Discalimer: An old friend who was born in California and lived there for her first 35 years there (who now lives in New Zealand) sent this to me,

Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruit........

The truth can sometimes be a hard pill to swallow, sir, but life goes on.

Things Vermonters are good at:

Cows

Maple syrup

Being quaint

Communism

Ice cream

Phish

Most of those sound pretty good, other than the Lennonist fishie.

vermont is known for ice cream?

It comes from those cows.

Trolling is clearly something Coloradans are good at.

But cows? Cows?

Are you talking about Vermont in THIS century or last? Vermont has seen a large decline in dairy farms - nearly a 75% decline in the total number of dairy farms since 1975.

An easy to recognize sure sign of someone who is "making up shit" about Vermont is when they still mention cows with Vermont.

The rest - yes - we do all those other things very well. Well, except it's Democratic Socialism, Mark, not communism.

Alas, Phish is an embarrassment we have to live with, much like Grace Potter.

>>vermont is known for ice cream?

Have you ever heard of Ben & Jerry's?

yes, not good ice cream. famous tho.

I don't eat ice cream - but the rest of the world seems to think Ben & Jerry's is good. I guess you disagree.

i'd say any ice cream you can purchase at cvs ain't all that good.

maybe replace ice cream w/ cheese?

I ate a carnitas and egg sandwich at Hof's Hut yesterday.

Yes, Vermont's cheese is very good - Vermont's beer has been getting world class reviews as well.

Did you get a good sampling recently of other real SoCal food you were excited about, Slacker?

Regionalism is petty

So are most of the other isms.

Amen, Turtle.

I like Ben & Jerry's.

Im glad someone mentioned cheese.  There are many fine extra sharp cheddas up there.

I like cheese.

Wisconsin makes a superior cheddar to Vermont.

I like:

Blue Dream > Ben & Jerry's

P'eater is sad.

you forgot to add gorilla glue #4, ned.

"The World Championships has unequivocally handed the title to Wisconsin.  Wisconsin cheeses won the gold medal for both mild/medium and sharp/aged categories."

Cheese trolling is very cultured.

I like that cob smoked cheddar I had up there in that Pnu Albion area.

It's not trolling if it's true, Six.

Avocados are not on that list.

Fail.

If you do it, it's trolling.

>>>>Avocados are not on that list.

>>Fail.

80% of avocados come from Mexico.

Fail your wall.

MY wall?

Ok.

The collective wall on behalf of America - which you are a part of - therefore your wall as an American.

If the wall doesn't fail - we will not have enough avocados.

Trumpty Dumpty planned a great wall
Trumpty Dumpty had a great fall
Ripe avocados and all Putin's men
Couldn't put Trumpty together again

Taste is subjective.  Vermont does make a very good aged sharp white cheddar, among others. So does Wisconsin. Neither state do avocados well. That's for CA.

I like cheese.   And bread and puppets.

>>i'd say any ice cream you can purchase at cvs ain't all that good.

Ben and Jerrys is about as good as it gets. CVS has really good quality milk also, local.

Something tells me Trump has never eaten an avocado in his life,

so he wouldn't give a shit if they stopped exporting them.

I wonder what trump is thinking when he burns bridges wit Mexico. It's true, California grows awesome avocados, but a substantial amount of the nation's produce comes from Mexico. Granted we don't see much Mexican produce in California because we grow quite a bit of produce as well, but not enough to feed the entire nation without the assist from Mx.

I personally would feel diminished without access to plenty of avocados. A true staple of my diet.

Oregon has some bangin' cheese factories, but changes happen.

http://www.oregonlive.com/travel/index.ssf/2017/02/tillamook_cheese_fact...

I did attend the Ben & Jerry's factory tour a few years back.  No photography allowed (they don't want to let the Chinese steal the Secrets).

It was a quite modern facility with Happy workers. At that time, they had a new product ::: Quarts instead of Pints.

My guess is that most of the Vermonsters have never visited B/J factory just outside of Burlington.

what the f**k is vermont?

Vermont is a small, isolated state somewhere on the east coast.

Not really significant other than having a booming dairy industry and an annual commie festival.

goddamn hippies

3901-17391.jpg

Maple Grove Farms of Vermont produces some fine products, total coincidence i just had a nice salad with Maple Grove Farms raspberry vinaigrette.

Is there supposed to be something wrong with any of those California skills?

Not complete by any stretch but fairly accurate, except I never dive under my desk.

I settle down comfortably with a good book.

>>My guess is that most of the Vermonsters have never visited B/J factory just outside of Burlington.

The factory is in the town that Brian and I live in.

Do you guys ever hear cows screaming in the night?

When I visited B & J factory tour, I was a Big Sport and bought the tixx....

"OK, one Regular and one Senior Discount ticket."

"Which of you is the Senior Citizen ??"

"Certainly not Her."

"Fine, there you go."TB500_12_0.jpg

Oops, wrong photo.

It was supposed to be a different one.

Apologies. I'm still getting used  to the new photo interface.

>> Cheese trolling is very cultured.

BOO! HISS!

You would think Growing Weed would be on the CA list.

What do I know?  I'm under the desk with a burrito and bottle of wine.

OP thinks he's good at the internet

6, tell us more about your "friend" and why she had to move out of the State.

We're all humans maaaaaan!

That's very harsh, Hall. I will not answer any questions until you turn down the aggro.

I have no problem with the OP.

Here is a link to the transcript of a "Splendid Table" episode discussing some very highly prized buttermilk and butter from a small dairy farm in Orwell, Vermont

https://www.splendidtable.org/story/how-to-make-buttermilk-good-enough-t...

not agro at all... I just assumed we were playing the troll game here.

how's this:

6, please tell us more about your friend (lover?) and what drew her away from California, why she chose NZ, and how difficult was it for her to immigrate there.

I'm actually genuinely curious... I've known a few crunchy types through the years who spoke of wanting to leave California for any number of reasons (too custie, too expensive).  I've also heard people here and elsewhere speak of NZ as the new promised land, but from my understanding, it's not an easy place to immigrate to (most of the hippie types I knew or know of ended up going to northern Norcal or Oregon).

Back in the 90's a client from NZ told me it was very tough for foreigners to get something of a permanent status, but that one way was by relocating a tech company there (did your friend(lover?) have a tech company?).

I looked into it recently and to retire in NZ, one must "invest" over $500,000.00 (USD) in the first 2 years, then $60,000 per year after that.  And while the initial investment of say a home isn't so bad, the continuing outlay seems kind of insane if you're not pretty damn well off.

Littering and Car Accidents .....

First of all - you know I was just having fun - but she did not "have" to leave California - she chose to.

Not a lover - just a friend. Her name is Monica and she grew up in Arcata. She is partially of Mexican descent and her maternal grandmother taught her a shitload about Mexican cooking. She makes the best tamales I have ever tasted - including chocolate tamales at holiday times. She met a friend of mine from Vermont and after they married she moved here to Vermont to live with him during the 1990's. She opened a business in Vermont called Tamale Girl - and that is how I became enamored with her tamales. My buddy - her husband Jason - was a chef here in Vermont (my niece even apprenticed with him while she went to New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier at a restaurant in Stowe where he was the EXEC. Chef) - and Monica also did some free lance newspaper reporting  here as she had a degree in Journalism. During the first couple of years of W - they both became very dismayed with the USA and inquired and were both given visas. Moving there in 2003, they have lived there for about 14 years now and I don't think they had to invest anything - although he became a brewer there and after first working at 8-Wired, now works at McLeod's - and she raises sheep and still makes tamales. Beautiful people. Love them. Sweet and genuine. Not deadheads. They have come back to visit Vermont a couple times and she has gone to see her family in Arcata every few years too. Really miss them - but when my kids are done with college - my wife and I plan to take an extended visit to NZ and stay with them.

She is still a Cali girl at heart - she will tell you - and that's why she passed me that meme with a "Totally, fer sure!"

Boring. Could you two go back to "trolling" each other?

Sixxy, "Mexican" food in Arcata is god awful. I had better Mexican food in Cape Cod. That said I'm sure your friend's tamales are great or she'd be selling them in Arcata.

I bet that Mexican food in Arcata is better than Mexican food in Vermont.

Hall,

My best friends' eldest son emigrated to NZ. He got a work visa and then got a job doing work for a winery. Met the winery owners' daughter and being a handsome fellow, she took a shine to him. They aren't married, yet, but I think her fam is helping out with the paperwork. It is incredibly difficult for most Americans to move there on a long term/permanent basis unless you possess a skill they particularly need. That list of skills is pretty small.

I bet Mexican food in Vermont is better than Mexican food in New Zealand.

Ben and Jerrys still to my knowledge is a socially conscious corporation. Supporting GMO labeling. Anti hormone. Actively  Anti -Citizens united.  As far as quality I know of no other company with as many flavors that's widely distributed as good as B&J. The only real bad thing is the amount of fat in a pint.

Californians do large scale quality production well. Sierra Nevada beer. Organic soil grown.

any good mexican spots in vermont?

Vermonters don't really understand Mexican food.

They're a simple people who prefer the quiet comfort of a nice slice of white bread and a hearty bowl of soup.

any good mexican spots in vermont?

There was a terrible one by Smuggler's Notch.

Not sure if that's helpful.

We had crab nachos and shrimp tacos in Javier's at Crystal Cove. Stay thirsty, mis amigos.

image_469.jpg

Is Crystal Cove what used to be called Scottsman's Cove? Turts?

Ha El Zorro or Dorado, that spot is gone. It was replaced by an equally bad Mexican restaurant that also failed. There use to be a place in Johnson that was authentic but they had a house fire and I believe the family was deported. I like Mad Taco but I'm not a good judge of quality Mexican.

I think Scotchman's Cove is right behind me.

Jerseyland has mostly awful  Mexican food.  Plenty Wonderful Italian spots though.

Freehold, pronounced "Frijole" actually has some decent Taquerias.

That was our favorite spot to go tripping in HS :D

>>There use to be a place in Johnson that was authentic but they had a house fire and I believe the family was deported

She was not deported and she just opened a restaurant in Morrisville!

She is the only thing close to authentic in the entire state of Vermont (where our motto is "Soup and White Bread Über Alles!").

I like Mad Taco too - but only the Waitsfield location.

Can you post your favorite soup recipe, Six?

Hmm...my favorite soup? I guess that would be WHITE bean soup.

I don't cook with recipes, Mark. I cook with instinct.

white bean w/ escarole. damn tasty.

do they have italian food in vermont?

Yes. Trattoria Delia in Burlington is probably the best.

And I am more of a Tuscan White Bean fan.

What are your thoughts on venison stew?

Like any food - it's good in the right hands. I usually make venison chili when I have some. I don't hunt anymore - have not since I was a kid - but I do still go to Deer Camp (aka Beer Camp) each year for a couple days in November to play cards, drink beer and have fun with old friends.

>>>She was not deported and she just opened a restaurant in Morrisville!

She is the only thing close to authentic in the entire state of Vermont (where our motto is "Soup and White Bread Über Alles!").

Nice yeah Hot Tamales? I thought somebody in the family got deported but I could be wrong. I see there is also El Toro in morrisville now.

yeah the Waitsfield Mad Taco location is the only one I've eaten at. Worth a visit,  especially if you like beer. The original Flatbread in Waitsfield too.

any vermonters have info on where to purchase a food cart in vermont?

OP thinks he's good at cooking too.

Free cone day at Ben & Jerry's today.

We might experience some of the legendary Los Angeles Traffic on the way to Dodger Stadium tonight.

Chicken breast, whole butternut squash, one sweet potato, onion, celery, spring onions, fresh parsley, a little this, a little that..... never a recipe....

I believe haggen daz has a higher fat content than Ben and Jerrys, not sure how thats even possible.

I imagine Sixy's rustic log home is adorned with doilies and knickknacks.

Dylan is playing the Shelburne museum in June.

Back when I was a refugee I wiped my ass with one of Sixer's prized doilies. He wasn't happy!

thanks for sharing,  6, I'm married to a half Mexican who makes the best mole you've ever had, so I can appreciate your friend's story (and would love to try a chocolate tamale!).

And if you are under 56, you don't have to "invest"... anyone over 56 are considered retirees, so they have to basically bring the dough with them vs adding to the economy by working.

>>>It is incredibly difficult for most Americans to move there on a long term/permanent basis unless you possess a skill they particularly need. That list of skills is pretty small.

yep.

A co-worker just got back from vacationing there and he wants to buy a retirement property... and while he's doing OK by Bay Area standards, the prospect of having to bring in 60K per year off of just SS, 401k and investment returns is sill a pretty daunting prospect.

On a side note, he was particularly impressed by the absence scumbag types as well as how clean everything was there (read: white)... not surprisingly he is also a Trump supporter.

Lol. One of the biggest scumbags I ever knew was a guy from NZ. Used to stay up for days shooting coke till he started hallucinating. Of course, he fished out of Dutch Harbor so....

>>>Back when I was a refugee I wiped my ass with one of Sixer's prized doilies

Fantastic. You're doing the Lord's work, Brian K.

lol like I said, he's a trump supporter, so I'm sure he saw what he wanted to see...

Poor Sixy.

Couldn't captain this turd freighter to the hundo port. sad

How premature can you get? It's a wonder you fathered a child. Have patience.

Anything over 12 posts is respectable on this Board. A low drama thread with over 3 posts is almost unheard of. This may be a candy bar that just looks like a turd.

lol !

As we dock at the Hundo Port, there will be turd sandwiches available on the Lido deck.

Bonus Jerry at Disneyland photo for those who make it this far in the thread.

Save me a turd Sammy, would you? I'm finishing a game of shuffleboard right now.

One turd sandwich for my man!

Well. Looks like all Six needed was a little encouragement.

Don't stop believing, folks.
