy,  Frieda,  Francesca,  Frito and such.

They have other Bodies of water to move along nearby,  if they so desire.

Frog Sanctuary is a safe place for them to Breed and chill out,  with no structure or rules.

Hüsky has been trained to leave The Frogs in peace,  and not to mess with Them.

"It's their Back Yard too" is what I explained to H.I.M.

Just like to leap in here to give a shout out to my favorite slick-green zoner, Froggy PJ's.  Happy Jerry Day!!!

Nice thread.  I like frogs.

Always wanted a frog pond...........Was foraging for firewood near The Delaware Water Gap last year and disturbed a nest of ground wasps under a fallen log. Got zapped 7 times mostly the right upper back and armpit area OUCH! They followed me and I eventually took of and threw my shirt and ran inside. A whole load of ibuprofen and benadrylI kept things under control so I didn't have to go to the hospital. Still have scars from the attack and still itches bad sometimes.

Actual picture of Disco Stu and one of his earliest generations of frogs reminscing about their trials and tribulations together, as well as the difficulties of teacing a frog to pick a banjo...

First ya gotta find a frog with a missing half finger on the right hand.

Yes it seems I get stung about once per year,  and this particular one was just a single Ground Hornet that stung through a sock.  I wasn't running a machine,  just chopping up some invasive weeds with a Machéte.

That was Wednesday,  and the ankle was still a bit swollen and painful by Friday.  Squishing some herbal salve on the entry wound,  I pulled out a little Stinger end that had stuck in there. Yes I took a shower every day, but the Soap & water didn't remove the Stinger.  These little guys are serious.

Glad it was only one.  I smacked it with the flat side of the garden tool and it was squished.  Last few times it was several,  but they did not sting as deeply.  Hopefully,  the Murder Hornets don't move in to Jerseyland real soon.

Well I'm seeing 6-7 individuals lurking around Frog Sanctuary (murking?) lately.  Possibly some of them hopped along to other bodies of water,  or got eaten by predators.

A couple of the fastest - growing Frogs seem to be showing Special Feelings for one another.  Perhaps they will mate and hatch the late-Summer / early-Autumn spawn of Tadpoles.

I'm happy to have a Safe Place for them to frolic about,  eat Bugs and chill.  They are extremely low-maintenance pets which require no actual care or feeding,  but contribute to the Ecosystem.

Saw this on Reddit the other day under the title of "Got a complaint at work about 'very loud crickets' in the bathroom..."

They are Alive and Frogging,  but it's a Late Summer scene now.

My Work has been to keep Them Wet,  and the Rain helps a whole Bunch.

I see them hop about chasing Bugs,  and avoid stepping upon Them.

Not my pic.

I suspect that they are interbreeding and going for two Generations this season.

New batch of Tadpoles observed in FrogSanc.

Go Frogs Go !!  Eat those mosquitoes and Thrive.

I had a room in Benaulim, Goa, India in 2003 that was $2 a night, Big room with big bathroom with lot's of frogs that would come in through the drainage pipe of my shower into the bathroom. Was a great room very big but simple.

Me and My Friends use to Catch Huge BULLFROGS Back way When , Lizards and all sorts of Snakes too.

Space frog.

I used to live in a little log cabin on Bainbridge Island, next to a 300-acre public forest and bog!

In early spring it was always fun --and sometimes freaky --  to puff a bowl and hangout at the edge of the marsh at sunset,  listening to the mating season calls.... LOUD NOISES! ;)

There must've been a gazillion of them.

Population seems to linger around 14 Frogs when conditions are 'Just Right'.  One hopped in the shack the other day,  not sure if s/he made it back outside yet,  but I often leave a Door open,  so it probably found its way Home.

From what I can observe,  they leave FrogSanc at night and go eat Bugs,  or do Frog Night stuff.

It's fun to go out in the Morning and have a Coffee,  say "Hello Frogs" and count the population.

I've always wanted to attract toads to the garden and leave turned-over broken pots around for them... but have never seen one.

Why Frogs Matter

Frogs... I can kick it with yall.

Behold: Atelopus barbotini

fers4lu5wim51.jpg

Frogs seem to have left their Nice Cushy Frog Sanctuary and gone somewhere else.

I will miss them,  but happy to give them all a Nice spot to hang out this year.

Population seemed to be about Thirteen.

Stay Well, Amphibian pals.

Bon voyage and warmer water, Stu's fr o gs.

Did Stu's frogs become frog stew?

20110125-nastybits-primary_0.jpg

1.Rinse frogs under cold running water. Set aside.

2..In medium-sized soup pot or saute pan, bring dashi to steady simmer. Place washed frogs in pot and simmer for 10 minutes.

3. Add miso paste to pot and incorporate into broth by pressing miso paste against edge of soup pot. Simmer for 5 minutes longer, until frog flesh is cooked through but still very tender. Add wakame to pot and let soften in broth.

4. Serve immediately. Garnish with green onions.

Haha -- no I didn't cook them.  My belief is that they went to the in-ground swimming pool a few hundred yards / meters West.

This is the second Spring -> Summer -> Autumn cycle they've resided here,  raised Frog Children and ate Mosquitoes by the Bushel.

I trained Hüsky not to bother them -- "They are your Amphibian Pals, not prey."

Not to bring politics to this thread, but I do think that you all will appreciate the platform of the Boiling Frog Party:

Boiling Frog Party founder Gary Swing is just a small frog from a large pond. He thinks outside the bog as he leapfrogs into the dismal swamp of electoral politics.

WTF?!? — Why the Frogs?

Quoting Dr. Kerry Kriger, the Founder & Executive Director of SAVE THE FROGS!:

‘When we save the frogs, we’re protecting all our wildlife, all our ecosystems and all humans.’

Dr. Kriger explains the critical ecological role played by frogs and the threats they face here:
www.savethefrogs.com/why-frogs/

We are in the midst of the Sixth Mass Extinction of animal species, resulting from human impact on the ecosystem.
Seventy percent of the global wildlife population of vertebrate species has died off since the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970.

Vertebrate species are animals that have backbones. This includes mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. Invertebrate species are spineless creatures like jellyfish, sponges, tape worms, leeches, sea urchins, insects, and members of Congress.

The Earth’s human population has more than doubled since 1970, from 3.7 billion to 7.8 billion people. Per capita ecological footprints have dramatically overshot the sustainable limits of growth. The Living Planet Report ecological overshoot study estimates that the Earth could not sustain a population of more than 1.5 billion people if the average person on Earth had as much environmental impact as the average person in the United States does today.

About one third of frog species worldwide are now threatened with extinction as their habitats are destroyed. As ecological indicator species, frogs are especially sensitive to changes in both aquatic and terrestrial environments.

The Boiling Frog Party seeks to unite amphibious citizens of the world who prefer to have the thermostat turned down slightly on the global hot tub we all share, before we all croak.

The Boiling Frog Party is concerned about global warming, stove top warming, amphibian rights, preservation of endangered species, water pollution, conservation of wetlands and other natural habitats, human overpopulation, and the disturbing habit of Peruvian street vendors sticking live frogs in blenders.

We demand a global ban on restaurants serving frog legs. It’s time to end this holocaust of amphibian amputation!

The United States is a nation of sheep, ruled by wolves for the benefit of pigs. Congress is a den of vipers. All we are saying is… give frogs a chance!

Frog Level Monument ,  Louisiana, just down the road a bit.

I ate frogs' legs on the QE II.

The whole kinda like chicken thing was spot-on.

Specifically Weaver's frozen fried but less . . . industrial (cuz "processed" doesn't quite cover it).

So all Frogs have left the Sanctuary,  as far as I can tell.

It's possible that some are hibernating underneath the Icy leaves and wind-blown debris,  but there are no signs of any Frogs lately.

They had Fun Times all through Autumn and into Winter.  I wish them all the Best and hop to see their Return in Spring.
