We are everywhere

Forums:

The other week they played a snippet of "Slipknot!" on the NPR show "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me".

There's a TV show on the NASA channel called "In the Shadow of the Moon".

Back around 1984 I was watching the 700 Club (DON'T ASK ME WHY) and they were playing Sage and Spirit from Blues For Allah as the background music for a story they ran.

That's weird about the 700 Club, but ok.

NPR lately has had a couple of references heard on my daily commute:

Mike Gordon on the wonder of music (feat. No Men in a No Man's Land)

https://www.npr.org/2023/07/25/1190062462/the-wonder-of-music

On the future of Shakedown Street after Dead and Co.  (feat. bunch of Dead songs)

They also ran a story about a guy down in Central America obsessed with saving orphan Ocelots.  Of course, they played Phish.  Couldn't find the link.  Sorry, but still funny to hear Phish's Ocelot on the way to work.

recently binge watched 5 seasons of Handmaid's Tale.

season 4 shows some of the Handmaids celebrating their short lived freedom and   dancing  to Ripple.

poor ocelittles.  always overlooked.

Well, that sounds like a rabbit hole of bleak. You doing okay, Nanc?

it's such a great show and seasons 4 and 5 weren't so depressing.

glad I stuck with it, the writers weave a great storyline.

yeah, I had a few nightmares from watching the series, but it was a nice distraction and a good reminder that reality  could be way worse, even if the show is a good harbinger of what the crazy far right can deliver.

did you happen to catch the recent Simpsons parodying the crazy take over of public school?

I did not. My screen viewing these days is mostly dialed into pure escapism. Parodies of nightmares we're living through right now aren't really doing it for me lately.

>>>>but it was a nice distraction and a good reminder that reality  could be way worse

If you have to watch TV to get this through your noggin', you probably need to get out a little more.

As far as the premise of this thread, until Taylor Swift busts out Uncle John's Band, or Lizzo twerks it out to Shakedown Street, I'm not buying it.

lizzo abuses her dancers ):

we sure are everywhere, tho !

from game of thrones to local sports, many references abound

annnnnnd, don't forget TopGay Andy Cohen and mayer are bff's

>is mostly dialed into pure escapism.

I hear ya, and I understand avoiding the depressing topics but since I was unable to get out much the past few weeks it really was just perfect.

I loved the book and I was really happy to catch up with Handmaids Tale episodes, and it's small comfort, that reality  is  not THAT bad in 'Merica (yet).

And June is such a compelling, resilient rebel that it's hard not to keep rooting for her. I just hope the final season brings some sort of hope for the future  into the plot.

I'm ready for some escapism.. what do you recommend?
Besides Barbie and Oppenheimer. ;)

I was excited to see that the little theater with reclining seats in town is featuring them both. Will be ready to venture out soon and looking forward  to watching both movies.

Our historic movie theater in town recently reopened and is showing some Cary Grant and Hitchcock classics this month. $5 admission, $3 popcorn and live organ music!  Although I'm not sure I'm ready for any Hitchcock at the moment.

I've been catching up on comedy series I missed the first time around, and I'm watching Veep now, which, brings us back to the topic of this thread. Mike McClintock, Selina's communications director, claims in Season 1 that his favorite band is the Grateful Dead.

What's up with the "error" in the thread title?

:-)
