When did Keith and Donna know they were axed?

Forums:

When did they get wind of when they were to be replaced?

By the end of the decade, though, the rock and road lifestyle had had its way with the Godchauxs: Keith had sunken into drug addiction, the couple's relationship grew volatile and Donna was still struggling to hear herself onstage. "Keith and I, we were wasted," she says. "We were exhausted. And the band was exhausted with us. Keith and I would be getting along but then I'd be mad at him, or blah, blah. . . all that kind of stuff is in the mix. There was all of the abuses — let's call it that — that were involved in everything, and that added to the turmoil. The band knew we had to be out of the band, and Keith and I had been talking about 'How in the world do you quit the Grateful Dead?'" At a group meeting at the Godchaux's house in 1979, everyone came to a mutual decision: It was time for the couple to leave. "It was sad, but it was what needed to happen," she says. "It was turning into being not profitable for anybody. We needed to go, and they needed for us to go."

So those 79 spring shows with Brent were last minute bookings?

They hired him and played with him 2 months later on the fly?

Good decision. Brent brought the funk!

Love for Keith and Donna though.

I'd venture to guess the above mentioned meeting was after the Jan/Feb tour, maybe just before the 2/17/79 show (I seem to remember hearing from veteran west coast folks that it was known at the time that show would be their last).  There were a few shows in Jan/Feb where Donna was absent (I attended Buffalo 1/20/79, she was not present, nor in Detroit the next night, & I think some of the midwest shows in Feb).

i figure it when someone axed them to go...

After 2/17/79. Which was a pretty good show and 3 breakout tunes.

Donna was not on stage at the beginning of one night of a 79 spectrum show, Jerry coaxed her out on stage to sing From the heart of me , she appeared to have a black eye, this was during that tour also  1-5-79

That 2/17/79 show is pretty darn good. Especially Big Railroad Blues till the end. Very dreamy Wheel. Very funky Shakedown.

I think the axing went down like this:make_way_for_el_kabong_by_gagaman.jpg

Keith being strung out and playing like shit, and Donna having an affair with Bobby were the last straws.

From the Bob of me.......

Keith probably got tired of Bobby banging his wife anyways.
