Tonight: Mickey Hart & Zakir Hussain to Preview New ‘Sound Consciousness’ Project during Rainforest Benefit Concert

Tonight, Apr. 22, KEEN and Jerry Garcia Family will present ‘Rainforest Benefit Concert – Protect The Tongass, airing on FANS.live.

The schedule for the benefit show is now available, and it includes the addition of a preview of Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain’s Sound Consciousness: Drones for Sonic Bathing. The event will also see performances by artists such as Benevento/Russo Duo, JoJo Hermann, Jack Casady, The Infamous Stringdusters, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Duane Betts, ALO, Lettuce, Nicki Bluhm, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, TAUK, The Hold Steady, Southern Avenue and more.

Hart and Hussain’s preview will occur at the very end of the event, at 11:50 p.m. ET. The full project will be hosted on Commune, a “masterclass platform for well-being.” Sound Consciousness was inspired by the Grateful Dead’s “Drums” and “Space” segments during live shows. The audio and visual meditation program consists of a 15-minute session for 10 days, featuring artwork by Hart and audio created by the duo, mixing Hart’s drones and Hussain’s percussion.

The Rainforest Benefit Concert aims to capture the “spirit of the Grateful Dead’s Rainforest Benefit Concert, held at Madison Square Garden on September 24, 1988.”

“We’re asking you to take action to reinstate the Roadless Rule on the Tongass National Forest and work with Congress to pass the Roadless Area Conservation Act,” reads a statement from organizers. “Please spread awareness, sign the petition, and help out in any way that you can.”

Alongside the event, KEEN is running a contest in which they are giving away pair of limited edition KEEN x Garcia Newport H2 sandals featuring artwork by Jerry Garcia. Enter to win here.

Tune in for free on April 22, starting at 8 p.m. ET via FANS.

Love Mickey. Love KEEN's. Love the Rainforest. This is a winner.

PS. For the '88 Rainforest Benefit I sat in the that upper section (400's) in the back rafters. It was a loony carnival of illicit behavior, like a private club floating in a dark cloud. Whatever your game was, you could do it there.
