Supreme Court: OK to Trademark Offensive Names

Forums:

Guess the Washington Redskins no longer have to worry about their inability to trademark their name and logo, because the Supreme Court ruled today that restrictions on obtaining trademarks for racially offensive names and images violate the First Amendment's freedom of speech.   The lawsuit was brought by a Portland Asian-American rock band called "the Slants" who were denied the ability to trademark their name because the trademark office said it was offensive to Asian-Americans:

You have to love the fact the Redskins will now have to now admit that their logo (that has been used for over 50 years), is racially offensive for this ruling to work for them.

That's not necessary.
