Heading out soon. Probably won't get there till a bit after nine. Opener goes on at 8:30. If you want the ticket and know me, send me a text and / or just meet me there. If you don't know me, I am 70(in a few weeks). Overweight. And have a shoulder length "skullette"(pretty much bald). Dark blue long sleeve t shirt.
This is a great band. I have both albums and watched their set at HSBF from home but was not prepared for how good this was. Alvin was was in top form. No sign of age or illness. Mark Karan kicked ass. The whole band smoked.
Dave teased dark star in one jam and there were several nods to the Dead.
Jesse Sykes.
Since the first album arrived, I have been really into this band. The instrumentals are out of this world. But I was very disappointed in the vocals. I could not listen to one of my favorite songs, "Morning Dew" because of her vocals. Was not a fan. But last night was different. She sang with a force that I had not yet heard from her. At times very strong. Maybe the mix was better, I don't know. But at times she reminded me of Grace. Maybe that is what Dave sees in her. Her slow songs were still the low point of the show, but when she was belting it out, well, she was really good.
I almost did not go. 4 hr round trip. solo. And I am getting really lazy. But something told me I needed to be there. I had bought 2 tix when they went on sale, so at last minute(4 hours before showtime) I made the commitment. So glad I did. Show was surprisingly sold out, but there was no-one outside looking for a ticket (by the time I got there. Missed the opener). So I ate my extra, but it was still worth the cost of 2 tix.
mark karan i have always liked. holy shit, i had no idea he was that good. he was off the chain a couple of songs, dew included.
i knew the drummer was familiar, a guy next to me said he's richard thompson's drummer. I've seen him with him before. Incredible. what a player.
i liked jesse in person, very intense vibes.
and dave alvin. wow man. mad style, the coolest cat around. he had a couple of moments feedbacking off his stack and just fucking exploded into madness. when that guy goes on attack, power...just the creme of the crop. i love him. his solo on sally goes round the roses was one of the best things i've ever seen him do.
band is super dynamic. could hear a pin drop at times. crowd, for LA, was attentive and quiet! then they ramp it up to sonic madness. 5 stars.
and the shitty 2 hr drive through the belly of the beast was worth it. the troubadour is a thing for a reason.
