Things That Make You Go WTF

Dark Web ??  WTF ??

A resident MD at Yale New Haven Hospital, one of the best in the world,  flushed all those years of hard work at med school to become an oxy dealer, getting the shit from the Dark Web. I'm at a fucking loss for words, if you can believe that.

Federal authorities: Former Yale New Haven doctor turned to the ‘dark web’ to obtain, deal pain pills

NEW HAVEN — A former Yale New Haven Hospital emergency room doctor has been charged in connection with an ongoing federal drug distribution investigation after authorities say she admitted to receiving packages of pain pills from the “dark web,” an underground network for illicit substances, according to federal court documents obtained Thursday.

Dr. Jennifer Farrell, a former second-year resident at the hospital, was charged with distribution of narcotics outside of the scope of professional practice and not for legitimate medical purposes.

Farrell was arrested on Thursday and was held without bond after a prosecutor claimed she was a possible flight risk, had a history of substance abuse and that she faced up to 10 years or more in prison if convicted.

Farrell came to the attention of an FBI agent in March who was tasked with investigating health care fraud. In 2017, Farrell became a resident doctor at Yale New Haven Hospital and was assigned a specific number for prescribing medication, including pain pills, according to the FBI. That specific number was registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration, which monitors prescriptions for possible abuse.

The agent discovered that in March a woman received a text message telling her that a prescription at a Walgreens in New Haven was ready. But the woman hadn’t seen a doctor recently and wasn’t expecting a prescription, she told authorities.

Days later, she received another text message telling her another prescription was ready. The woman then spoke with a pharmacist who told her that a prescription for Oxycodone was filled under her name to treat pain from a “motorcycle crash.”

But the woman hadn’t been riding a motorcycle and investigators later learned that Farrell had filled the prescription, but hadn’t examined the woman, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in New Haven.

Another woman picked up the fraudulently obtained prescription instead, using an out-of-state license for identification. That second woman later told federal authorities that she paid Farrell to write “e-prescriptions,” which are sent to pharmacies online, bypassing an older method of faxing them.

Farrell wrote the prescription for the Oxycodone and the woman would also give some of the pills to Farrell after she picked them up, the woman told authorities.

The woman — whose name was used illegally in the scheme — told authorities the woman who picked up the prescription was a friend of hers. Days after she was notified about the fake scripts, Farrell called her, asking her to fabricate a story about the pills, according to the FBI.

As part of that story, Farrell wanted to falsely claim she had lost her hospital-issued cellphone, which she used to sign and issue legal “e-prescriptions” and they could pin fraudulent scripts on an “unknown third party,” according to the complaint.

Investigators learned that prescriptions have to be approved by a supervising doctor at the hospital, but Farrell had exploited a “loophole” within the hospital’s software that allowed her to write multiple “fraudulent oxycodone prescriptions” using multiple patient names, according to federal court documents.

Parallel to the investigation of Farrell, federal authorities were also investigating a suspected drug distribution network that used the dark web to push product. Those “dark webs” are underground networks of computer users who trade online currency for everything from illegal drugs and guns, to hacked credit card information.

As part of that probe, investigators intercepted two packages addressed to Farrell that held more than 100 Oxycodone pills in one, and 10 fentanyl pills in the other. They suspected the pills were sent to Farrell using the illicit network, according to federal documents.

Farrell admitted to authorities she ordered at least a dozen packages from the dark web, including the pills intercepted by federal agents, according to the complaint.

Farrell voluntarily surrendered her license to dispense medication in late June. She is no longer employed by Yale, according to federal authorities, but her name is still listed on Yale’s website as a hospital resident.

"We are aware that a former Yale New Haven Hospital resident was recently arrested and we are fully cooperating with the authorities,” a hospital spokesman stated in an email Friday. “As soon as we became aware of the allegations, the resident was placed on administrative leave.”

The investigation is ongoing, according to federal authorities.

Boola Boola !

I’m confused to the “WTF” part.

Is it the dark web? It’s been in the news for the last few years, one of the founders of its biggest site, “Silk Road” was arrested by the FBI a while ago and will spend the rest of his days in prison for running a site that distributed drugs, phony passports and where you could also hire a hitman, amongst other things,

is the “WTF” part about a doctor, aka a human being, becoming addicted to drugs, opioids in this case, and ruining their life? I mean as deadheads, drug abuse and the perils of it should be something that we are familiar with.

The story above doesn’t seem that remarkable to me at all. It’s definitely unfortunate, but the opioid abuse problem in our country is an epidemic. The companies and doctors who manufactured and over-prescribed these medications are starting to be held responsible for the tens of thousands of lives that they have ended and ruined due to their actions.

If this article came out in 2009 I might have been like WTF.

Critical.

Bucky,  of course the doc tossing it all away. It makes no mention of her being an addict or using at all. She was an emergency room nurse, I think someone would have noticed. Appears she did it for a thrill. Yeah also the Dark Web. I had no idea how dark it was. I've never heard it mentioned here and don't know much about it.  I thought it was like a Craigs List for those needing discretion. How can such a place exist that a nurse can load up on bad drugs and law enforcement can barely touch it ? That amazes me.

>>>>> makes no mention of her being an addict or using at all

Yes it does.

>>>>>had a history of substance abuse

>>>>>.the woman would also give some of the pills to Farrell

((((Dark Web))))

>>had a history of substance abuse >>

- a prosecutor claimed

And as we all know prosecutors are always right

If she did half of what she received, she'd be dead.  I believe she did it for the thrill of the $$.

Fuck any political conspiracy theories any wingnut comes up with, can someone tell me who's the big brother behind the Dark Web ? The $$$ usually leads to the crusty white man - so who the fuck is behind this place, where you can get anything you want, from an 8 year girl to bags of fentanyl ? Who's the crusty white guy ?

The military came up with the dark web in the 1990’s.

Regular people started using it in 2004.

People who are addicts sometimes also sell drugs because they are expensive.

THE MORE YOU KNOW!

I live in Utah. I say "WTF?" quite often.

The latest? Have you seen Utah Rep. Chris Stewart at the impeachment hearings?
