Sen. Orrin Hatch gave a feisty assessment of Obamacare supporters Thursday — an unexpected digression in the middle of an otherwise garden-variety speech on tax reform — calling them “the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met.”
Speaking at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, the Utah Republican heralded the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed in December, for eliminating the penalty for not having insurance under President Barack Obama’s signature health-care law.
“[Congress], finally, did away with the individual mandate tax that was established under that wonderful bill called Obamacare. Now, if you didn’t catch on, I was being very sarcastic,” Hatch said to laughs from the audience.
“That was the stupidest, dumbass bill that I’ve ever seen. Now some of you may have loved it. If you do, you are one of the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met.”
Hatch’s biting language Thursday wasn’t entirely out of character. He chided Democrats early last year for acting “like idiots.” And in 2014, he called his opponents “straight old dumbass liberals.” But his remarks on the Affordable Care Act were perhaps the first public slip-up since he asked for more civility in politics eight months ago (“The first step,” the senator wrote in June, “is to speak responsibly”).

Orrin has plagued our state for 40 years now. It's GREAT he's retiring but he'll be replaced with Mitt Romney.
Not bad enough I have to see that dumbass in the White House on the news, now I'm stuck with Mitt, too.

I thought Utah lost a chance to rid ourselves of him. We should've made a wager with Pittsburgh at the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. If Pitt lost, they'd have to take the asshole back.
I did have the pleasure of calling him a liar when we met with him while lobbying for Utah wilderness in 1995. I told him he was purposefully saying stuff he knew to be untrue and it wasn't adding anything to the debate in attempts to resolve the issues. He said "I feel chastised." I said "I'm not here to chastise you, sir. I'm asking you to quit doing it."
In 2005, he called anti-Bush protestors in Salt Lake "Nutcakes" and nutcake bumper stickers appeared. After yesterday, I was contemplating "Stupid, Dumbass Nutcake" stickers.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on Friday apologized for calling supporters of ObamaCare "the stupidest, dumba** people I've ever met."
"Yesterday, I made a poorly worded joke about Obamacare supporters - a joke that was not reflective of my actual feelings towards my friends on the other side," Hatch said in a statement.
"Throughout my term of service, I have always recognized the importance of civility, particularly in engaging with those of different political perspectives," he continued. "While I occasionally slip up, I believe that my legislative record reflects my commitment to bipartisanship and civility much more than my flippant, off-the-cuff comment."
