I hope this is true! Im interested.  They say the tax forms are from 2005. Might not matter as all the people that would sit in judgment are likely to be tax-evading fatcats too., if Maddow got them that would be a big deal for her.  Assange?laugh

Ha! Trump just released his tax returns. wonder why?

Can somebody post one or three factual bullet points?

She talks too much.

Trump will want to tapp Rachael Maddow's  lines now.

destroy the microwave, Rachael!!!

She has 2 pages of his returns from 2005  ..... its a start

At the very least it will keep the dialog going. she seems to be using the opportunity to remind people why we should see what he has been up to lately tax-wise and connections with other countries.

Parts Of Donald Trump’s 2005 Tax Returns Made Public

The White House bashed the media for publishing them, and said the president paid $38 million in income tax that year.

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow discussed parts of a copy of President Donald Trump’s federal income tax returns from 2005 on her show late on Tuesday.

She teased the news an hour before she went live on air, where she was later joined by Trump biographer and investigative journalist David Cay Johnston, who obtained the returns.

The returns showed that Trump “earned more than $150 million in the year 2005—and paid just a small percentage of that in regular federal income taxes,” according to the Daily Beast:

Daily Beast contributor David Cay Johnston has obtained what appear to be the first two pages of Trump’s 2005 federal income tax return, and published an analysis of those pages on his website, DCReport.org. The Daily Beast could not independently verify these documents.

The documents show Trump and his wife Melania paying $5.3 million in regular federal income tax—a rate of less than 4%. However, the Trumps paid an additional $31 million in the so-called “alternative minimum tax,” or AMT. Trump has previously called for the elimination of this tax.

“This document has been made available,” Maddow said. “That may be the most important part of this story.” Maddow also stressed that the release raises questions about the president’s argument that he can’t release his tax returns because he is under audit.

In a response to Maddow’s announcement before her show, the White House released a statement saying that in 2005 Trump had paid $38 million in tax on an income of $150 million, and adding that Trump had a responsibility to “pay no more tax than legally required.”

The president’s tax history has been under scrutiny since the real estate mogul launched his campaign from the lobby of his Fifth Avenue skyscraper in 2015. Democrats, some fellow Republicans and more than a million petitioners demanded to see the documents, which presidents from the previous four decades had released during their campaigns.

Trump eluded them all, and just two days after his inauguration, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said the president was “not going to release his tax returns” because “people didn’t care.”

Such an abrupt refusal followed months of Trump dancing around the issue, saying he couldn’t share his tax returns because they were under audit by the Internal Revenue Service (although the IRS said there was nothing prohibiting their release) and later pledging to do so if his rival, Hillary Clinton, released emails related to her private email account.

In October 2016, the New York Times reported that it had obtained three pages from then-candidate Trump’s 1995 personal tax return. That partial return showed that Trump took a $916 million loss that year, a move that experts who reviewed the filing for the Times said may have allowed him to avoid paying personal income taxes for almost two decades.

Trump admitted that he had taken the massive deduction in a debate with Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton a week after the Times report. “The write-off is a wonderful thing,” Trump said, but not before insisting, “I pay taxes.”

After that debate, Trump’s son Eric said his dad “pays a tremendous amount of tax.” However, he went on to cite instances of the Trump Organization paying taxes as a business, not personal income taxes.

At the first presidential debate, Clinton accused Trump of not releasing his tax returns because they would show how little taxes he paid. “That makes me smart,” Trump replied.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Journalist Who Received Trump Tax Return Questions If Trump Leaked It Himself

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston says he received two pages from the 2005 document in the mail from an unknown source.

I'll say this:  I pretty much turn off the news all day and check out only two vids:

1) Robert Reich's daily Resistance Report on facebook

2) Rachel Maddow show on youtube

I only recently started watching Maddow - very entertaining way to spend 30 - 40 minutes after a long day's work.

On a relatively serious note: WHY DOES TRUMP REFUSE TO RELEASE HIS TAX FORMS?  Is there anyone here who doesn't want to know this?

Brings me back to Al Capone's Vaults with Geraldo.

groundbreaking... nyt covered this a year ago. it's info that was already out there

Interesting.. we found out that President Trump does indeed pay his taxes. The media are a bunch of tools.

I missed viewing Tucker Carlson for that groundbreaking revelation?

2005? lol

>Brings me back to Al Capone's Vaults with Geraldo.

lol!  I remember sitting with baited breath by the tv with the family. What a nudge I was!

Instead of waiting to release some real meat that could have potentially taken Don down she served her overly inflated ego and the movement to discredit lost traction yet again.

>> groundbreaking... nyt covered this a year ago. it's info that was already out there

Pretty sure that was tax info for 1995 (1 page)...

916 million dollar tax loss. Which could of possibly given him exemption for 18 years...

A few things to consider on this.

On the topic of Maddow getting schooled on all of this with what appears to be more Trump favorable than anything on the surface ("see, he paid taxes"), you have to understand that Maddow and team certainly received and reviewed them well prior to launching the social media blitz ahead of her 9:00pm show time. It wasn't a first time, grand reveal on the air. So, knowing that some people would view it as Trump positive, why grandstand on it? Also, by launching the social media blitz, they also knew that the WH could pre-empt her with an announcement, which they did. Again, why reveal it and why grandstand it?

Clearly, she wasn't schooled as the trolls are playing it up to be.

What did it do then? It afforded the opportunity to a) keep the conversation going and overall topic alive especially in "tax season", b) force the WH to act (even if, as some circles are saying, the WH might've been the leaker), c) positions the WH to have to keep answering questions, one of which should be "well, if you are saying he did/does pay taxes, why not go ahead and release them all"?, d) lay out to the public all of the potential missing pieces which may have been a topic much earlier in the campaign when Russia was a small story, now that it's much larger, the heat is hotter.

Interestingly, we now have seen the famous 1995 returns when he lost just south of a billion dollars and used that to position himself to potentially not have to pay taxes for the following 18 years. We don't know if he did or didn't because he won't release any. We also now see the 2005 returns which are 20 years later and while they show taxes paid, they also show a $100m loss which might be something done so he could not pay taxes for some subsequent years.

As pointed out, it also reveals that, but for the AMT (alternative minimum tax), he would've paid 3% vs. the 25% he paid. While we've not seen his final tax plan, the early word was that his plan would abolish that tax. Surprise, surprise.

I will keep repeating this, the man lives to show things in peoples faces. IF he is clean, the very simple act of releasing his tax returns would be his ultimate "in your face distractors" move, at least so far. It begs the incredibly reasonable question of why he will not do it, doesn't it?

I think he leaked it himself. "See, I paid taxes"

Now who wants to talk about Russia?

I think he leaked it himself. <<<

Another distraction.

Three hearings today on the Muslim ban, Trumpcare in big trouble, wiretapping, Russia.

Lots of folks around here have had way too much to think.

And when any of you ever pays 38 million in taxes I'll take your complaints a bit more seriously.

"Why would she do this?"

Ah, because she's a ratings whore?

A whopping 4%

4%? 4% of what?

Also Thom, I'd say there is a big difference between owed and paid.

@funder

Scott Dworkin, tweets daily with documents outlining Russia connections, election tampering, ties to organized crime.

What are the tax returns hiding?

"Behind every great fortune is not only a great crime but a series of ongoing crimes."

Check out TYT (The Young Turks) sometime, Johnny D. They're my favorite youtube news source and they don't sell advertising - so much less corporate influence than Maddow...as jonas noted she spends so much time polishing her ego that journalism tends to fall through the cracks while she fluffs her career.

Gotta be one of two things - either the returns would show something he doesn't want publicized - more Russian entanglements, unpaid taxes, sketchy deals, etc. - or he's doing the long troll and will eventually reveal his pristine tax docs and confound his enemies.

I'm betting on the former.

Most nights she has a 30 minutes of content, but 60 minutes to fill. She circles the topic for the first 15 minutes.

It is my opinion that RM dialed it back after seeing what happened to Olberman.

Hard to preach without a pulpit.

She is one of the few who went hard on Sessions.

i like rachel maddow as much as i hate chris mathews.

She reminds me of Rush Limbaugh but female and neo-liberal. Entertainment 'news' designed to get viewers whipped up into a frenzy on a shoestring of specious content.

After last night, that tinfoil fits her well.

Thanks for actually having a clue Mark, very refreshing.

Tax returns.....

Trump:  25%

Obama:  19%

MSNBC:  24%

Bernie:  13%

Amazing how the Socialist pays the lowest tax rate.  I guess he needs the cash for his numerous vacation houses.  Go comrade!

Markd once again has the best post on a political thread.  I appreciate your input.

Thanks for the recommendation, Willows.  I've seen bits and pieces of the Young Turks, but if they are on youtube, I may check them out more.

Like I said, Rachel Maddow is pretty entertaining, IMHO.  And I would love to see some well-made arguments (emphasis on the "well-made") to debunk the info that Rachel has to share.  Or at least to provide believable clarification to the lack of official information regarding what all of these billionaires are doing with big money purchases that don't make business sense.

I still haven't heard a good reason why Trump does not release his taxes and instead provides weak excuses for not releasing them.

Thom,

Why doesn't Trump release his Taxes?

Thom,

it really seems like you need to go on vacation

 Turn on the music

turn off your mind

meditate, and like I would tell myself be open to other points of view

Flailing much?

what's the clinical definition of insanity

why do you keep screaming to an empty auditorium

Why do you keep sprinting full speed in order to bash your head against the concrete wall over and over again

I will stop cutting and pasting if you do LOL

have a great day and happy birthday Phil

yeah buddy!! seeeee!!!! you CAN do it!

no link. no stink.

and i'd surmise that sanders pays the lowest taxes since he's the poorest out of those people...

I probably I'm at 5% Alzheimer's

trumps dad had dementia

by some peoples observations trump is like 20% gone

I know he's an entitled elitist egomaniac and hey self-centered dishonest man who is also a crook and has little moral values

He can't just answer questions

partially because he chooses to attack And deflect

but also we honestly think he can't remember them or what he said last

That since I'm open-minded I will say is an entitled slime ball no integrity crook and there's no fucking way he paid his fair share of taxes and it's way less than Bernie Sanders

>> Why doesn't Trump release his Taxes?

Because he can't win more votes/support by releasing them?

I still love Rachel.

>> IF he is clean, the very simple act of releasing his tax returns would be his ultimate "in your face distractors" move, at least so far. It begs the incredibly reasonable question of why he will not do it, doesn't it?

It's not clean or unclean, black or white, binary thing.

There is lots of grey area tax manipulations that might be spun against him. Even if what he did is explicitly legal, it doesn't mean it won't end up in a campaign ad next cycle. Why give your enemies ammo?

Russians and Trump campaign story is going drip, drip, drip (leak) for quite some time. Trump leaked these returns you can tell Rachel called them and they knew what she had so they released it. I think Rachel tried to get them to release more tax returns than she had in hand.

Failing President = the Flamin' Tweeto

Democratic tax leakers will be sent to Siberia

Maddow: The Most Important Part of Trump's Leaked Tax Return

Without the alternative minimum tax, which President Trump wants to end, he would have paid taxes at a lower rate than America's poor.

By Alexandra Rosenmann / AlterNet  March 15, 2017

http://www.alternet.org/economy/maddow-most-important-part-trumps-tax-re...

As a presidential candidate, Donald Trump bucked the long-standing tradition of releasing his tax returns, and as president, he continues to hold firm. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow opened a small window of insight into Trump's tax history when she revealed a few pages of his 2005 returns on her show Tuesday.

According to the White House, which confirmed the report, Donald Trump earned over $150 million in 2005 and paid $38 million in taxes that year.

"We got the [two pages of Trump's 1040 form] today from a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist who's better on financial matters than almost anybody else in the business," Maddow opened. "His name is David Cay Johnston."

The documents showed up mysteriously in Johnston's mailbox—and Johnston, who joined Maddow on her show Tuesday, hasn't ruled out the possibility that President Trump leaked them himself.

"What's most important about this tax return ... is that under the regular tax system, remember we have two tax systems, well-to-do people, you and I, file, effectively, calculate our tax twice; the regular tax system and the alternative minimum tax," he explained.

"If we didn't have the alternative minimum tax, and Donald Trump, in writing, wants to end the alternative minimum tax, he would have paid taxes at a lower rate than the bottom half of taxpayers; the poor in this country who make less than $33,000 [annually]," Johnston revealed.

"Think about that," he continued. "$153 million almost, of income, he would have paid a little over $5 million; less than 3.5 percent, less than the half of taxpayers who make under $33,000."

I did. A statement isn't a leak:

In a response to Maddow’s announcement before her show, the White House released a statement...

$31 million of it was alternative minimum tax, which he wants to get rid of.
