Age appropriate and right up your alley. Enjoy.

i was not born with enough faces or palms to contend with this. holy shit.

What's the problem with this?  Little kids have a lot of fun at TXR kid's shows. I've taken little kids to TXR for Phil's kid shows and they have a great time. Why not?

for me its kind of just a cherry on top, that in addition to hardly playing any non-family band shows with really skilled "friends" anymore, they are playing childrens music...kinda the anthesis to complex psychedelic improvisation.

theres nothing wrong with it, im sure its fun for little kids, and its pretty cool that phil fans can take their little ones to see a phil and/or txr show just for them.

its more that im really sad that this is how things turned out, and a kids show of xmas songs seems representative of phils new direction. i dont mean to imply that phil should be doing anything else, if this is what makes him happy and keeps TXR doing well, great! im just bummed that phil is no longer playing shows id like to attend. i miss phil and i dont want my next show to be some requisite "i guess ill go see the family band one more time cause phils getting old show"...id like to get in one more great show with a real PLF lineup. id be happy with one set.

Like...say...American Beauty?

daylight, you're swinging and missing on this one, in a number of ways.

Phil has been playing lots of really good music outside of the Family Band with a large variety of very good players.

I've seen I think 22 Phil shows at TxR this year and only three of them were with the Family Band. Almost all the other shows featured different top quality players every time, and almost every show was at least very good and more than half were BLAZING good, with one in the running for my show of the year (and that one had almost no Grateful Dead music played).

You and a lot of others have missed a lot of great playing this past year.

And the kids thing has absolutely nothing to do with anything else Phil is doing or not doing. There's never anything wrong with playing music for kids, and I don't see how it signifies the ending or beginning of anything; it's just musicians playing music for kids, which is just cool.

Because kids are cool.

And Phil's not done.

The backstory I hear is that Phils favorite thing to do is tell stories to the grandkids, only makes sense he'd want to play music for them too...   long live the Lesh!

Heathen

daylight does get A few basehits here

The bands aren't as good as they used to be IMNHO

 And we're all getting older

However, your "loyalty" and commitment is admirable  and I like it when the bill of your hat is tipped down low

I didn't see you post on the Scott Amendola thread yet

The Kids' "Gingerbread Show" was Fun to hear.  Something at TXR for Kids & Parents before the later Music.

I happened to tune in,  and thought it was fun.

People bitching and moaning about it probably didn't listen.  Sounded like Phil doing a Kids show,  and you could hear the Rambunctious Kids singing along to the traditional X-Mas Carols.

They were all having a Blast.

Many Thanks to that intrepid Streamer for being there and sharing the Audio.

Some people are Wise to that,  others not.

If I wasn't such a Lanch shill, I might question his TXR objectivity.

Lanch shill,

do you find it challenging to stay monogamous when you fawn over heathern so.......

however, I do not question your integrity.. ( u be a Dweezil slut too)

Phil has been playing lots of really good music outside of the Family Band with a large variety of very good players.

its been at least 2 years since ive seen phil or been to txr, but i try and constantly give new shows a listen with open ears. the last run he did with molitz seemed like it would have been pretty good, but other than that i cant think of a single run of shows that i thought sounded good on recording or that i was disappointed about missing.

IME, the best case scenario with grahame, ross james, alex koford and the rest of the gang is that they stay out of the way...more often than not they detract from a strong lineup of good musicians. i have never seen a show with any of those three people that i truly enjoyed on the same level that i do bands like classic PLF, furthur, JRAD, etc. at best they are "fun" and have "some moments".

again, this is just my experience, i havent listened to every show - far from it. but there are only so many times i can go to a show and leave disappointed before i stop giving more chances. this is not coming from some zoner on the other side of the country bitching about lineups they will never see...ive tried to do the family band/phils kids thing probably 10-20 times...at least. i have never once left satisfied. i stand by the opinion that phil has a "new direction" and the music has taken a drastic dive in quality. its not bad, its not like they are missing notes or fucking up songs, and im sure a few times per night there are some solid moments in the jams, but for me theres only so many times that can be entertaining after seeing far better shows with the same format and songs 100+ times.

I cant say for sure, but, i think if you asked me 25 years ago, if id go see Phil playing and singing Xmas Carols at his own club in San Raf in 2018 ?

Hell yes....and if it was local , i wouldnt miss it for the world...Phil has spoiled us over the years w so much great music, that now we're comparing everything

Just enjoy it....(or not) ...and be grateful for what he has given us over those years....anything we get now is gravy on grace as far as Im concerned. And yes, every once in a while a pure nuggett is still being unleashed...

People who know me should know that I'm no shill.

If I don't think it's good then I'm not into it, no matter who they are or who they play with or for.

From my perspective as someone who has been there Phil has been killing it often this year, and I'm not talking about the Family Band (although they're not bad in their own place).

But if you're not there, you just don't know.

And that's a fact.

Clearly, many just don't know.

For the greater good, I repeat...

Phil's not done yet.

GTTS!

I couldn't see where anyone called you a shill,  only your shill  called himself a shill

I would be comfortable calling you a big fan, abd loyal to the roots and branches of the Bill Graham tree.   It's also completely true if you're not at the show you can't be at the show and I haven't gone to many shows at Terripin recently for a few reasons

sometimes you win sometimes you lose.   Both Daylight and heathen can be right at the same time

Some rise
some fall
some climb
to get to terrapin

at any show there should be a few moments of inspiration at a minimum.  Sometimes Maybe a quarter of a show or maybe even half  a show if the stars are aligned. And maybe that is why we climb the mountain

well lance, you are getting your wish. there is a new sless lineup and im probably going to GO TO THE SHOW.

i still consider lineups like the one for the upcoming butte benefit to be "family band" shows, as they contain most of the family band in addition to proper PLF players, but its been a long time and sless+molo with phil is hard to pass up.

the lineup seems huge and i doubt all those people will all be playing together...to my mind, phil, seals, sless, molo and lebo or loiacono would make a great band just on their own, and i think would play an objectively better show on their own...i totally get having grahame involved in everything, but im not sure why koford and james need to always be in lineups that already have a killer drummer(in this case one of the best PLF drummers of all time), and multiple skilled guitar players. oh well. im sure if molo and sless are on board there will be more than just a few moments of greatness, and as always im ready to give ross james and grahame lesh another chance - its been a long time since ive seen them play. although im not sure i have hope for koford anymore, but im guessing since there are so many other guitars and molo is there, he will just be singing and adding some simple, barely there guitar or drums like he used to in the early days. i actually really enjoyed him there...it was nice to have some good vocals to add to the mix, which frees up the other slots in the band to not need to be filled by someone who can sing, and the rest of the lineup can focus more on people who are skilled on their instruments...that worked pretty well actually.

day - I need a ticket - too slow on the draw - seeing Stu on  Thursday much closer to home

That benefit will be more Americana-soul than face melting freak out due to the somber nature of the event.

i didnt get one either, oh well
