That's an understatement.  One thing that makes Vermont unique is Act 250 - a comprehensive land use scheme that preserves Vermont's rural and small village culture by making it very difficult to construct things like billboards, McDonalds, and Wall-Marts.   You can really see this by crossing the bridge over the Connecticut River from White River Junction, VT into Lebanon, NH.   On the Vermont side, there is nothing but little villages and country stores but as soon as you cross over into New Hampshire, there are all the big box stores, brightly lit signs, and fast food places galore.

Anytime you want to come to Vermont, Judit, I can think of many here who would be honored to have you stay with them. 

It is interesting to note that you live in New York, China>Rider, and you will be sending your spawn to college in Vermont - while my wife and I live in Vermont and it looks like we will be sending our spawn to college in New York.

Congrats to your son, UVM is a great school.

She appears to have chosen Ithaca College. Interestingly, Ithaca struck as very much like Burlington in many ways. she has lots of fiends at UVM, but after 18 years in Vermont - she wanted to leave Vermont for college.

Among other schools, she was also accepted at Lewis & Clark - and that would have about solidified a meet-up with Judit, but she dedided in the end that it was too far away from home.

Congrats to your girl, too, Six...she will no doubt do great things no matter where she lands.

I had the pleasure of staying in Vermont for three years during law school.  In many respects, it does seem like someone took the Willamette Valley and plunked it down in the middle of the Northeast, with similar liberal politics, progressive land use schemes, and thriving hippie and DIY cultures.   But everything in Vermont, from the weathered Green Mountains to the picture perfect little villages, seems older and more compact and without a big urban center like Portland (Burlington is roughly one third the size of Eugene).  While the Adirondacks in Upstate New York to the West and the White Mountains of NH to the Northeast provide somewhat of a geographic buffer from the sites and sounds of the East Coast, after a while you get the sense of being on an island, surrounded by much different and places like Boston and Plattsburgh, NY.  By comparison, the Willamette Valley is just a small part of a much bigger geo-political region stretching from San Francisco to Vancouver, BC.   Still, Vermont is the only place east of the Rockies in which I could ever see spending an extended period of time.

 Congrats on getting the kiddo into college.  Lewis & Clark was my second choice for law school, but went with Vermont because (1) I wanted a chance to live in rural New England and (2) there are much fewer distractions in a tiny village out in the sticks of the Green Mountains compared to Portland, Oregon.   The law school isn't in Burlington as many people assume, but is instead in little South Royalton in the White River Valley about 30 miles south of Montpelier:

Pizza and Mexican food are 2 of the 5 basic food groups.

I make my own Mexican food that tastes much better than anything in any restaurant here.  I don't eat much pizza since I turned 50 as I'd rather drink beer and it's very hard to do both without gaining weight when your metabolism slows down. Plenty of good vegetables here in Vermont. That's an important food group for me.  If you want to live a long life - it should be your most important food group too.

I have fond childhood memories of waking up early, driving to Vermont and skiing all day with my father. It's a beautiful state.

My first time skiing was at Stowe circa 1978.

My first time getting drunk and barfing in a church was in Woodstock, VT circa 1982.

Well, I'm still good in the beer food group at least. I quit cigs 14 years ago unlike some fools here - and I gave up soda years ago too

Meanwhile, as the spouse of an employee, I have enjoyed a complimentary season pass at Stowe for the past 18 years. It is the best mountain the East has to offer and Vail is in the process of purchasing it - so next year I will get a complimentary EPIC Pass and will be able to ski out west for free too.

Virginia has fair Mexican and pizza if you know where to look.  The coke, beer and cigs are amazing here, though.

6, I got booted off my high school ski club in 1983 after a trip to Stowe. Before our last day skiing, it dumped like 2+ feet. Before the storm the only trails open were the ones with snowmaking, and that wasn't many. So, for our last run we decided to cut a rope and ski Nose Dive. Little did we know it, but the last guy in our group fell and lost a ski. Our friend didn't get to the bus for another 2 hours, which meant we arrived back in Delaware at 2am instead of  midnight, and no cell phones to notify the waiting parents (oops).
