Used to go to 'Bi-Mart' in OR and grab flats full of cull / half-dead or fully-dead plants for free. Then all the orphans would go in a raised bed built on all that nice potting mix. Lots of perlite and time-release in that Jiffy-Mix or whatever nursery stuff.
The next year those beds were ready for strawberries or lettuce or spinach, with the addition of compost and bio-nutrients. Had some good-looking strawberries for a few seasons.
