Oh please it was Zero degrees after my car was warmed up after the JRAD 1.14.18 show.

If I knew it was going to be so balmy, I would have grabbed a ticket.

Its actually supposed to snow a bit & that tamps down the temps, but not that crowd.

Have fun

What’s with the leg humpers, known as JRAD?

Are they now the best GD cover band to see???

Did any one member of JRAD ever see the Grateful Dead live?

Lol - good question.

Zoners wondering who in JRAD saw Jerry:

1. RRG

2. Surfdead

Are they now the best GD cover band to see???

Of course they are.

Of course they are <

What makes them so special?

Low ticket prices?

Good light show?

Good place to pick up a guy or gal 30 years younger??

Convince me why I need to see another corpse humping band.

GTTS ?

It’s all about the music, same as it always is.  GTTS

It’s all about the music < You have nothing to bring to the table but this?

Hope it’s worth a flight.

” Has faith in groups”

>>Hope it’s worth a flight.

yes, well worth it, wouldn’t have done it otherwise, obviously.

I’m curious. That’s why I asked. Not being a wise ass. Just wanted to know what makes JRAD so special??

JRAD has the falsetto tones of T-Ham and a speed of light tempo.

Bob & Co has slow tempos, shatner and mayonnaise vocals and those violent assholes that call themselves rhythm devils.

JRAD is special because they expand upon the musical catalog with a rare and different tune.

Not to mention, the Benevento Russo Duo and Bustle in Your Hedgerow are the biological parents of the band.

I like Joe’s style in the Duo immensely.

I dig T-hams own funky style.

It just seems too rehearsed and flat.

They need something else, besides Oteil.

Just wanted to know what makes JRAD so special??

the improvisations are longer, more creative, and more intense than almost any post jerry band since the Q. there have been a handful of PLF lineups since the Q that can rival them but not many.

if you want to take into account the other aspects of a "dead show" besides the improvisations, there are many better post jerry bands all over the spectrum, but if you are talking just about improvisations and jamming, JRAD is tough to beat.

personally, i dont really care for the slower sections of shows without jerry around. sometimes it works, most of the time it doesnt, and i dont really care about hearing the vast majority of shorter first set songs or ballads. i am there for the jams. if there was no jamming, i would stop going to shows without a second thought.

for most of my dead show going career, i am blown away by parts of shows, mostly improv heavy second sets, but for the most part find myself twiddling my thumbs during the more song based portions, waiting for them to end so they can get to the jams. i have always considered the first set a warm up that is rarely worthwhile outside of the last few songs. occasionally the first set gets jammy or intense, but mostly for me it is a waiting game for set 2.

IME the balls out, high tempo, noisy, insane psychedelic experimental stuff is by far the best part of a show, and JRAD plays in that style the whole time. there is never a point where they cut a jam short or write a setlist without enough big jam vehicles. every song they play jams, every song they play gets weird, almost every song they play achieves significant liftoff, and thats really all i care about at dead shows. if every song is jamming hard and achieving liftoff, i really dont care at all about vocals, ballads, slow and pretty songs, basic "rockers", etc.

for me, JRAD feels like russo was reading my mind at every furthur show, and took notes every time i liked or disliked something, and used those notes as the blueprint for a band. its everything i like about dead shows with everything i dont care about unceremoniously removed.

plus the crowds tend to be better...less wooks, less chatting, more serious music listeners.

personally, my preference for JRAD would be to pull the dead songs back to just 2-4 per night and focus more on songs from all the different members catalogs, plus other covers and maybe some new tunes. them being a GD cover band is more of a unfortunate reality of what sells than something i really enjoy about them. when i see JRAD i dont feel like i am going to a "dead show" or have any desire to hear GD songs, i just want to hear those 5 dudes improvise in an experimental psychedelic rock setting, and unfortunately GD songs are putting the meat in the seats. i could take or leave the whole GD thing with these guys and would really prefer if they dialed it back quite a bit.

Leave it to daylight to give an actual, thoughtful answer.

Dude, you really don't have this zoning thing down yet.

55-65% is jammy goodness. The other 35-45% is smoke break.

i want to go, but I just rushed home from being over there as my car needs to be serviced.

I beat the shit out of it, like Steve Mc Queen in "Bullet".

I am going to smoke a joint and re edit some videos from last year.

HAVE FUN ~

Entire 2nd set was wild!

When I saw red baraat at Garcia’s I thought it would be cool if the stand up drummer jammed with JRAD, it was insanely good when that happened.

Scott Amendola Trio was brilliant tonight in San Francisco in a little book store in Glen Park.

We can't all be in NY.

But the music always carries on.

Just sayin'.

book store on Chenery Street?

Blues for Allah was all over that truckin....super sweet...

>>>book store on Chenery Street<<<

Yes.

Such a groovy little spot.

Music is eternal.

Real music, that is.

Wow - friend/roomie from the 70s - 90s used to live on Chenery just up from there.

Much of 2nd set last night was with guitarist Jonathan Goldberger.

Red Baraat percussion and brass marching through crowd and NFA encore.

Extra day in the city, heading to the Met. yes

blueledboy, how was your first visit to the Cap?  Too bad we didn’t get a chance to say hello.

China we did the Met last time we were in the city, did about 4 hrs.

Decided we need a couple more days (at least) to take it all in.

Yet another reason why we'll be back, hope you had a good one.

Had an excellent time at the Met.  There was a Pacific Northwest Native American exhibit which I stumbled across as I was looking for the Dutch Masters.  Cool stuff!

i will preemptively give slack the benefit of the doubt here, a special symbol on a setlist of a jam with a certain "feel" to it might be getting to be a bit much.

blues for allah is probably my most desired rarity. i was lucky to catch it at furthur fest, but id love to see a band like jrad tackle it and dig in a bit deeper. that and victim or the crime. i would be happy as a pig in shit if they busted out victim.
