West Coast Storms

Forums:

We.'re looking at 8 in. on the ground with another 2 or 3 by morning. It will be down to 20 deg. by morning as well. Heard rumors of a snowplow on our road, but haven't heard it. Even if it shows, that still leaves our 800 ft. driveway, half of it with a 25% grade.

I think we'll be here for a while.

There was 5-6" when I woke up this morning but we had a big melt in the middle of the day, then a lot of snow again. Maybe back to 6" now. The temps are falling to 26˚ overnight and it's supposed to snow til early morning and then take a break til late afternoon. From a forecast of 3-5 days of snow it's now just parts of Monday, with sleet or something for the rest of the week. Cold overnights (25˚) but not crazy cold.

My car is parked around the corner because I live on a Priority 2 street - they threaten to tow if cars are on the street. The goal is to make it easy for plows and emergency vehicles.  I'm cozy and don't need to go anywhere.

I had 81 calendars shipped Fed Ex ground on Tuesday from Fairfield, CA. Usually a 2-3 day delivery. They've made it about 100 miles so far in 5 days to Gold Run, CA. From the looks of things on I-80, I might be lucky to get 'em by New Years. Better the truckers stay safe, but dagnabbit.

I wished the distribution center had shipped them on Dec 9th when their sales boss told me he e-mailed them. That's what I get for being patient and waiting to call to ask WTF?

Good luck with your weather. Here's 30 seconds of the snow squall we got hit with this morning in SLC. https://twitter.com/AlanaBrophyNews/status/1475163944390066178  Lotsa wind and a little snow. More coming tomorrow afternoon.

Snow Squall SLC Dec 26 2021.jpg

Wow, Slickrock, that's some squall!

We've been lucky in SoCal the last week or so and have gotten a couple of inches of rain, and only had a dusting of snow last night. I'm hoping that pattern holds in the week ahead.

Most snow I've seen in Salem since I got here 4 years ago.

Goddamn snow shovel.

2am snow check in Corvallis... another storm coming in tonight, should be fun!

(and for full disclosure, and Judit and I have already covered this, the yardstick is from Eugene Textile Co, 2441Hilyard, long gone but not forgotten!)

(still shameful for a 40+ year Corvallistonianite and OSU grad to have the word "Eugene" on anything)

Highway 395 near mammoth/Yosemite airport.  4 lane highway in summer.

If memory serves, they've got drift fences on both sides of that stretch of the 395. Looks like they didn't work.

Not with 100 mph gusts.  100 miles were closed from Bishop to NV state line yesterday.  Last night they were able to open Bridgeport to walker, and Bishop to mammoth.  Mammoth to Bridgeport still closed.

That's a lot of snow. Best of luck.

It's been 80ish here for a while, ready for some cold. Shit I'm mowing the yard today.

Lake beds are on fire.

A South American weed has taken over lake in the area and drawdowns are the norm.

Donner Summit broke the all time December snow fall total with more than 16 feet so far and still snowing.

Donner Summit camera. Looks windy. Should have my calendars by mid-January.     https://cwwp2.dot.ca.gov/vm/loc/d3/hwy80atdonnersummit.htm

From a friend who lives at about 2,000 feet in the Sierra foothills.

I just got back in from a trip around the property and it is mayhem out there.  A big ole gray pine uprooted and fell over, taking a medium size oak with it. Another big oak down closer to the shipping container uprooted, taking out a few more oaks with it. One of the sequoias that was on our driveway to the right just as you drive in snapped off in the middle and took out the other sequoia next to it - I'm so sad about that. They were two beautiful trees.  Several more oaks uprooted and/or were downed by other falling trees along the year-round stream at the far north of our property.  And there are big branches down everywhere, including on the driveway down to the guest cottage, so it could have hit someone's car if we had guests. And it's warmed up considerably so everything is super slushy which means it's going to be frozen solid overnight.  It's spitting snow...then rain...then snow again.  We still have no power, and if the condition of our property is any indication, then there must be trees and limbs down everywhere. I can't imagine we will get power restored any time soon.

Just AWESOME coolyes

Just saw a plow on Donner Summit and a car going through. Progress!

Sure would be nice to get out of this western drought and have some water in the rivers again. Utah ski resorts are getting blasted. Yee haw!

It sounds like Marin County is getting a lot of rain, filling the lakes and reservoirs. I read someone asking if the lakes and reservoirs couldn't have been dredged while they were so low or empty to provide more room to fill. People are full of ideas.

Really sad about your friend's property, El Nino. That hurts. Hope they have a generator.

And we're back!

15 plus hrs. w/o power. Neighbor's trees fell across the road and across the power lines.

Still have a foot of snow on the ground, and cars have been going into the ditch on the hill. Still have a snowy driveway. Still not going anywhere.

But at least we can cook and clean.

maybe snow by am in SF?

Driven through there many times in that shit- one time if a 22 foot bob tail truck ------  CHAINS  !

Donner Pass is now open and plenty of traffic. I bet those folks are happy. Damn. Poor truckers.

glad ya got power back surf! stay warm

Hi officer! (I think this was on I-5 by Redding).

Slick, I hope you get your calendars soon. Another reason I wouldn't want to be a trucker.

Still Raining, Still Dreaming

Lay back and groove on a rainy day...

>>>>Slick, I hope you get your calendars soon.

Thanks LCL, but I'm keeping it in perspective. While I'm really pissed they didn't ship on the 9th as planned, and it's made the delivery of these gifts a nightmare, and less timely as a Christmas gift, I have a friend in the 6th week of a 3 month chemo regimen who had to go to the hospital to get hydrated twice recently. Her holidays sucked.

And yesterday was the birthday of that Utah firefighter and amazing human that got killed battling the California wildfires a few years ago when Cal Fire screwed up and dropped the load of retardant incorrectly and a tree fell on him. His dad brought the man's son over last week when he delivered a gift. Getting big, and it's so sad Matt's not here.

So considering their situations, and grateful I'm not having to drive that area, I got it pretty good and will just have to wait while I count my blessings.

I remember that tragic firefighter story. Horrible for that kid.

Yes, must keep everything in perspective.

I read yesterday that Tahoe had gotten something like 16' in December. Hopefully, it melts slowly with a perk to set off the drought.

As troubling as the snow may be, it's the best underground water recharge system at work.

Hey Trailhead, funny to see you post as I just bought some Epic Cross Fever at the liquor store and thought of you guys when I saw it.

Yeah, hoping the mountains of Idaho and Colorado get lots so we can float it this summer. I think Utah statewide is now about 114% of normal. We're grateful.

What A Great West Coast December  COLD RAIN and SNOW ! yes

More snow arriving in Portland overnight -- high was only 28 today at 500ft elevation.  At least we got a few hours of blue sky to look at.

Finally made it out of here today and to the store - needed chains to go down the driveway but made it back up without. Had a carport collapse from too much ice and snow. Still waiting for some more of it to melt before we can assess the damage of things stored under the canopy.

Dang Surfdead, best of luck to you. Hope the damage is minimal.

Good luck Surfdead, more snow coming in tonight, but nothing heavy...  then a slow warm up (rains next week)

The Eugene forecast seems to include snow in the morning turning to glop to rain. I moved an appointment from the morning to the afternoon so it would be easy.

Can one of the smart people here, tell us why California can't retain their water?

Its probably fishman

Uh, it's supposed to run off into the ocean after it rains or snows.

More photos

A lot of California has mineral soils that don't retain water, Ras. They're more like a sieve than a sponge.

We got about 6 inches last night.

Hopefully a lot of folks got about 6 inches last night.
