Western Oregon weather

Forums:

It's really slick here. The ice against my front door kept it shut. I boiled some salt water to pour on it so I could get it to open a little and scraped the ice away; I can get out onto the ice now. I'm not going anywhere, but in case of fire I can escape.

Surfdead, did you guys get food? Are you okay? The grocery stores (all the stores) were so crowded yesterday, the one day between the last snow and today's ice.

Stay safe Judit, We might be getting up to 15 inches of rain. The weathermen are predicting rain all week.   We are not going anywhere all weekend. Monday I need to be in SF for a Dr's appointment. Hope the house is still there when we get back. Our neighbor is watching the house so I feel good about that. Oh well this is one of the biggest storm since 2005 with 1997 being the granddaddy of them all.

yikes.... stay warm, this will all get back to 'normal' next week.... its been single digits here at my place...... cant wait for a warm 35 degrees and rain...

Yeah, we made it out yesterday - for the first time this year! White-knuckle ride down the hill, with chains on. Got human and cat food, lunch and a beer at Squirrel's, accumulated mail, etc. Store was extremely crowded  - wife experienced a hit and run to the body by shopping cart lining up for the cashier. Made it back without the chains - had to dodge an oil truck in the ditch and across the road, as well as the giant tow truck trying to get it out. Sleet, freezing rain, and snow so far today - we're "sheltering in place", as per orders from the county. We have plenty of weed but the wax is running out. smiley Haven't turned off the dripping water for 7 days.

Supposed to turn to rain tomorrow as the temp. finally gets above freezing.

Bart did you see my link in the woohoo California thread to the webcam of the Merced river inside Yosemite?  Will be interesting to see on Susnday around 1pm.

you called it a repeat of new year storm 1997.  That's what is shaping up.  They did drop snow level to 9k from 10k I believe and the really amazing thing is that the qpf module still shows 26.4 inches of precipitation for the week.  Generally speaking 10 inches of snow for every inch of precipitation so that's 260 inches of snow! Or 21.5 FEET!!!!!!

Yes I did Rackit, The Truckee River, American River and South Yuba River are all in danger of flooding this week. The snow level right now is at 7000 ft. All the snow we got last week is going to melt. Good Luck everybody be safe and stay dry.

Glad you got out Surfdead.

Really coming down here in the 541

Just starting to get some flurries in P-Town.   My son, who is in town from college, was supposed to fly out this afternoon, but his flight was canceled and rescheduled until tomorrow evening.   Not sure if it was canceled because of local weather or just fallout from the bad weather hitting much of the nation.

That's crazy Surfdead and sorry to hear about your wax shortage.  {{{West Coast Problems}}}

We are waiting for the thaw to be able to finally bury our old chicken, Mimi, who succumbed to the cold and general old age and infirmity two nights ago.

You stay safe, too, Bart.  Everyone stay safe!  Glad you got food, etc., Surfdead. Sorry about the hit to J.

It's switched from the biggest snowflakes I've ever seen to freezing rain and smaller snow. What's the definition of sleet, anyway?

Sorry, Ken.

Stay safe out there!

>>>What's the definition of sleet, anyway?

From the National Weather Service describing the difference between "sleet" and "freezing rain":

"Freezing rain occurs when the layer of freezing air is so thin that the raindrops do not have enough time to freeze before reaching the ground.  Instead, the water freezes on contact with the surface, creating a coating of ice on whatever the raindrops contact.

Sleet is simply frozen raindrops and occurs when the layer of freezing air along the surface is thicker.  This causes the raindrops to freeze before reaching the ground."

In that case, it seems we're having sleet. Maybe with frozen rain, too. The snow was so beautiful as it fell, this just looks like rain falling with a sharper sound on my skylight. Thanks, Ken.
