Yeah, the Internet is F'd up.

RIP

Weird that it was his Heart...

I used to think that when this was all over
You might feel different about me
Yeah I always knew, one day you'd come around
Now I wonder if dreams are just dreams

Whoa oh whoa oh oh I'm having trouble
Letting you go

Baby look out your window, it's raining
On your summer home
You're by the fire keeping warm and dry
There's no one as honest as those in pain
Oh honey can't you see me? Will you
Let me inside?

(Chorus)

It's a restless world, uncertain times
You said hope was getting hard to find
But time rolls on, days go by
What about the broken ones?
What about the lonely ones?
Oh honey I'm having trouble letting you go
It's off in the distance, somewhere up the road
There's some easy answer for the tears you've cried
And it makes me uneasy, makes me feel different
Do you get scared when you close your eyes?

CAN IT Fishcane no

Petty's current condition is unknown. Multiple sources report that Petty has died, but this has not been confirmed. He was in critical condition when he was found.

At just about this time yesterday, I was telling my son the story of my first-ever record store purchase: a 45 single of this:

'damn the torpedoes' was in the second batch of cassettes i ever bought, along with 'duty now for the future' & 'crimes of passion'.

  • "Nelson Wilbury" – George Harrison
  • "Otis Wilbury" – Jeff Lynne
  • "Lefty Wilbury" – Roy Orbison
  • "Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr." – Tom Petty
  • "Lucky Wilbury" – Bob Dylan

Jim Keltner is alive and, as far as I know, well.  But, he wasn't a Wilbury.  He was self proclaimed sideman, Buster Sidebury.

RIP one of the greatest rockers ever.

A big loss for all Petty fans. What a shocker!

Let's all listen to some Tom this week.

RIP Tom

Now Reports He Is Clinging To Life = WTF What The Hell Is Going On ?

I went to the 2nd Bridge School benefit show, in Oakland, December 1988. The performers were legendary, the show was great, and I came away with new respect for Tom Petty whom I'd only seen on TV.

Neil Young, performing with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir, Billy Idol, and Nils Lofgren.

This link has videos of the complete performances of Dylan, CSNY, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
http://wzlx.cbslocal.com/2014/12/04/watch-bob-dylan-csny-and-tom-petty-p...

heard that too, plf...i think what one "report" made it sound like, was they prob pulled life support....and announced before it was "official"

Thanks for the link Judit, I was at that Bridge School show too. That was a good one!

UPDATE

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a "do not resuscitate" order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live through the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

- TMZ

awww man. this sucks.  I always had an appreciation of him as a true american rocker. At RFK 86 Dylan/Dead show 4 of us found a secret deluxe room behind the stage in the rental suites.  we wee screaming TOM TOM! from the balcony  He walked back behind the stacks just to wave at a few of us. During one of dylans long verses probably. It is a good memory. Thanks Tom, RIP.

damn.....

Damn. Tom Petty was in rarefied air.

Interesting timing given that tour ended last week. I'd imagine not a Brent speedball sitch but maybe letting loose a little too much post tour? Who knows. Maybe just Tom's time.

Buried Treasures was one of the best radio shows of the past 20 years. Few people knew more about American music than Mr Tom Petty.

PS to Hoover. Keltner was not a Wilbury.

Well he played drums for them

Point taken Timmy. They probably first considered Ringo and then thought it to be too much work.

Ooh, so close, Timmy, but a Sidebury is not a Wilbury.  Now Dhani Harrison was credited as Ayrton Wilbury on a couple of bonus tracks on the reissue, but Keltner just never got the proper surname.

We understand your confusion, what with the Prozac and everything.

Tom Petty’s Daughter Slams ‘Rolling Stone’ After Widespread False Reports Of Her Dad’s Death

VERY sad that Tom has died. A tough day all around.

What the fuck? Just heard/read this.

You were the real deal, Tom.

Thanks for the tunes.

R.I.P.

<<<@rollingstone my dad is not dead yet

He wont back down?

Hope!

Yahoo home page has him "near death".

Dewitt will give the final confirmation.

If he recieved reasonable quality CPR and got a good cooling protocol there is a meaningful chance of significant recovery. I see patients on a fairly regular basis that have had cardiac arrests in the field and are pretty much the same as they were before the arrest. Cooling the body and head for a couple days post arrest can make a huge difference in outcomes, but the main determinant IMO is quality CPR in the field. Good luck to Mr Petty and his family.

Still alive two hours ago.<<

Really?

Cool.

Good nite ! Nancy ,  Say Hi to your sis for me, we ran into her a few times at Peach :)  (( I forget her name tho )).

sucks

RIP Mr. Tom Petty

Feel fortunate to have attended some of the Vic Theatre shows when he played five nights back in 2003.  Still have a guitar pick from the run.

He rocked BottleRock this year, you could tell he was having a great time too. Only saw him one other time, back in 1988 or early 89 in Rochester. Wish I had seen him more. What an icon

RIP

Bummed he's gone. He gave his live to the muse. Glad I got to see him. A great live act. Rockin' shows. I think he knew he was loved.

Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix in the late 70's early 80's.

Sneaked into a Jackson Browne/Tom Petty show during intermission in Utah a few years ago, and I played air guitar while people stared at the Super Bowl.

Time to watch the "Running Down a Dream" DVD set.

was fortunate to see him and mike campbell sit in when i saw jj cale # mc cabe's.

rip

I'll say it again, He was a true American rocker.  An icon.  RIP

>>was fortunate to see him and mike campbell sit in when i saw jj cale # mc cabe's.

Wow, sounds like a great gig.  Would have loved to have seen J.J. Cale in this setting or otherwise.  Never did have the chance.

Wow what a show that would've been to see.

Here's some pics at the bottom of this story link.

Thank you TP for all the great songs over the years.

Feel lucky to have seen him.

RIP TP!!!

So terribly sad.  Petty was an alltimer.  Great songwriter and a true rock and roller.

RIP Tom...

I have that McCabes show Turtle, great stuff. Seen these Florida boys many times. 1976 at the Bangor Auditorium, young kid in the second row...1986 saw multiple shows of the Dylan/Petty run, got some nice recordings....2006 (?) Bonnaroo, second row again. One of the great rockers. RIP TP.

This one hits hard. So very sad.  Rest in Peace to a great American icon.  Your music will forever be a piece of our patchwork quilt. Thank you.

Saw this a few years ago on cable, also available on Netflix.

Runnin' Down a Dream is a 2007 documentary film about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, directed by Peter Bogdanovich. The 4-hour documentary chronicles the history of the band, from its inception as Mudcrutch, right up to the 30th-anniversary concert in Petty's home town of Gainesville, Florida, on September 21, 2006, at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center, University of Florida. The film features interviews with George Harrison, Eddie Vedder, Stevie Nicks, Dave Grohl, Jeff Lynne, Rick Rubin, Johnny Depp, Jackson Browne and more. Petty's solo career is also touched on, as is his time with The Traveling Wilburys

I saw him a few times luckily. One that stands out was the day after Jerry Garcia passed away. The show was in SLC, he dedicated Learning to Fly to Jerry.

First saw him at the Spectrum in Philly sometime in July or August of 1980.  Really tight band--much different than the GD in terms of how they presented their songs.  Fortunate to see him live several times--with Dylan and the Dead and with the Heartbreakers.  A talent and a vision.  Frankly, he is also one of the best DJs ever as his Sirrus XM show was always thoroughly enjoyable--he was a real encycopedia of musical knowledge.

RIP Brother

>Wow, sounds like a great gig.<

They had a re-broadcast of a 2006 Tom Petty interview on NPR's Fresh Air last night.  Good stuff.  I didn't know he retreated as a hermit into a run down cabin in the woods for a while in the late 1990s.
