Tommy Emmanuel

Forums:

I had the great fortune of seeing Tommy Emmanuel for the first time out at the West Hampton Beach Performing Arts Center on eastern Long Island.

The drive out east was therapeutic in its self.  I was fried.  Pretty town with plenty of parking near the theater.

The opening act was another artist from Australia - Rick Price. Wonderful singer, songwriter, acoustic guitar player and story teller.

Rick Price sang a song about his mother "Love Never Dies" that passed away when she was 47 & I was a basket case.

Okay Tommy comes out, standing playing, sitting and playing, plucking, picking, pinching, pounding, bending both strings & the neck, and exploiting the harmonics of his guitar with one hand at times.

He did things with the acoustic guitar that I didn't think were humanly possible.  Notes flying so fast, the brain barley has enough time to digest them all.

I first heard of Tommy some 30 years ago from Jorma. Just never had the chance to see him live. A very gifted man that never took a guitar lesson.

His Beatles Medley> Classical Gas had him multitasking like 40 piece band.

Tommy brought out Rick Price for a triple encore of Roy Orbison's Dream Baby & The Everly Brother's Wake Up Little Suzie, and solo instrumental Eva Waits.

Very special night that I will never forget.

Tommy is touring with David Grisman this fall.

Never miss a Tommy show

Glad you had fun, He is one special guitar player. Plus he is a super nice guy.

Nice review

"The drive out east was therapeutic in its self."

Just returned from a long weekend at my sister-in-laws' in Montauk.  I wouldn't call the drive out therapeutic (even on Thursday it took 4 hours from the Verrazano Bridge) but once you get there it's pretty damn relaxing.  I told my brother-in-law that it was if there was valium in the air.

Nice review, thanks.

Yes, he was my contribution to the "Guitarists That Are Better Than Jimi Hendrix" thread.

I need to see if he is playing anywhere nearby.

Thanks, Bart, Thom, and CR.

Bart, I got that Ty-Dye for you that I promised.  I need your address so I can mail it out.

Send me an email to [email protected]

Thanks

Joe

Amazing, but I don't know about never missing a show.

I feel like I'm good for a few more years.  Not sure how much he mixes it up tour to tour.

Unless he was likely to play with another mutant...

Thanks for the review!  I see from his tour schedule the guy keeps pretty busy;  bookings through January all over the USA,  Japan,  New Zealand & Taiwan.

With David Grisman, November 11 in Ithaca.  I might go to that one.

The one time I saw him a couple years ago was underwhelming.

I was ready to be underwhelmed, and head back home if the music didn't totally captivate me and listen to the Phish show live on XM.

I have seen a few of his shows on YouTube and last night was special. It was a longer version of his show at 2:45 minutes to close out his US tour.

Watching on PBS now. May have to pull the trigger on the Columbus show with Grisman in November.

Grab a ticket. $49 for that show is miracle. Still a few in the orchestra.

I would drive to that South Orange NJ show, but I just purchased a ticket to King Crimson to keep me out of trouble.
