Who likes Lynyrd Skynyrd

Forums:

One of the last concerts before the crash. Never saw them live but saw Rossington/Collins Band a few times.

Great show. Seems like John Scher kept his clients satisfied. Never saw a show on YT where where he was promoting where the bands didn't look like they were on good drugs thanks to his connections probably.

Hand raised.  Got a soft spot for ass kicking Southern Rock.

Thanks for sharing.  Cool to see Steve Gaines and Ronnie sharing the vocal leads on "You Got That Right."   Don't think I have seen a video of that before.

Next time I am back in North Florida to see the folks (in December Covid permitting), I will be on a mission to visit the graves of Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Riverside Memorial Park in JAX.   Everyone is there - Ronnie, Billy, Leon, Allen, and even their old high school coach, Leonard Skinner.

Count me in. Skynyrd was bad ass. Their documentary was fairly interesting. I actually caught them play a few times over the years. Certainly not the original lineup, but entertaining.

A fan. Caught the original lineup in Buffalo '76 around the peak of their power. Ronnie Van Zant was drinkin' right out of the bottle and spitting on stage a lot. They hit it hard with electric guitars and some really good songwriting along the way.

What kid our age didn't crank "That Smell" somewhere, sometime?

fuckin' a

Yes indeed.

Our next door neighbor got us into them and the Grateful Dead, which changed my life.

He bought an early '70's Les Paul so he could get that sound, and he did.....

Later in life he had a 2 handicap.....fucker.

RIP TC!!!!!!!!

Anyone who doesn't appreciate Lynyrd Skynyrd doesn't appreciate rock 'n roll.

I never got to see the real band, but I've seen every incarnation since, starting with the first reunion tour with just about everybody alive.

I'll tell you, I know it's hip to be down on the later era LS, and I've seen some duds over the years, but the last time I saw them, in a BIG venue with a BIG sound system, they still rocked the place.

Those great songs, the guitars, the drums, the bass and the live energy were still there, and especially when I heard them play a great version of Simple Man I knew that beyond all the jibber jabber about the REAL band vs. whatever band was playing lately, the music could still bring it right to the souls of your shoes.

And that's rock 'n roll.

Fuck kind'a question is that holmes ?  Caught em many times, before and after crash. Their 3 guitar assault was over fucking whelming powerful joy. Them, The Outlaws, CDB,, fuck man them 3 guitar barrages were just about the best part of my youth. I don't know one person who don't like Skynyrd, if I did they'd be an asshole for sure.

Bad ass band! One the top 10 live albums ever!

I was raised on that sweet stuff.

I saw the real band many times. Saw this entity play medleys.

Not the same.

This

Ronnie and Steve would have written a couple dozen more anthems....

Thanks for posting! Before The Grateful Dead it was all about Lynyrd Skynyrd for me . Great video!

I saw them at Nassau Coliseum on this same tour June 16, 1977 and then had tix to see them at MSG that November a few weeks after the plane went down. That concert still happened but was only Ted Nugent and T Rex. I saw the reunion show in 1987 at Nassau as well w Ed King, Gary Rossington and Alan Collins on guitar. I found that to be a very emotional show. Also seen em 4 or 5 times w Ricky Medlock and Gary Rossington on geetar.

If anyone hasn't seen the 2018 Documentary,

If I Leave Here Tomorrow, it's well worth the watch.

Agreed great documentary with Gary Rossington telling the story from start to finish. Really great footage and worth the time investment for sure especially if you like Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Knebworth 76. They supposedly blew the Stones off the stage. Keef being in his junkie funk makes sense. But Keef could never keep up with this band .

Bummer. Amazon says this movie is not available for viewing in my area. Wtf

I was at that 77 Asbury Park show, I was very lucky to have seen the band 5 times with the original line up, including Ed King, They fuckin kicked ass... I had tickets for the MSG show that never happened, Ticketmaster gave you the choice of a refund or going to see Ted Nuggent, I got a refund. I have the original Street Survivors album with the flames. MCA later recalled the record and reprinted it without the flames around the band... Dime and ez Torrent have tons of old Skynyrd for D/L  mostly all sbd's...Great stuff...Long Live Southern Rock..

Found the graves of Lynyrd Skynyrd at Riverside Memorial Park in Jacksonville today.

Here is Billy Powell's grave.   As the inscription notes:  "He played it pretty":

Leon's grave:

Leon Grave 1-2-21.jpg

Billy's and Leon's graves were placed right across from Ronnie's and his family's plot.   Ronnie was originally buried a little further outside of town, but people kept stealing the headstone and trying to dig up the body so they moved its current location where it seems to be well maintained:

I brought a bottle of Jack Daniels.  Drank some, poured some on all the graves (spit some on Ronnie's), and left the rest of bottle on Ronnie's grave.   I bet the caretaker never has to pay for liquor.

Allen Collins is buried somewhere in that cemetery but it is a simple marker and would have taken all day to find.   High school coach Leonard Skinner is somewhere there too.

Leonard Skinner was also in the song 'Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah' from 1963 (mentioned at 0:42). There was always some debate as to which one was the inspiration for the band name. Seems like it was a composite of both.

Good stuff Ken, thanks!

Yes, some excellent reporting there, Ken!

Saw them twice in 1977 Louisville and Lexington ....Spent my high school years in Louisville KY where I saw so much incredible music in that town.

me

I was always interested in the lyric directed towards Neil Young. Has that been dug into in any interviews that anyone knows of?

Billionyear...it's been asked a billion times.

Great stuff Ken! Don't think I'd drink a bottle left there. Someone might have pissed in it or worse.

It's odd that Allen Collins doesn't have a decent tombstone, being a founding member and the first of the plane-crash survivors to die.

The day the plane went down--or in the pre-internet/cell phone era, we were in high school between classes when word broke and it was a moment I will always remember--we turned on WMMR to listen.  I kick myself because in June of 1977 while I was away at summer camp getting turned on to Hot Tuna and the Dead, back in Philly, at the good ole shitbucket JFK stadium, I missed the show of the summer--Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, J. Geils Band, Dickey Betts.  Then, my chances went down with the plane.  I love me some Skyyard--did see the reconstituted version when they first came back on the Rossignton Collins Band a few times.  When I want some guitar rock n roll, I reach for Second Helping, their first album or Nuthin Fancy

in the documentary Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President, Bob Dylan quotes Simple Man (@ 5:30 in the video):

Simple man is probably my favorite Skynyrd song. Say's it all to my spirit!

Watchin baseball, listening to some holy grail rock. It don't get much better.

Great footage. How cool is that double cut les Paul with the floating tremolo?

I saw them in my high school days back in Louisville in 1977. Great memories.
