Walking around NYC

Forums:

Love people watching in Time Square, walking around Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center.  I'm getting WiFi and resting at PB Morgan's Irish Pub with a Smithwick's now.

Nice! When are you wandering around West coast?

Enjoy.

Funny, just yesterday someone asked what they should do in the City this weekend. They haven't been in decades.

I told her to spend the day people watching in Times Square, go to Bryant Park, and to do Rockefeller Center.

What could be more glorious?

Central park on a Saturday or Sunday will give you a better mix of locals and tourists.

We went to the Bronx Zoo on Monday, 4/10. I've never seen it so packed. It was 70 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and school vacation. Definitely great people watching, but we were there for the animals.

Of the three days I spent in NYC the one time I was there, by far the best experience I had (other than the two GD shows I saw) was just wandering by myself one day. My friend wanted to shop, so I left her to that and I just started walking, zigzagging around from 34th St. until I found myself at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which I then wandered around in for a couple of hours before walking back to 34th St.

As cool as the museum was, walking through the city was far more entertaining. I wandered through the park for a short time but it seemed allot like other parks I've been in so I went back into the city streets teeming with people, which I found far more interesting. I kept thinking I'll just go one more block as the blocks kept rolling by, and on the way back I kept thinking I'll get a cab, but I just kept walking.

Manhattan is an endlessly amazing concrete jungle.

I'm not much of a travelin' man, but I do hope I'll get back there one day.

The village & environs (little Italy, Chinatown, Wash. Sq, etc) were always fun to wander around back in the day but I'm sure Mike W will tell you it's all gentrified & ruined by Foodies now . . .

So much to see and do!  Maybe One World Trade Center and Central Park tomorrow. The Brassiere Cognac claims fine French food and over 100 varieties of Cognac, has anyone been there?

Any best NY style pizza to try, thin crust?

Hi LLOLLO!  Not sure about the west yet, might be CO in June and CA in August...need to see Phil at TXR so staying flexible waiting for the right excuse to travel.  Last year we did the Spring Fling in May.

Russ and Daughters has a new cafe, down on Orchard St. it's supposed to be a "do not miss." We tried but the wait was too long, so we walked a few blocks up to Katz's. My daughter really wanted the babka French toast.

You can spend a who,e chunk of time down there, strolling Chinatown, Little Italy, SoHo, the Village, etc. There's even a walking mall on Orchard St now.

Slack, you ever been to New York?

Once. Did it change?

I like 'The GingerMan' Beer bar somewhere around 36 & Madison not far from Penn NYC.

Everytime I'm training into Penn for a show or whatever I go there for a zillion Beers on tap. About a 5-8 minute walk from Penn if you don't shuffle.  Comfy couches in the back room.  Mid-day is better as it gets like Office-Party after 5PM.

It's an interesting Midtown stroll.  Interesting storefronts & such.

Slacks w another Lame pic Why Not enjoy China Riders 1st post CHEERS China Rider !

About to take a stroll myself, seeing as how none of the workflow in front of me involves me.

And I'm getting hungry.

Have a blast.

Lots of fun things seen today, I'll post pictures later :-)

I've never been to NYC, so the pics and descriptions of what you're seeing are great. Thanks. I always like these threads.

Overheard in NYC last night.

3 hardhats on a smoke break.

HH1:  You heard about 'dat?

HH2 :  Yeah.  He pulled on an extension cord.  It was attached to a Sawzall up in the ceiling.  Fell out and cracked his head.

HH3:  Stupid fu*k.

Hi Judit - the fearless girl is staring down the bull in the financial district.

Food updates needed. What have you been noshing on?

The chess hustlers...didn't like getting picture taken.

Hi Brian, food pictures later.  Eataly = awesome!

aw man, love visiting nyc and eating my way around.

If I may, and you are in the City tomorrow: Yonah Schimmel's knishes. They are on Houston, just a block from Katz's.

Go to Katz's early for lunch, like 11 am. By noon it will be packed. After lunch make a left out of Katz's and pick up a half dozen knishes and eat them for snacks and dinner. Don't miss out on the kasha knish.

For me, that 2 block radius is heaven: Katz's, Yonah's and Russ and Daughters.

And definitely get a Dr. Brown's soda. The black cherry is my jam, but the old timers still do the Cel Ray, celery soda.

People can argue if New York has the best pizza, Chinese, etc, but when it comes to Jew Food, there's no debate. No place in the world beats New York!

i want a huge bowl of ramen now.

a jew makes damn tasty ramen in the village.

ivan ramen.

fuck it, some katz brisket sandwiches to go as well:)

A kasha knish sounds so good right now. Right now!

I love the bubbles. And the fearless girl.

Ivan Ramen, so amazing to listen to the man when he's on TV; you've partaken, pyramid heat?

Here you go, Judit. They deliver, but it's not cheap. The website is pretty snazzy, considering how much of a home in the wall the store is.

i have, judit.

i thoroughly enjoyed his ramen.

Ivan is the joint. Love that spot. Hit it up last time I was in the village. Next time I'm in the city it will be a pizza date.

Beautiful ramen. I heard that the Zoner daylight was going to be around here, but it doesn't look like he's made it. I always liked his ramen-originator name.

I regret that the knishes will have to wait til I'm local and can choose one or two. There's nothing even close to that in Eugene.

What time were you in Washington Sq. Park?  We walked through there around 130-2.  Was looking in the background of your pictures to see if I might have been in them....lol

You should walk the Highline also.  Sounds like tomorrow is going to be a nice day.  It's a great walk.

Just got back to our hotel pretty tired from today's exploration (and sampling Cognac).  Si Head, we plan to go to highline tomorrow and look forward to better weather.  Too tired to resize pictures and post them now.  Going home tomorrow afternoon.  We were in Washington Square Park a little after you, probably 3ish.

An odd suggestion, but if you find yourself in Penn NYC waiting on the next train, "Roses" has pretty Good pizza slices and many Microbrews on tap.  It's over by the LIRR side.

At Lagurdia now, free wifi with some time to kill before flt home.  The sun is shining, it's a very nice spring day.  This morning we walked highline and then went to The Dakota and Strawberry Fields.  From there we explored a street festival on Columbus Ave.

I love the spice market. Thanks for all of the pictures.

Disco Stu - picture for you, thanks for the recommendation.

For Slacker, yeah this exists too.

Ok, the free wifi ran out.  I'll post more later.

Born & raised in NYC, I tend 2 skip over the tourist areas.

I prefer Riverside Drive & the Hudson River 2 Central Park; but that's just me. smiley

People tend to think of the city as nothing but steel & concrete.  There is more.

Like flower gardens & boat basins on Riverside Drive.

Glad you made it to GingerMan !!

With 30,000 flavors on tap there is something to please everyone. Due to the Midtown location though, it gets pretty office-party in there after 5 PM. Back when Phil was doing the Nokia runs, the place is on the way to the venue from Penn station. 8 dollar Rhinoceros-eyeball stouts are a better investment than 12 dollar Nokia Buds.

You shoulda gone w/ 40,000 headmen
