Third Mind at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass

Forums:

wish i could make it out.

Cool, just booked my flight 3 days ago.  Looking forward to being in Golden Gate Park again.

And this is (one reason) why I dislike festivals.

It's likely that this will be their one Bay Area stop, and what are the chances of this group touring extensively enough to come back around?

A few groups that play HSBG also play a regular show somewhere in the area, but smaller bands like Third Mind have tight touring schedules and usually only play one night in a region.

Hopefully they'll also play Sacramento, where a two-hour drive is preferable to the epic hassles of 200,000 people crammed into an area that's comfortable for 75,000, or maybe I'll get really lucky and they'll play Santa Cruz, where Dave has a long-running association with the great little dive Moe's Alley.

Friggin' festivals.

Hardly Strictly used to be cool.   No fences, easy to move around, fewer big acts.   Now I'm just an old curmudgeon

I'm with you Zang. And Tom(except for the Santa Cruz part). I have seen him at Moes at least twice but that is too far for me.

Apparently this will be the groups first live performance...

"The Third Mind feel honored and ready — if more than a little nervous — for the challenge of playing their first live show in front of several thousand people at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. The band believes that the always open-minded, eclectic Hardly Strictly audience will become a member of the ensemble that will inspire and guide the band's spontaneous performance."

It should be good, just WAY too much hassle for these old bones. I'll serve the greater good by staying away and taking up one less space. I'm sure it will make a difference.

>>>easy to move around, fewer big acts<<<

You must have been going when the event was called Strictly Bluegrass, because after they began booking the broader variety of acts and added "Hardly" to the name it went big fast, and especially once it became widely known as !!FREE!! the hordes quickly descended.

It's amazing how 'free' can assuage so many otherwise unacceptable situations.

Have fun kids!

I've got a bum knee and other assorted aches and pains,  but I'm still game for this.  Just plant a chair at whatever stage appeals to you most, and wander off for food and to check in at the other stages.  Very fitting that the first 3rd Mind show will be a free show in Golden Gate Park.   It's a perfect match for their sound.  The Dew will be epic!

Yeah Dave, I'm not trying to disparage the event or those who go, it's a great affair and I've had good times and seen some good sets at HSBG over the years.

It's all just a little too hectic for me personally now, especially since I don't get the Friends & Family pass anymore, where there is easy access to reserved space close to every stage with seats, drinks and bathrooms. Now I have to co-mingle with the common rabble.

The horror.

There are definitely some things I miss by being retired.

I had tix to catch them in Davis on their first scheduled tour. Thanks covid.

We used to rule HSBF. We rented a house across the street from the entrance and snuck over during the night and put down tarps at the Banjo and any other stage that had a good lineup the next day. Now, with the changes both there and with me, it's just not worth the hassle anymore.

Dave Alvin  (a few minutes ago on fb)

If all continues to go good health wise with me, here's what's coming up (fingers crossed):

I'm very excited to inform you that The Third Mind will make our debut live performance on September 30, 2023 at The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco's beautiful and legendary Golden Gate Park. We'll be celebrating the upcoming October release of our second album so we're looking forward to playing a lot of those tunes. As many of you know, The Third Mind is a musical conglomeration dedicated to, among other things, open ended, musical spontaneity so...this first gig should be fun, interesting and a little sonically dangerous.

Then I head to Austin to finish the new album with my dear friend, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and my tight and all round excellent band, The Guilty Ones. This album is shaping up to be a bit like our first one together (mixing folk, blues, R+B, country with rock and roll) but with more original songs, lots of very evocative playing by the band and some of the most soulful vocals Jimmie Dale has ever recorded. It should be out in the spring of next year and then we'll be hitting the highway to play it live for you.

In November I'll be doing a short run of shows in Northern and Central California with The Guilty Ones and myself (including what should be a memorable show with my old comrades Los Lobos at the fabled Fillmore in San Francisco) I'm looking forward to playing some of my songs that I haven't had a chance to play lately so if you have any requests, please feel free to let me know.

Then hopefully next year, The Third Mind will be playing more live shows as well some nationwide touring with The Guilty Ones and Jimmie Dale so...Let's see what the doctors say. Until then, I'll see you down the road.

lobos and alvin at the fillmore should be a no-brainer for you kids.

Los Lobos/Guilty Ones  11-18 @ The Fillmore...

Stages & times are set for the festival.

Third Mind will be on the Swan Stage (Lindley Meadow) on Saturday from 3:50 - 4:50, and apparently Mark Karan will be joining them.

Looking at the daily grids, it's surprising to me how few acts interest me.

But I take that as my fading more than the festival's bookings.

And Dawes on Friday, perhaps a guest bass player sit-in???

Have fun kids!

https://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/schedule/

Get off my lawn.

Thanks for posting the link to the grids.  Saturday and Sunday look pretty tasty.  Choosing between Steve Earle, Irma Thomas, and The Church for Saturday's closing slot is a tough call.  Not much besides Peter Rowan is grabbing me for Friday.  Might go see the Giants-Dodgers game instead if the Giants are still alive by then.

The Giants have been on life support for the past six weeks, now they're dead in the water. But a ballgame would still be fun.

And I just realized that I'll in Santa Rosa that Friday morning attending an interment of a family member who recently passed. On my way home I'll be driving directly through GGP, so maybe I'll look around a bit and get lucky with a parking space and catch Peter Rowan at 4:00.

My cousin was a born & bred San Franciscan who lived & worked in the city her entire life, and she really loved Golden Gate Park. She was a nun, and she once told me that her favorite church in San Francisco was Golden Gate Park.

Stopping there for a Peter Rowan set would be a nice tribute and a fitting way to finish what will be a somber day.

Sounds like I may be going to the show after all.

sounds like you have to now lance.

that would be proper.

sorry for your loss.

Sorry about the loss in your family, Tom.

HSBG line-up looks underwhelming to me this year, but it's still a wonderful time to be out in the park if the crowds are not too big, and there are always musical surprises.

As for MLB, it just pains me how much the people running it have fucked over our great national pass time. Stupid rules to speed up a game that is not necessarily intended to run fast. All so they can manage ad revenues on television streams. Fucking billionaires ruining most everything that is cool. Most of all, fuck you, John Fisher, Sell The Team!

HSBG line-up looks underwhelming to me this year,

same. i think its the lack off jazz/jam/experimental stuff peppered thru the schedule. when i was going to this festival regularly, i always remember a few legendary non-bluegrass bands, some jazz or jazz influenced stuff, occasional jam acts(most of which were not that great but we had a few decent ones like JRAD), and more experimental music. it was AWESOME to head to the park to catch stuff like thurstoon moore, marc ribot or buckethead, and then spend most of the rest of the day catching all kinds of random bluegrass.

with that aspect of the festival seemingly missing, trudging thru those crowds seems a lot less appealing.

Good Day 1 at the fest today.  It was foggy and cool, but a pleasant, mellow scene.  Things didn't start until 1 today, and the Rooster Stage was not used.  Tomorrow and Sunday will start at 11 a.m., will have all the stages running, and will likely be more crowded.

I was mostly there to see Peter Rowan's set, but caught bits of Vetiver, Buffalo Nichols, Shakey Graves and most of Carrie Rodriguez' set.

Rowan played:

Lonesome L.A. Cowboy, Panama Red>Freight Train>Panama Ree, I'm Blue I'm Lonesome, Walls If Time, Land Of The Navajo, Midnight Moonlight and one or two others I can't recall.

it was nice being back in the park.  It's a groovy scene.  Looking forward to a big day tomorrow and the Third Mind's debut live performance.

Yeah, not enough there to make me want to fly out. Especially when there's a stream for lots of it. But I've ALWAYS enjoyed the vibe. And I have a buddy I love to visit who lives just a block away on 31st Ave. LOVE the fest. AND the archives! Seeing John Prine, Brandi Carlile in a stellar performance with an adoring crowd, Randy Newman. DSO, Dolly, Kris Kristofferson, Todd Snider, the Stringdusters, the Hillbenders doing "Tommy," Weir with the Waybacks, the Milk Carton Kids, so many GREAT memories. Don't know who's booking this thing or if budget has become a major concern, but I hope it gets better.

Looks a little chilly. When the weather's fine, there's nothing like it at GGP with a bunch of fellow music fans. Sierra Hull is a don't miss for me this year. Y'ALL ENJOY!!!!!

A lovely Friday in the park. Not at all crowded. Cool and cloudy, but not at all uncomfortable. Peter Rowan rocked it. The long stretched out take on "Land of the Navajo" was especially tasty. The new Horseshoe Hill stage is some nice real estate.

Glad to encounter some Zoners in the crowd. Hopefully more of you today and tomorrow.

It is definitely a grand San Francisco fall tradition at this point, and nothing to complain about. It is given to us for free, and very little is these days.

If you can't make it out to the park watch the streams! And the blessed archives the rest of the year.

Hermanos Gutierrez on the swan stage sounding MINT right here thru the McIntosh

well i guess i can listen to the video post show..gonna ride my bike down about 20 mins to listen to charley crockett's set outside the gate on the beach.

Hope he plays blackjack county chains for you turtle

he's got 40 mins bss, so we shall see. thnx

I can't get the stream. The watch on your browser link is not active. Bummed. Was hoping to catch Third Mind at least.

The sun is out now at Day 2 at the Fest.  Caught Dry Branch Fire Squad, Laurie Lewis, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore's sets at the Banji Stage with a couple of sneak peeks at Deadramones and Syd Straw at the Arrow Stage between those sets.  Dry Branch was great, always fun seeing Ron Thomasson.  Jimmie Dale had Bill Kirchen sitting in for the whole set, and had guest sit ins from Dave Alvin, Kelly Willis, and M. Ward.  I just moved into position just back left of the soundboard in Lindley Meadows at the Swan Stage to catch the Third Mind and The Church's sets.  About to kick off in a couple of minutes.

IMG_3190.jpeg

Good to see Mark Karan in the Third Mind set.

Sure is! wow!

what a treat indeed

Mark, Bss' link is working for me. Third Mind's on now.

Rickie Lee Jones on Banjo Stage also!

thought I heard

a baby cry today

Wind 15++ ...rain squall. Got soaked on bike ride. Charley was of course great. Standard set. No wonder these dumb fests are so expensive ....just super overkill on security and cops. Just a stupid waste. Security vaping. Just retahded.

Now the link works. I'll have to catch Dave on the replay.

Dug the Third Mind set.  Michael Jerome was killing it.  They ended it with the Dew and an intense jam.  They still had about ten minutes to their slot, but I guess they wanted to end it on a high note.  Wouldn't have minded seeing them try their cover of Fred Neil's The Dolphins.  Nice seeing Dave and Mark trading licks.  A couple of cancer survivors looking and sounding good.

Decided to skip out on waiting an hour for The Church's set, and moved over to the Rooster Stage where I caught the end of Buddy Miller's all day cavalcade of stars.  He brought Bettye Lavette out for a duet, then the McCrary Sisters for the finale.  They're setting up for Irma Thomas' closing set now, which I'm hanging around for in lieu of Steve Earle or The Church.  Irma is getting up there in age, so I want to see her sing Time Is On My Side, Ruler Of My Heart, and It's Raining In My Heart at least one more time.

The Third Mind closed with "East/West," not "Dew."

What ateix said, although I'd add that it was kind of an abbreviated version of it. Like 5 or 6 minutes' worth maybe.

Third Mind>Bombino>Irma Thomas to finish day2 pretty diverse...

I said they ended on "an intense jam", which you pointed out was East/West.  Then again, I was there, and you were watching a stream.  So there's that.

The closing set from Irma was a stone cold groove.  What a day.  From Bluegrass to Texas Troubadour to Psychedelic Jam Rock to New Orleans R&B.  That's some sweet potpourri.

God Bless You, Warren Heileman!

>> They still had about ten minutes to their slot

Did being in the park provide a ten minute leap forward in time? If so it sounds like you missed some good music, so I'm glad I caught the stream.

They played right until 4:50, closing with "East/West."

Did being in the park provide a ten minute leap forward in time?

the whole band put their rings together like the kids from captain planet, summoned a giant warren hellman, and traveled thru time, 10 min into the future, on little saddles affixed to his back.

not sure how you could have absorbed and processed such a deep and subtle event while watching a fucking stream, but you do you bro

The audio was great for that portion but I did, indeed, miss the mounting and riding of the giant Warren Hellman. Unfortunate.

Guess for some experiences you just have to GTTS.

I have not heard the new album, and I have not yet seen yesterdays show but looking forward to catching East/West. It is the best song I have heard them do. And my go to when I need energy. There are 3 versions on my CD as I got the early pre sale on the first album.

John Doe Trio>Chuck Prophet>Travelin' McCourys so far for me today.

McCourys be killing it.  Scarlet Begonias right now.

.

Just one mccoury today, apparently

(I tuned in late)

Noam pikelny standing in for Robbie? Sounds grate to me

Noam was stellar.  Jason Carter was outstanding.  Didn't catch the guitarist's name, but he was a helluva picker.

McCoury's>Jerry Douglas>Jason Isbell

A Emmylou Harris now.  She just started.

Thanks for the reports and pictures Dave. Looks a little cool weather wise this year. I don't see a lot of shorts and tank tops.

We'll be seeing the Del McCoury Band and followed by the Traveling McCourys doing Grateful Ball this coming Sunday in Maryland at the second annual Ramble Festival. Looking forward to it. Might go down to the low 50s even high 40s though. Long johns weather.

New Monsoon's  set impressed and my first time hearing Jason Isbell, all good...

Sounds like a sweet afternoon in the park, HD. Glad you got to attend and feel the park vibe.

It was great getting to visit the park, hear so much fine music, and connect with the San Francisco zeitgeist again.  The day started out clear and sunny, but the fog rolled back in around 3:30 and it got cool again.  I have one more day to visit with my family here, then fly back to Seattle tonight.

Here's a couple more photos from the McCourys and Emmylou sets:

There is nothing to complain about Hardly Strictly Blue Grass. Thank you Mr. Hellman.

Beautiful early fall weekend in the park with several thousands of my good friends, and a lot of really good live music.

See you next year!

I really enjoyed the Third Mind set and thoroughly enjoyed all three days! I caught some good music:

  • Chris Kingfish Ingram
  • Purple Glaze
  • Peter Rowan
  • Lilly Hiatt
  • Laurie Lewis
  • MccCrary Sister
  • Verlon Thompson and Shawn Camp's Guy Clark tribute
  • Jimmy Dale Gilmore
  • The Third Mind
  • Steve Earle
  • Sierra Hull
  • John Doe Trio
  • Valerie June
  • Neal Frances
  • Jerry Douglas
  • Jason Isbell
  • Emmylou Harris

it was a fantastic weekend in the park, not too crowded, cool comfortable weather, lots of friends and good vibes!

Thanks Andy. That was great. And the East West went a little over 8 mins.  Love that song.

I really love Dave Alvin. His guitar, his voice, his stage presence and him as a human being.

The Third mind. Superb musicians. All of them. And Mark did a great job guesting.  But I am not a huge fan of the singer. Maybe this band should just jam continuously.

I thought Jesse Sykes sounded better on the studio album.  On a festival stage, in cool weather, her voice was a little thin.

i like the music.

can't really handle the vocals.

> her voice was a little thin

> can't really handle the vocals

Oh, good. So it wasn't just me. Too ethereal for my tastes.

when i first heard the album i thought the singer was an old british guy.

agree the grace slick-esque vocals were an unnecessary distraction from the music
