We have already been through this. N95 masks work and are tested and rated. Any other mask is untested and viruses are microscopic and can easily escape through holes in cotton. If you really are sick then a surgical mask is probably more preventative than a regular cotton three ply. Washing your hands and keeping good hygiene likely to help a lot.

I regularly wear a KN95. When in "high density" places I double mask, with a surgical mask underneath. I don't feel any less free by doing so. I'm putting on a friggin' mask for a fw minutes at a pop, not cutting off my thumbs.

I don't want to relitigate the whole issue of whether masks work or not, but what I've noticed is that wearing a mask in public makes me more aware of myself and my surroundings. That greater self-awareness, in itself, seems to promote other safe practices like social distancing and contact with surfaces. Wearing a mask also signals to others that you care about your own health and theirs as well. It requires minimal effort, my breathing is not impeded, and there's really no downside that I'm aware of.

Wear a mask, unless you really don't give a fuck about your own life or the lives of others.
