Video footage of double avalanche a couple days ago

Forums:

This was control work that was done Thursday to intentionally trigger avalanches in known slide paths so as plow crews could safely remove the debris from a natural slide that had closed the road the day before.  A helicopter drops charges higher up in the slide paths in sequence.  In this case, there were two slides next to one another which was cool to see!

I spent some time at the Denali base camp. Avalanches frequently happened around the camp. Three things I'll never forget about them are the wind, the noise, and the tiny ice crystals you breathe in when you are in its wake.

I know nothing first hand about avalanches; thanks for your description, Pete. ... the tiny ice crystals...

That's way cool, Pete, did you get to the summit?  Peter Habler said it's the coldest mountain on earth...

The town proper is perched in between two slide paths, so we never get that close to the actual slides to experience what you've described.

However, I did find this video of the same avalanches from a different location; across the road from the furthest slide.  It's at a house that's off by itself outside of town limits.  You can see the cloud of snow and the person describing the wind.

There's some footage (towards the middle) of the control work taken from the helicopter from about 16 years ago to give a bird's eye view of area / terrain:
