Why doesn't Phil Lesh play Red Rocks?

Forums:

One final hurrah?

I'm sure the Cap is great, and all, but it's in Port Chester fer cryin' out loud...

His contract with Shapiro, I'm guessing

plays where Shapiro asks him to?

Great Q.

I'm guessing there's a geographic radius for non-compete. Closest shap-shack is Vegas.

I hear he is busy designing a 25 million dollar house now

busy guy!

Except... I don't think those Hawaii shows were Shapiro shows???

The '07 RR shoe wasn't very well attended, as I recall. That was a split run with the first night @ the Fillmore.

I believe that's the last time Phil brought one of his Friends lineups to Red Rocks.

I'd like to see PLF play there again. I bet it would draw well.

I think that was in late September, Mark. 3 sets, full moon, blah blah.

Yes, it could sell well, especially with the right opener(s).

Why do people keep asking this type of question?

Phil is retired from the business of music.

If a promoter was willing to do ALL the work setting up the shows, the band, the logistics and everything else that goes into putting on shows, and then paid Phil an acceptable sum of money to show up a day before the shows I bet he would play one-offs at Red Rocks, or just about anywhere else.

But the Live Nation's and AEG's of the world don't do that type of thing. Only one promoter has thought of and is willing to do all of that work for an individual artist.

I think it's pretty clear that if it wasn't for Peter Shapiro Phil would only be playing at his little place in San Rafael, and I believe he would be fully content with that.

>> Why do people keep asking this type of question?

Well, this is a discussion board, after all.

The reason I ask the question is because Red Rocks is a musical vortex that bands seek out. This ain't some random shed.

No, Phil isn't touring, but he is playing one-off weekends in NY, Hawaii, etc. So, it is plausible, and worthy of discussion.

Heck, even Shappy could act as promoter. I'm OK with the Shapster.

  Beautiful night. Impressive moon indeed.

Great Dark Star that night^

The Shapster could easily lease Red Rocks and put on some shoes.

just go see sci and panic and shut up.

i wANT the PhiLS LEESH bandzz

No RR for DeadCo last year or this coming run as well.

Probably the best musically I saw from that lineup when it excluded Sless. Midnight Rider was great. The feeling of being there is one I won't forget.

$$$ is filling Folsom. Twice.

>>> i wANT the PhiLS LEESH bandzz

PLayy teh FUCKINGGF Red RoxxXx Phill!!!!!!1111112

Jay & Co. could pull this off, Mark.

Even better, why hasn't he played Horning's Hideout, huh Phil? Shappy could easily book that, too.

I'm OK with the Shapster.<<<

Not sure I'd say I'm "OK" with him, but I'd readily hold my nose if he were involved with a Phil Red Rocks one-off/run.

However, as others have alluded to ... I don't believe Phil is pro-actively seeking to "tour" (outside his established residencies) at this stage of the game, which I'm OK with.

In reality, I think the trick would be getting enough firepower on the stage to insure a sell out and at the same time making room for Graham.

>>>Jay & Co. could pull this off, Mark

Maybe. He tried with Weir about 10-11 years ago, but the big dogs beat him pretty badly.

That ended up being the Ratdog shoe at the Fillmore, if you remember that gem.

I remember some old Quixotes gig at Red Rocks with the Rads. Probably circa 2002-3? Back when Quixotes was on Broadway.

Maybe a 1/4 full.

We should get Lance to start a petition.

Yup, "Quixote's on the Rocks".

Good times.

Because he doesn't want to.

Phil can pretty much do what he pleases at this point.

>> Because he doesn't want to. <<

Have you asked him, Thom?

I'd guess he'd love to play RR one more time. I will ask the next time I see him.

clearly they are concerned that too many Phil bombs will crumble the joint.

Why doesn't Red Rocks tour?

Five Nights at Red Rocks are ALREADY CONFIRMED

Anyone remember that?

Too many stairs

JRAD w/ MMW April 29 at RR !!!

I'd love to go to that!

Furthur was there in 12 and 13. Steal your face night was pretty cool

And why doesn't Phil Lesh play the Berkeley Greek?

Agreed, rolando.

I like hearing Phil Lesh on a loud PA system.

Yeah, I made that comment elsewhere, Ned. It's certainly fun to see him at little ol' TXR, but I miss seeing (hearing) him in a bigger venue.

That was my grip with TXR...subtle sound.

I want my hair to move.

You Realize Being 77 Years Old is Close to 80 Freaking Years Old ! Give The Guy A Freaking Break !!

{{{ PHIL }}}

Nobody is asking Phil to embark on a 160 date tour schedule, Rob.

Just a show or two at the most iconic outdoor venue on planet Earth. Is that too much to ask?

^it is not. phil should definitely melt RR down again.

just be sure to add sless and molo.

If he hadn't played in NYC last weekend, and just announced another weekend in May, you might have a point, plf. But, you don't.

YEAH, PLF, PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT!!!!!

Just a show or two at the most iconic outdoor venue on planet Earth<<<

OK St Mark i'll agree !

PHIL RED ROCKS !

just be sure to add sless and molo.  <<<<<

WOOHOO !

I vote for Phil at Red Rocks with Warren/Sless/Molo, and maybe Mule and/or Tedeschi-Trucks opening.

yeah it's time for a Phil and Warren reunion !  Send It To The Stars !...........

> YEAH, PLF, PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT!!!!!

And pass it over here once you've had yourself a fat toke.

I caught the 2001 Q run at RR and that was one of the best musical experiences of my life, so I'd love to see Phil play there again if he deems it desirable. In the meantime, i've got tickets for the TTB RR run this summer at the end of July and I'm looking forward to meeting some Colorado zoners while I'm out there.

all of you.....

go to your rooms.

i haz Is Haz Kindz Budz  Yay jon jon

>>I caught the 2001 Q run at RR and that was one of the best musical experiences of my life

me too

Then you know the driving rain and crazy lightning the second night was just exactly perfect, Gravy. Good times.

Epic. I call it the "Phil controls the weather" show. I sat next to some guy who was handing out doses all night long, seeking what he was calling "primal form" for himself and the whole crowd--wild night.

I think the Q shouldn't play

i saw them last year, it was meh.

They had a good run.

I had a better time with Krasno and co

2001 was something else, and I don't think they could play like that again without a tour really.

Phil is 77, incredible

Phil does not like all those tarp shenanigans.

Fact!

Let's just blame it on these guys.

Night One:

1 Set Phil

2 Sets JRAD

Night Two:

1 Set JRAD

2 Sets Phil

Red Rocks is too big (9000+ I think) for Phil's current lineups.  I went to the Labor Day weekend Q shows in '02 & they sold fairly well & had opening acts that drew some folks too (Ratdog/Willie Nelson).  Altitude issues may also be a factor for Phil at his age, if you listen to recordings of a lot of the Denver area GD shows back in the day, Jerry's voice was usually extra raspy during/immediately following those hi altitude shows.  To be in truly tip top performance mode the band should be there @ least a few days early to "acclimate".  More potential logistics issues.

Phil needs to bring his friends to Chicago. Other than FTW, it's been awhile.

I agree, but still think he'd easily sell over half the venue with any lineup & would come close to selling out entirely with most ... there's just that big a demand in Colorado alone.

However, a promoter might want to see a lineup such as the Q or something of that "caliber" to take such a risk.

That's what I'm saying enough with the no touring thing and I am not saying go do major tours but why not do red rocks...Oregon..and some of the other classics

>>>but why not do red rocks...Oregon..and some of the other classics<<<

swinginlikekingman_4.jpg

Ya'll just keep swingin' at the same pitch.

A PROMOTER NEEDS TO SET IT UP!!!

So get busy all you talkers, and SET IT ALL UP!!!

And Phil will do what you want.

Otherwise, thank you Shapiro, and what's next at TxR?

While I can't say for sure from first hand info, I'm sure the answer is twofold. First, Mr. Lesh has made it clear that his days of touring are done. One offs at different venues, especially ones the size of Red Rocks, add a lot of costs and production logistics. All the venues Lesh plays now have a sound system provided by either himself or Shapiro, probably to spec. Same with the lighting. Those are huge costs. To play Red Rocks and some of the other venues, especially now that Phil's popularity has ebbed, would demand near or full sell outs of the venues to become profitable. I don't think any lineup, including the Q, would sell enough tickets to make it worth it.

It seems to me that Phil just wants to plug in a play with the minimum of hassle. It appears to be working for him; so why change?

Red rocks - 9000+ audience members

Folsom field - 48000 Audience members

----------------------------------------------------------------

Phil attendance for CO shows started to drop off in mid 2000's and he was not selling out venues. With Dead and CO playing folsom field in june this year not sure what the interest in Phil would be. I would be surprised if he came back ned...

Phil likes sleeping in his own bed.

Because Phil is a coastal elite and he will not bothered with flyover states?

I agree with your premise skifurthur, but not necessarily your estimated outcome.   Having not missed a show that either Phil or Bobby has played in Colorado for the past 10 years and also having seen a gazillion SCI, Phish, Panic, etc. shows in Colorado, I believe that people definitely "come out of the woodwork" for anything GD related.  I'm talking both locally (front range) as well as regionally (mountains, UT, AZ, etc.).    I  believe this would be the foundation that could carry the vast majority, if not all of draw, to sell out.  I would grant you that there might not big a hoard who might make it a destination trip ... however a double with Bobby project other than D&C would probably seal the deal for a 2-3 day run.  Likewise, a different, yet carefully thought out co-bill could provide enough support to make the risk go down substantially.

But as you stated Phil's semi-retirement makes it a moot point ... especially in that there is a significant hurdle of risk (regardless of how big the actual hurdle might be).

what about the ogden or fillmore?

phil would definitely sell them out, with the proper band. add DNB.

Saw some great PLQ there in 2001/2002 - very good times.

Bozeman in spring 2002 was a blast also.

Not much for me after that- pretty much done with it.

Lance needs to get outta Cali and check out the Rocks

(((((( some guy who was handing out doses all night long ))))))

derp

not good venues, ned?

Not Vortexes.

ah, i hear ya.

god colorado is annoying...

Hi Turtle.

You mad, bro?

Didn't you have an epic camping trip in Colorado with Nick, Turtle?

we were on dso tour...

hurt my back.hip last night nedley..a lil cranky.

Hope you're OK, turts. I've had some nasty back issues lately. Going to the doc Monday to get all xray'd up and shit.

Have you guys ever tried cupping therapy?

Had it done in Maui a few years back and it definitely made a difference. DeMarcus Ware was a big proponent.

I would cup with Turtle like Nick did.

i've had cupping but for colds/flu

hope you feel better nedb

>>>>>I would cup with Turtle like Nick did.

That was spooning, not cupping.

They're very similar. Cupping is next level shit.

You mugs are just forking around now. Well done.
