From?

enormous... used to do the steep ravine hot

springs just south ..full moon, new moon

It's been pretty impressive but no where near as bad as last January.

There are cops everywhere, three different fire agencies, search and rescue trucks, jet skis, etc...

I was only slightly stressed this morning while making sure all of the posters and everything was high off the floor.

Another BIG high tide tomorrow morning and they are expecting more huge waves, but I think we'll be OK...

It's winter on the coast!!!

Saw some footage from a friend in Muir beach, looks pretty wild!

Glad all is well and everything is high off the floor, LCL.

It's exhilarating when the big waves hit; I love winter on the coast in California and Oregon.

yesterday afternoon just south of Mavericks (south of SF)

not only were the waves bigger than normal, they seemed much more violent and chaotic

why anyone would want to surf them is beyond me -- I can get enough adrenaline just driving on the Bay area highways

that place deserves its own thread -- one of the most exhilarating places in North America -- and a spot where one is sure to meet some unusual characters.

you are basically under the water line temporarily during the super low tide -- wedged under a boulder you are usually sitting on a starfish or two -- surrounded by a bunch of naked freaks vying for the hot seep -- and gradually the ocean crashes in --- it's crazy

Those waves are huge.

Wait til the melt up north really gets going. The next 2 to 3 generations are going to see some serious shit. Last time all the ice on Greenland melted away was around 400,000 years ago and the atmospheric CO2 was only at 320 PPM ( parts per million). We flew past that in the 80's and are now up to 420 PPM.  Apparently it stayed ice free for about 20000 years.

This atmospheric increase in carbon concentration has happened so fast that the ice sheets and the atmosphere are way out of equilibrium right now. When all that ice melts we are looking at a minimum of 20 feet of sea level rise. OMMFG.  Will that happen in 25 years, 100 years, or 500 years?  That is what scientists are now working feverishly to figure out. Wow. Climate change that usually happens over tens of thousands of years is now happening over a few hundred.

BTW the last time global CO2 was at 420 PPM was like 3 million years ago and the eastern US coastline was 60 miles further inland. Best show I've seen encapsulating all this science was on NOVA and is entitled 'Polar Extremes.'  A must watch imho.

Wonder when insurance companies will be pulling away from coverage of coastal dwellings bc simply raising coverage costs to obscene levels won't cover the losses.

Probably soon Joe.....last January's storm here literally caused millions in damage to houses, just in our little town.

Santa Cruz got wrecked pretty good during that one, as they did a few days ago. I imagine you've seen companies are already

not going to give people fire insurance in certain areas...they know it's going to burn and they will have to pay out big time.

----Thanks for your post Gunkman. I think most scientists know it's happening sooner rather than later, they just don't want to scare the

shit out of everyone....

Think of every big city that will literally be under water. I hope I'm not around to see it but at this point you never know.

Happy New Year!!!!
