Things to do in Palo Alto

Forums:

Greetings Zoners- I am going to Palo Alto for the first time in 40 years and am curious other than than Stanford what would be some good things to see, anything historical as it pertains to the early days of the GD,  or do,

Any fine dining recommendations?

Very excited to take mty son to The show on Sunday w The Wolf Bros, ect, et al. he is so on the bus now for a 19 year old.

My first time at The Frost even my son beat me there for JRAD.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I looked and looked for things to do when we were there a few weeks ago and didn't find much.  Ended up spending much of the time just walking in downtown and eating food.   Weather was awesome and hopefully you will be graced too.

Good luck and interested in what other people come up with as things to do.

the south bay is well known all over the bay area as one of the best places to go for japanese food. if you like sushi, you should go to sushi sams. sushi ran is another good one. avoid at all costs the large, american style futomaki rolls that are the primary form of sushi sold in most of the US, and seek out omakase/tasting menus focused on VERY simple nigiri.

chez TJ is another good recommendation. 1 michelin star, very old school french fine dining. i love to support and reccomend them due to their willingness to be one of the only establishments willing to stand up to CA's draconian and anti-science foie gras ban back in 2012, pioneering the "free foie with purchase" loophole. that was many years ago and if i had to guess, its no longer on the menu, but its very good food regardless and IMO is worth supporting.

Pigpen's final resting place is only a couple of miles from the Frost:

El Camino park for GD history....

i hear there's been some folk singing happening on Wednesdays at magoo's pizza

639 Santa Cruz ave

menlo park

If you go to see Pigpen's grave site, the people at the desk at Alta Mesa will give you a map. It was the same as the one for Greg's dad, across the lane from Pigpen's.

California Ave is Palo Alto's better 'downtown' - good nightlife and Sunday farmers market is vibrant.

check out the free Cantor Museum on campus, go up Hoover tower (last elevator up is at 3:30 pm). so many beautiful hikes nearby. Thornwood is closest.

Bucks in Woodside is fun as is the Alpine Inn for outdoor creek side dining.

you can rent bikes (or ebike) on campus and tour around. Head to the Baylands and shoot over to Shoreline.

I think there's a football game on Saturday - plan accordingly.

Check out The Guild schedule for music.

There are some new "fine dining" restaurants at Springline development. Not my thing, but the expensive  Sushi place is getting some good press. I've been meaning to check out Proper Foods which also just opened at the new development. There's a brewery there too.

If you want good affordable grub on campus, there's the Coho or Tree House Cafe (excellent pizza). the Escondido Village Pub is nice with outdoor fire pits and ping pong  (open 5-midnight). Or a variety of good eats at Town and Country across the street from Campus.

Don't pay for Campus parking. It's free on weekends, unless you're a sucker and pay for the official concert parking.

Thanks you Freaks! Very much appreciates! Fine Dining can be expensed :-) .

Hoping to find good Italian we don't like Sushi although I was a bus boy in a Sushi restaurant in 1979/80 so I had a front row set to watch the Sushi explosion after Shogun aired on TV.

Definitely will check out Pigpen's final resting place and place a stone on it as is the tradition for me anyway.

Sounding like Stanford Saturday then dinner then Killers Of A Flower Moon on Saturday and on Sunday Pigs final resting place w my son then the show.

I am really looking forward to this show somehow I got Front row center two off the aisle through Seated I am still wondering how that happened.

Have a Grateful weekend all.

This historic recently restored movie theater is showing 'the Mummy' Sat nite at 6:05 and 8:45. Live organ music too.

Shoreline lake is gorgeous today with boat rentals and lovely lake side cafe.
