buy blue chips, never sell them, 20 years later you'll be OK.

Easier:  buy Vanguard S&P 500 index. only sell when you need money.

^^No, man.  Pork bellies.  It's the holidays.  People be eatin' bacon.

(I may be paraphrasing)

My wife inherited some blue-chippers. With dividends and increase in price, she makes over 10% a year.

There is some big money to be made with medical marijuana stocks. The key is Finding  the real companies that are developing real medical treatments utilizing cannabaloids. GW Pharmaceutical is the model. Developing real medicine for seizures among other things. Do your own research, but I am heavily invested in Inmed Pharmaceutical--the chief science director worked at GW Pharmaceutical--and many of the execs have years of experience with real pharmaceutical companies. Imlff is the trading symbol.  The key as with most development stage pharmaceutical companies is getting enough funding to stay afloat until a partnership with a major pharmaceutical company can bring in enough cash for clinical trials. High risk-high reward.

for the more conservative investor, there are many low risk mutual funds and etf's (exchange traded funds) -- I am especially a fan of vanguard--their fees are some of the lowest in the industry. And I think that everyone should have some "index funds" in their portfolio--the stocks in the fund follow a set index-so a fund manager is not picking the stocks. You can track the entire stock market (vtsmx) or the largest 500 companies (s&p 500--spy), and many other indexes.

good luck to all. Investing requires patience and structured money management.

Sam, are you worried that the new administration will put the kibosh on this sector?

Am I worried about the new administration?  No more about the effect on the sector than our country in general. On the positive side-trump has said that it's a states issue--and being a businessman, I think he realizes the money to be made by taxing any and all forms of weed. Inmed is a Canadian company, and I think weed will be legalized in Canada very soon.  The growing body of evidence about both the painkilling and healing potential of cannabaloids is too overwhelming to be ignored. Warriors coach steve Kerr just publicized that he smoked weed for his back problems rather than take narcotics.  CNN medical director a few years back started an expose' on no medical evidence about the healing power of weed--and was so blown away by the evidence that he completely changed his mind. Obama just said in a rolling stone interview that weed is a public health issue similar to tobacco and alcohol. I could go on and on. Might not be a fight that trump wants to take on (hopefully).

I thought we were talking about trading......investing everyone is what everyone knows about...invest.... forget....look many years later

I see a spike in volatility leading up to and continuing into Trump's inauguration, as well with respect to the Fed's upcoming meeting to discuss raising rates. Might pull the trigger on some put options on the S&P 500.

Market due to correct..add a few commodities, short an index here and there....
