If a promoter was willing to do ALL the work setting up the shows, the band, the logistics and everything else that goes into putting on shows, and then paid Phil an acceptable sum of money to show up a day before the shows I bet he would play one-offs at Red Rocks, or just about anywhere else.
But the Live Nation's and AEG's of the world don't do that type of thing. Only one promoter has thought of and is willing to do all of that work for an individual artist.
I think it's pretty clear that if it wasn't for Peter Shapiro Phil would only be playing at his little place in San Rafael, and I believe he would be fully content with that.
Not sure I'd say I'm "OK" with him, but I'd readily hold my nose if he were involved with a Phil Red Rocks one-off/run.
However, as others have alluded to ... I don't believe Phil is pro-actively seeking to "tour" (outside his established residencies) at this stage of the game, which I'm OK with.
In reality, I think the trick would be getting enough firepower on the stage to insure a sell out and at the same time making room for Graham.
> YEAH, PLF, PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT!!!!!
And pass it over here once you've had yourself a fat toke.
I caught the 2001 Q run at RR and that was one of the best musical experiences of my life, so I'd love to see Phil play there again if he deems it desirable. In the meantime, i've got tickets for the TTB RR run this summer at the end of July and I'm looking forward to meeting some Colorado zoners while I'm out there.
Epic. I call it the "Phil controls the weather" show. I sat next to some guy who was handing out doses all night long, seeking what he was calling "primal form" for himself and the whole crowd--wild night.
Red Rocks is too big (9000+ I think) for Phil's current lineups. I went to the Labor Day weekend Q shows in '02 & they sold fairly well & had opening acts that drew some folks too (Ratdog/Willie Nelson). Altitude issues may also be a factor for Phil at his age, if you listen to recordings of a lot of the Denver area GD shows back in the day, Jerry's voice was usually extra raspy during/immediately following those hi altitude shows. To be in truly tip top performance mode the band should be there @ least a few days early to "acclimate". More potential logistics issues.
Red Rocks is too big (9000+ I think) for Phil's current lineups.<<<
I agree, but still think he'd easily sell over half the venue with any lineup & would come close to selling out entirely with most ... there's just that big a demand in Colorado alone.
However, a promoter might want to see a lineup such as the Q or something of that "caliber" to take such a risk.
That's what I'm saying enough with the no touring thing and I am not saying go do major tours but why not do red rocks...Oregon..and some of the other classics
While I can't say for sure from first hand info, I'm sure the answer is twofold. First, Mr. Lesh has made it clear that his days of touring are done. One offs at different venues, especially ones the size of Red Rocks, add a lot of costs and production logistics. All the venues Lesh plays now have a sound system provided by either himself or Shapiro, probably to spec. Same with the lighting. Those are huge costs. To play Red Rocks and some of the other venues, especially now that Phil's popularity has ebbed, would demand near or full sell outs of the venues to become profitable. I don't think any lineup, including the Q, would sell enough tickets to make it worth it.
It seems to me that Phil just wants to plug in a play with the minimum of hassle. It appears to be working for him; so why change?

I agree with your premise skifurthur, but not necessarily your estimated outcome. Having not missed a show that either Phil or Bobby has played in Colorado for the past 10 years and also having seen a gazillion SCI, Phish, Panic, etc. shows in Colorado, I believe that people definitely "come out of the woodwork" for anything GD related. I'm talking both locally (front range) as well as regionally (mountains, UT, AZ, etc.). I believe this would be the foundation that could carry the vast majority, if not all of draw, to sell out. I would grant you that there might not big a hoard who might make it a destination trip ... however a double with Bobby project other than D&C would probably seal the deal for a 2-3 day run. Likewise, a different, yet carefully thought out co-bill could provide enough support to make the risk go down substantially.
But as you stated Phil's semi-retirement makes it a moot point ... especially in that there is a significant hurdle of risk (regardless of how big the actual hurdle might be).

Why do people keep asking this type of question?
Phil is retired from the business of music.
If a promoter was willing to do ALL the work setting up the shows, the band, the logistics and everything else that goes into putting on shows, and then paid Phil an acceptable sum of money to show up a day before the shows I bet he would play one-offs at Red Rocks, or just about anywhere else.

Well, this is a discussion board, after all.
The reason I ask the question is because Red Rocks is a musical vortex that bands seek out. This ain't some random shed.
No, Phil isn't touring, but he is playing one-off weekends in NY, Hawaii, etc. So, it is plausible, and worthy of discussion.
Heck, even Shappy could act as promoter. I'm OK with the Shapster.
