Thousands sign up to experience magic mushrooms as Oregon's novel psilocybin experiment takes off

will be interesting to see how this model plays out. according to the article, you have to actually do the mushrooms in a licensed center, and with the supervision of a professional, extra expenses, etc etc, a legal mushroom trip ends up costing $2000.  i get it, but jeez. 2 grand to be able to eat $10 worth of cubies.

i know some areas that have decriminalized psychedelics have stuff like mushrooms being openly sold to individuals for later use at normal prices, and parts of the world like holland and thailand have had open psilocybin sales for quite some time now, so luckily we do have models of open use as well, but considering how deeply anti drug culture and fear of the unknown is engrained into american society, i think its pretty likely that if psychedelics are legalized on a federal level, it may be via this model of needing to go to professional centers for supervised trips, which will effectively limit legal psychedelics to those who are well off enough to afford a $2000 recreational expense, won't allow for psychedelic experiences in nature, and will dramatically reduce how accessible psychedelics are to young adults, people in the 21-29 age range, when psychedelics are often the most attractive to a person, and have the potential for more significant, longer lasting transformative effects on things like how they see the world and how they treat other people.

i think its pretty safe to say that the way most of us on the zone use, or did use psychedelics, will likely remain illegal for quite a long time.

If you join the Divine Assembly, your church membership card could/might help with the legalities. It's sacrament, after all. I just joined the other day. Sacrament was available at the church gathering I attended. And classes and grow kits are available. Schroomversity. And some people act as guides when needed or wanted.

I know if I was to do something like that, the desert wilderness would be preferable to a couch being monitored. And putting out 2K would launch me to an angry state of mind - not what you want. How stupid. A great idea totally f**ked up in the execution. Thousands of people in Oregon have that much cash to waste that way? Step outside into the forest, people. Unbelievable.

>>>holland and thailand have had open psilocybin sales for quite some time now, so luckily we do have models of open use as well,

I'm 100% for this but I worry about the backlash if everybody pretends that there won't be a cost in lives to this. Not anywhere near what tobacco or alcohol cost us in lives but people will do stupid things and die on mushrooms. It will also push some people with pre-existing psychosis into full blown psychosis. This isn't weed.

When I brought this up in a Reddit thread it was my most down voted post ever which makes me think this isn't going to go well.

Please don't take my drugs and create yet another damn religion.

Seems the horse is already out of the barn.

Better than prohibition I guess.

>>>>>a legal mushroom trip ends up costing $2000.

I just want to know - do I actually owe somebody $200,000?

^fortunately, all your trips were illegal, so there's no bill. :)

The trip happening indoors is strictly for control of the situation and that doesn't seem natural at all.   I like to lose my shit outdoors among other like-minded and dedicated shit -losers. The 2k cost is a lot.   I'm glad these hard worked for therapies sre gaining traction, but they don't need to mimic big pharma in any way..

Go to the cow fields in northern Uruguay in May and find bags full of good shrooms free

In actuality, these are guided sessions that are supposed to be therapeutic and usually targeted towards particular issues the patient may have, such as OCD, addiction, end of life, etc.

The high cost pays for - hopefully - the knowledge, empathy, and experience of the guide - not just the boomers

In the article, they discuss a place near Springfield that will sell you 25 mg of psilocybin extract, which seems to be equivalent to about 4 g of dried shrooms, for $125. Still not cheap by a long shot, but not insanely expensive like the $2000 a session place.

Outdoors is def. the way to go, but I always like there to be a place of "refuge" where you can go when things get too strange - a house, an apartment , a tent- even a car.

Was once shroomin' on the beach when things got a little too weird. I was a long way from the car and so I built myself a little cage out of driftwood and crawled into it. I was all better in a few minutes.

>>> but I always like there to be a place of "refuge" where you can go when things get too strange

Absolutely. I like your creativity :).   I needed to be hugged when things got extremely strange and that made all the difference for me. I have no doubt that these psilly sessions will be professionally ran in a loving, caring and compassionate way, but hopefully the 2k will also fund monthly sessions for those who need the help but can't afford it.  The texas church i attended has a couple of ways to provide free ceremonies weekly for those who can't afford the $300 asking price for a bufo ceremony.  2k is a lot.

^^^^and good for you Slickrock!  Learn a new? :) and productive skill and meet some like-minded folks as well. Win-win..

I had planned on doing shrooms at Disneyland once. Got there on a weekday morning while schools were in session to avoid the kids, but instead there was a gigantic Christian youth group there. That wouldn't be to bad but these were apparently cool Christian youths and they were mostly wearing these t shirts with graffiti like/hot rod car art only with graphically explicit Jesus on a cross pictures with lot's of blood and suffering. So we noped out on that idea.

Instead we did them on the beach at Lime Kiln campground in Big Sur which is just an incredibly beautiful spot where the red wood grove goes right up to this amazing white sand beach. My wife and I were coming on strong on this mostly deserted weekday beach when an old couple made a b-line for us. Hi we're from Minnesota have you ever been to the Great Mall? Even outdoors can get tricky.

shi shi beach with a handful of fresh cyanescens

not an easy place to get to but a damn sure good one to blast off from

La Paloma, Uruguay with miles of empty beach going north. And cool wooded areas to chill in. Plus nobodies around anyways as it off season

Signed up for the experiment tonight at the Crystal Ballroom and it ain't costing $2000.  On the guest list and the boomers are free.

Will report back tomorrow.

"yeah just crawl right into the pupil. the mushrooms are inside, i promise. dont come out till they wear off. that will be $2000 please."

The eyes of Cubensis are upon you...

There's going to be a LOT of foot traffic in the local cow fields this year!

well Ken.... are you OK?

^^^Experiment successful, but a little tired today.   One side effect of the experiment is losing track of how many beers you have consumed.

Save $2,000 and have a vacation in south Mexico. Extremely beautiful places in Mexico to do shrooms. Spent 2 weeks in each place in 1994. A;so some great beaches and Oaxaca City is awesome.

this brings up an interesting point - under a model where the only legal use of mushrooms is in a guided trip/psychedelic therapy setting with professional supervision, what will the legal status of picking wild psilocybes be?
