Terrapin Family Band - A benefit for the Peninsula Arts Guild
Guild Theatre, Menlo Park, CA
Friday Aug 5, 8pm PT

Terrapin Family Band—Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Alex Koford, Jason Crosby - featuring Eric Krasno and Melvin Seals

"Led by Phil Lesh’s son Grahame Lesh, the star-studded ensemble seamlessly thread Grateful Dead classics and deep cuts into one-of-a-kind sonic tapestries. Using the Dead’s extensive catalog as a jumping-off point for interpretation, the Terrapin Family Band organically fuses each musician’s influences into a hard-charging sound rooted in the collective, telepathic, exploratory spirit of the Dead.

History runs deep between the Dead and the San Francisco Bay Area as the band played their first show at Magoo's Pizza Parlor in Menlo Park. Tonight, the two come together with the next-era sound of the Terrapin Family Band for their first show at the state-of-the-art Guild Theater and the venue’s first-ever livestream.

Join us at 8PM PT for an incredible evening of music and special surprises celebrating everything you love about the Dead. Watch the free livestream and donate to support the not-for-profit Peninsula Arts Guild on FANS!"

That could be good. Thanks, Noodler.

Interesting that they didn't list a bass player

>>>Interesting that they didn't list a bass player<<<

The Family Band has never played a show without Phil, but I figure that if he were playing they'd have announced it to assure a sell-out, so I'm expecting Ross or maybe Reid Mathis or someone like that to be on bass. Too bad.

I'm going, just because it's close and I'm hoping to see some folks from the TxR scene who I haven't seen in quite a while. Despite popular opinion, that band actually got pretty good over time, especially when they went with a different drummer and moved Alex to mostly singing.

It will be fun to see dead heads in the new venue, the staff will likely be challenged with the evil weed for the first time.

I'm looking forward to it, but I'm not expecting much, but if the old man on acid shows up to play, that will be an awesome bonus.

They had another guy playing bass when Phil wasn't there, but don't know his name...

I was told that Ross James is on bass.

When & where was that???

My friend who runs the Guild just told me it's still TBD on Phil showing up. Sounds like a tease to me, but maybe he shows for just the first set so he can get home at a decent hour.

I'm told it's a 2-set show, no opening act, with Melvin playing the whole 2nd set. It should be fun at least.

And BTW, none of those guys were busboys. They were dishwashers man, a much more important job.

Brian Markovitz on a FB post. I think he's the Deadheadland dude?

Brian Rashap, Phil's bass tech, understudy, and fill in as needed

Thanks for the intel, Lance

The Guild usually has opening act, so very helpful to know.

Hope to make it there tonight  hope the Phil tease comes to fruition

Graham is playing Alligator

There's a Travis Bean on Krasno's side of the stage too.

Yes, eagle eye

Friend of the Lithium?

Taking turns with Alligator

humping the alligator corpse?

That sounds like a necrophiliac version of the Yellow Dog story.

Band's back on stage.

Did Phil play?

No Phil. Ross and Grahame played bass. Ross mostly, and Grahame when Ross strapped on Alligator for a tune or two.

I watched the webcast, and thought the first set was pretty tight, and got really interesting when they merged FOTD and Nirvana's Lithium, and the second set was pretty hot at times. I haven't seen TFB in a while, and I was impressed. Not enough to travel, but for a free webcast, hell yeah.

Nice review Mike.  I too enjoyed the show, save Jason Crosby's Friend of the Devil, WTF???  To which song was that sung???

> they merged FOTD and Nirvana's Lithium

I thought Jason's mash-up was fucking fantastic. It seems he's been doing this for a number of years.

I thought it was pretty dope too, Dan, and the two songs dovetailed surprisingly well.

Well, that turned out to be much better than I was expecting. The band really got in a nice, rockin' groove and had the room jumpin'. Even the Dark Star worked, which at least for me doesn't always, as it takes interesting ideas and conversational, connected jamming to be engaging and not just slow, aimless noodling.

I've seen Krasno many times in these "Grateful Dead" type settings, with Phil and with the Family Band, and for me this was the best time I've heard him playing these songs. He really fit right in and ripped it up, Grahame continues to improve and is now a solid pro and Jason Crosby, is, well, fucking great. His violin playing on Tangled Up In Blue was brilliant.

And it's always great to see Melvin, and those JGB songs are just fun, party songs!

The most surprising thing was how good Ross James was on bass. The sound in the room was excellent, especially where I was, and his sound was deep, thick and groovy. Alex? Well, he taps along, keeps the time and sings very well.

As for the FOTD/Nirvana mashup, I've seen that before, and my take was the same last night; it's a fun little bit, but for me it would work better if they just played Lithium straight up. Once again though, I did find myself thinking about how the hell someone thinks of that. Smoke a fatty listening to Nirvana and suddenly think, "Hey! The words to Friend of the Devil fit perfectly in this! WOW MAAAAAN!!!"

It's harmless fun, but a bit shticky for me.

It was really a fun night, and it was fun to see the new room loosen up a bit and get groovy. This wasn't the greatest show in the world, but it was inspired, upbeat and overall it worked well.

I believe the stream link still works if anyone wants to check it out. I watched some and as usual thought, "Damn, it sounded WAY better in the room." But it's still pretty good, and there's a bit of zoner action all through it.

My view from last night...
