So, went to Philly Thursday as a Fathers Day gift from my daughter. Shes 25 and is a 2nd Gen Head...we had floor seats and the vibe was great from the get go....
the tempos are up and the jamming sustained and meaningful.A little back ground. I saw my first shows in '80 and saw Red Rocks shows from '81 - '84 when living out in CO. In my time ive seen mind blowing shows and flat out fucking clunkers. It happens. '84 - '85 were hit or miss for me.
Back to Philly. High energy, great mix of songs in spots we hadnt seen them. The DS>El Paso was a highlight of the rocking first set. Otiel brought FOTM sweet and forceful and that dropped into New Speedway and the Estimated>Eyes was strong and sweet and Jeff took a solo in Eyes that made me and my kid scream in joy. The SMOKING Cumberland out of Space kept the party going.
When she was an infant Ripple was her lullaby song and when they played it for the encore we hugged and sang along in a whole new way...
On to SPAC
LTGTR had everyone up and singing and it was kinda an all night sing along except for BTW and Days Between which were the only two songs that ' reverted ' to Weir's slower tempo urges. Second song First set SCARLETT gave way to a ripping Deal and the rest of the first set, other than the aforementioned BTW was super fun. Birdsong took us out there and GDTRFB got us home to the end of the first set bouncing all the way to the set break.
TLEO opener and jammed out into TERRAPIN and we all were trying to get there and that dropped into a sweet He's Gone that jammed out and i thought we were gonna get into the Drums but no...an The Other one prelude jam that culminated in some of the biggest, sickest bass bombs from Oteil that i have ever heard, ever...ever, until Mickey hit some beam notes that rattled my insides...SO LOUD, SO DEEP so cleansing...Days Between was ok, the Standing on the Moon in Philly was better and Bobby's 2023 Lovelight is still delivered in full voice and feeling.
The obligatory OMSN set us off into the night and home to rest
Overall, we, my daughter and I and me and the old lady, had two fun nights of psychedelic rock and roll
