Community: Recent Catalytic Converter Thefts

Dear Nixle User,

The Berkeley Police Department has noticed an increase in the theft of catalytic converters.  Since July 20th, there have been at least 14 vehicles that have had their catalytic converter stolen throughout the City—mostly occurring during the early morning hours of darkness.  In the majority of those cases, thieves have targeted a Toyota Prius.

It appears that criminals are taking advantage of the lighter weight of the Prius that makes it easier to lift with a vehicle floor jack.  From there, criminals will typically use a small portable reciprocating saw to quickly cut off the catalytic converter.  In a recent online article (see below link), you can see just how quickly these thefts can occur.

In light of this recent trend, the Berkeley Police Department would like to encourage the community to consider the following:

If available, consider parking in your home’s garage.

If parking in your driveway, consider using/adding a motion-sensing light to illuminate your driveway.

If you are parking on the street, consider parking in a well-lit area.

If you see something suspicious (like a person working on the underside of a car in the middle of night along with the sound of a power saw), please report it immediately.

Can't snap off the antennae to smoke crack any more. So, that's nice...

My CC was cut off my Tacoma. It happened in the parking deck at my office. The fuzz said they like 4 wheel drive trucks because they are easy to slide under and go. They also told me don't count on us finding any information. I thought that was reassuring. Atlanta pd at its finest. I went with a cheapo aftermarket converter, the tweakers don't like those because they are not worth as much as the OEM part. The OEM has more precious metal in it and they can trade them in for $75-90.  My building had the car on camera and the plate # was almost readable, but no dice. I ended up replacing the whole line from the headers back, just because my truck was about 15 yrs old at the time.

You can also get these in a high theft area. http://www.catclamp.com/   makes it way less appealing for a quick getaway.  Tweakers...

Some children broke a window on our Civic and wrote N***** on the hood in the dust.

They didn't take anything.

Shame if one of those floor jacks malfunctioned mid-heist.  Or mid-hoist, as it were.
