'damn the torpedoes' was part of my first purchase of cassettes.

devo's 'duty now for the future' was in that batch, as well.

Souther Accents is a classic and the sax on this tune is so top notch, and the song feels so strong of being in that pocket of 15-16 years old. Mike Campbell has some low key tasty guitar work on just about every tune Petty ever put out.

One of the things that make Petty and the HBs so strong is they do it all so well, trippy, rockin, jamming, mellow, acoustic, and no one can craft a true pop song like tp. I have always loved well crafted pop songs, very few of them out there that meet my tastes. 

i just read Tom Petty's last interview with Rolling Stone, and he said that playing as Bob Dylan's backing band for close to two years made the Heartbreakers the top notch machine that they became.

He has been a full blown member of Fleetwood Mac since Petty died.   Saw them a while ago and he did the old Peter Green tunes justice.  Sadly, never got to see Tom Petty.

Petty trivia - Don Felder of the Eagles was his guitar teacher back in Florida.

Wildflowers is a top 10 all-time album for me. So many hidden gems on there. Rick Rubin said after he died that the album haunted him because he knew he'd never top it.

I think he was planning an acoustic-type tour for the 25th anniversary of the album when he died. I would've paid fucking big bucks for it too. Still hard to believe he's gone. 

Big fan of the first three records, the self-titled debut, You're Gonna Get It and Damn The Torpedoes.  I also dig his work in the Travelin' Wilburys, and his solo debut Full Moon Fever.  The last one is one of those records where almost every song got heavy radio play.

Two great deep cuts from Wildflowers. This album has some tear-jerkers. He'd just divorced his wife at the time.

I happen to have the good fortune to be married to one of the biggest Tom Petty fans. TP aficionado for sure. What a treat to see Benmont play with Phil last year!!!

Her clear favorite Petty album is You're Gonna Get It.  Hard Promises and Long After Dark are not far behind. 

And yes, just to ensure everyone knows how unique and amazing TP was...... He was alsoa Wilbury! --

I saw him in Akron, Buffalo and 2 nights at RFK on that '86 tour.  The Heartbreakers did a good job backing Dylan, but their opening set was pretty short and it was repetitive.   His song "Spike" grew old very quick.  
 

I did get to see him again on his final tour at NOLA Jazzfest.  They sounded good but he was looking pretty bad.  He had a ridiculously deep catalog of songs to draw from.
