We are using the Erie Canal...

Forums:

...to help make beer.  The tanks should be passing by my town on Monday.  I think it is the first time the Erie Canal has actually been used for commerce in a very long time.

I am not a fan of Genesee beer, but this is cool.

Genny cream ales.

Haven't had one of those in 30 years.

Nice!! 15 miles on the Erie Canal!

Why isn't the canal used for commerce anymore?  The locks look in good shape and the whole process still is in full force throughout Europe...

Yakko Warner owns this tune now.

YMMV

Everything is trucked or transported by train.  The canal is a slow way to go for commerce these days.  The canal is used by pleasure boats, tourists, kayakers, etc.  The locks still have to work to keep the water level, they drain the canal in the winter and fill it back up in the spring.  The elevation at Rome is 420 feet above sea-level :-)

I used to buy Genny Creme Ale when I lived in the hippy house in college 'cause it was the only thing no one else would drink on me, so I always had something to drink when I got home.  I actually found it to be less disagreeable than Bud, Miller, or Coors . . .

As a history buff, the use of the canal is cool. As a beer, the cream ale was the first beer I overdid with Ended up in a pile of mac and cheese face down in the snow in the back yard of my first "cool kids" party.8th grade. They cleaned me up before mom came and picked me up-  DOH.

Two barges with three giant fermentation tanks on each barge.  Each tank holds like 5,000 kegs of beer.   The second barge came by my town today, caught it going through lock 33 after work.

We used to buy Genesee Kegs in college for $23. Worst beer ever......but we drank it anyway.

Genny Bock was $1.62/6 in 1983 or '84. It was passable if you tossed that 12th OZ.

The go-to in that broke-ass period between the end of classes and the start of my summer job.
