Serious is right. Thanks for the concern but I'm OK up here in Smoke Lake City.
Fires burning throughout the state and earlier this week the valley was filled with smoke. Then we had a fire up in the foothills by the Universtity that burned maybe 600 acres. That is out. But the three major fires burning down south are massive and the situation is dire. One is over 100,000 acres with 0% containment.. We had a hotter than hell summer last year, low snowfall this winter, and that land out there is ripe for burning. Add to that, we've had sustained high winds for about a week, 30-40 mph, and when a 1,000 acre grass fire started, it turned into 10,000 acres REAL quick. Maybe less than a day.
They're saying over 200,000 acres have burned so far this year. Gov just declared no fireworks statewide this year except areas designated by a local municipality, and many cities are nixing July 4th fireworks altogether. One Utah House Respresenttaive who owns a fireworks company is considering a lawsuit. Can you believe it? What an asshole.
I have a friend who is a fire chief in one of the rural counties and he sent some of his crew to the new Wild Goose fire and they sent him these pics. I had him send them to me so I could share them with you. He said a problem with these fires is the roots stay hot and keep burning and these areas will need to be monitored for quite a while.
It continues to be such a strange year in the NorCal. We are on our second summer of unusually cool weather while the rest of the world cooks. I mean we had a high of 79 a few days ago in Sacramento and no real fires to worry about. We all know we will pay for this. If you mention anything about how cool it has been on r/Sacramento you get banned because no one wants to jinx it.
Yes BSS, thanks for the thought. Next month it will be 8 years since my friend, Battalion Chief Matt Burchett, was killed fighting a wild fire in California, due to the incompetence of CAL Fire.
There is no way to express what an amazing individual Matt was.
The deserved tributes from the community were amazing. Booked a local arena for his service and the escort on the freeway to burial 30 miles away was moving. People lining the interstate and people on every overpass. Tearing up just remembering. His amazing wife just remarried to a nice guy, who asked her son for permission to marry his mom. The love Matt and his family cultivated still abounds.
Just look at that face, and the love and joy in those eyes.

Just want to recognize the crews who fight these fires are literally doing the hardest. work. possible.
and most of them work for peanuts with no benefits or pension. Some, for even less still.
I admire all of them for their courage, their grit, and their sacrifice.
