Yep he said more on the way. Thanks Mike

That was a fun day, thanks for sharing!

Really, really fun day. A little hot, but the music was great.

So sweet that some of us were there

If y'all wanna share any aforementioned fun memories of your times it'd no doubt be interesting to the rest of the class

I was living on a 4.5 acre farm about 30 miles to the north back in 82.  Our whole household drove down to the show.  It was shortly after sunrise, and the ground fogs were of that 2001 space odyssey tunnel vision type, until we got to Monroe,  then thru the small rolling hills with pockets of ground fog between the oaks and fields.  The Country fair site was a bit backwards, as the dead were in "long term parking" area, but we got situated quickly

We got a spot in front of the Deads stage near the soundboard.  On the other stage, the Fighting Instruments of Karma Marching Chamber Band/Orchestrathe along with the flying karamazov brothers started the show. Can't remember the names of all the bands on that stage, think Robert Cray was the headliner.  The deads stage was empty, but with time drum risers went up, amps, mics, the stage was built before our eyes.

Peter Rowan did a solo set on the Deads stage, a sound check for the PA, which I believe was George Rellis's (sp?), and not the deads (which went from Grass Valley to Seattle).  It had some really wispy psychedelic swirls that was most trippy.

No sound check for the dead...  you can hear the instruments swirling during Bertha as the volumes get adjusted / turned on (Brent)).

Seeing the videos reminded me of the parachuters at the beginning of the show.  There was also a plane that flew overhead after Bertha.

A cool side note for me was the weather, as I was in meteorology school at the time.  There was a hurricane off of Baja that had dumped it's moisture into a rare late august monsoonal flow that transported that moisture a thousand miles north in 24 hours.

The second set started with a Ken Kesey introduction, his benefit for the Springfield Creamery after all, into the first Day Job, Women are Smarter, into the first West LA Fade Away.  It was a solid first set, but a great second set.  Meanwhile, you could see thunderstorms popping in the Cascades to the E and SE, while high clouds started streaming over the site during drums.  Space went into the Wheel, and it really felt like if the Thunder don't get you....  The over head clouds got thicker, the Cascade Cells were maxing out, sunset was approaching, and the sea breeze kicked, with swirls of dust and the feel of oncoming storm..

The Other One

That was epic!  After that, a 2 hour long sunset, with every color imaginable, absolutely epic if you were sober, we were all dosed!!!

Musically, the post drums is some of the best Dead i've seen, but between the drugs, and how it interacted with the weather, it was perfect for me.  But seriously folks, this has to be one of the best Black Peters of all time.  But the entire block is great!  The unexpected encore of "Duprees Diamond Rag" pissed I few I know off, but I loved it, nobody saw it coming, hadn't even been played in years!

After driving home, had a hell of a thunderstorm, then it poured the rest of the night thru the next day.

*First time played

One of the best I ever attended. Every time I hear a recording of that show I am blown away all over by how hot the music was that day.

Note on set list. It was not Ken Kesey who introduced the 2nd set. It was Ken Babbs..

I was nursing a broken arm - in a cast - and a head full of cubensis.. We had a huge meet-up right about in the center of the field - about 30 folks. Older daughter - 4 at the time - was running all around having a great time. One-year-old daughter was sleeping, so we built a fortress around her with all our gear so she could sleep in peace and safety. Didn't work - some asshole came tromping right through it all and stepped on her. She was fine, and the tromper was dealt with.

It was HOT! I was sweating in my cast.  Despite the heat and the interloper, a good time was had by all. The Playin' sammy was delicious.

Trying to get out of there in the dark was crazy! It took hours. No lights, no signs, no staff with flashlights. We followed someone who looked like they knew where to go, but they didn't. Dead end. We all had to turn around on a one-lane path, one at a time. Somehow we made it out of there and home.

There's nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.

The set lists say Babbs did the intro, but it was Kesey, as this benefit was for his sister.  Listen to the voice on the recordings, that's Kesey not Babbs.  I still remember him in his referee shirt, talked with him that day too.

Druba Noodler ~ You experienced what you did buddy, but that was Babbs on the stage. That's who I saw on stage, watching from the Phil Zone on the field. I did encounter Mr. Kesey that day as well.

That's what everyone tells me, so you all must be right, but yeah, memories are funny that way.

82 wasn't a benefit, 72 was for Springfield Creamery (Nancy's Yogurt, Chuck and Sue Kesey). Ken didn't have a sister. It was Babbs. Complete clusterfuck leaving. Waited in a line of cars behind a parked pick up truck.. Walked to the junction just as a message came over the staff radio "It's everyone for themselves".

We took the bus from downtown, which made it pretty much stress-free in both directions.

I loved that 82 show, on cassette it sounded just like sunlight. sitting in the crowd, there were a couple of strange experiences as one might expect, for some reason there was a small group of people near us who set fires around where they were sitting, which happened to be around where we were sitting. Dry grass fires made it a little uncomfortable.

It was definitely hot in the sun, and I was glad I had a backstage pass so I could hang out and dance in the shade just off the stage. All in all, it was a really lovely day.
