There was a time not long ago when if something like this happened to someone, it would come attached with a healthy amount of shame and not really something you'd promote. With the rise of social media and perhaps other factors, certain individuals now attempt to use it to their advantage. A regular championship of victimhood that can be worn as red badge of courage. Maybe even pick up an extra million followers or two.
And you (yes you!) can also raise your hand in support of these victims to help craft your own digital identity and maybe feel a little better about yourself along the way. This is what politicians and Hollywood celebrities currently have most in common. It's shared ground by the left the right. Disturbing but fascinating.
And there are certainly lines that can be drawn to the Ryan Adams situation. He was mean to me...said my voice wasn't an instrument... I would be more successful if it wasn't for him....I'm a victim...won't you support me? Not to single out Mandy specifically as there are bazillion other case studies.
To answer the thread subject, I don't think he can confess. The lie was so bizarrely outrageous and then he doubled down big-time with over the top righteous indignation. Great acting but poor attention to casting and script development. How can he do anything but go full Trump at this point and just repeat the lies over the over and over and over. There are dummy sycophants who believe anything that backs up their world view. His best strategy is to just play to those people.

Had you ever heard of Jussie Smollett before the alleged January 29 attack?
Do you think it likely that fans of President Trump had?
Smollett has said that his public anti-Trump statements were the likely reason for the attack. Is it really true that he was an especially prominent anti-Trump voice?
Did you think it strange that Smollett or his representatives were, from the beginning, telling TMZ a different story than they told the police? He or his representatives told TMZ the attackers yelled, “This is MAGA country.” This was news to the police.
Related to (4), don’t you think that if Smollett’s supposed attackers had yelled, “This is MAGA country,” he would have told the police in his initial interview with them, right after the alleged assault?
How did Trump-loving racist homophobes know that Smollett would be at a Subway sandwich shop at 2 a.m.? Smollett has said going to the Subway was a spur-of-the-moment decision.
It was extremely cold in Chicago the night of January 29. Assuming Trump-loving racist homophobes wanted to track down and attack Smollett, and maybe knew where he lived, as the shop was close to his apartment, wouldn’t they have waited for more agreeable weather?
How likely do you think it is that attackers would shout, “This is MAGA country” in Chicago, a place that no one thinks is MAGA country?
If Smollett’s supposed attackers did not know he was going to be at that exact spot at that exact moment and would have been willing to attack any random gay and/or black man in Chicago, how difficult would it have been for them to find a gay and/or black man to assault without going to the trouble of a 2 a.m. attack on a frigid night? Couldn’t they have just waited outside a gay bar on a summer night?
Don’t you think for the attackers to have yelled a racist slur as well as a homophobic slur as well as having a bottle of bleach as well as having a noose sounds a bit overdetermined, like bad television writing?
Smollett supposedly received a viciously nasty letter threatening him with lynching a week before the alleged assault. Is it likely that either two separate racist parties wanted to attack him at essentially the same time or else the January 29 attackers would telegraph their intentions with a letter?
Don’t you think it strange that Smollett had a phone with him, yet didn’t call the police on that phone to inform them what had happened and which way his attackers had fled?
Don’t you think it strange that his attackers fled without much harming Smollett or robbing him?
Related to (13), did it not occur to you that the whole alleged attack looked a bit like the criminal equivalent of a press release, meant to send a message rather than accomplish anything?
If you were beaten up, would you somehow remember to pick up your Subway purchase afterward?
If you were subjected to a vicious, racist, homophobic, life-altering attack that included a hint of lynching, would you really leave the rope draped around your neck and calmly walk, not run, home?
Would you then walk past the security desk at your apartment building without telling anyone what had happened?
Would you wait 40 minutes before informing the police what had happened?
Smollett said he kept the rope around his neck to preserve evidence for the police. Yet in the police report filed on the night in question, he was quoted as saying he was reluctant to make a police report at all. Why would he preserve evidence to bolster a report he didn’t intend to make?
Why, as an outspoken gay black man with a long history of casting aspersions on Trump, would he not immediately file a police report about an incident that seemingly confirmed his worst fears?
If you were beating up somebody who was on his phone, would you maybe take the phone away from him so as to eliminate the possibility of a witness overhearing what you were doing?
Have you noticed that alleged Trump-related hate crimes seem to have a tendency to turn out to be fiction?
Did you think it odd that Smollett refused to give police his phone?
Did you think it odd that Smollett didn’t give police his phone records for two weeks, and when he did, they were heavily redacted, as though he might be hiding something?
Chicago reporters on the case began relaying that their sources in the police department were skeptical about Smollett’s claims soon after the alleged assault. Did you not notice?
Did you take away any lessons from Covington?
If not, why?

But anyone who had asked these questions at the time of the attack, perfectly reasonable questions to ask given the circumstances, would have been accused of being a racist homophobe. I haven't been following this story closely and had never heard of this guy beforehand but given that hate crimes spiked in America after Trump was elected, there's no reason to doubt his story INITIALLY. Sure it was strange someone would attack him (a Hollywood actor) in the middle of the night and go all KKK in the city of Chicago. This is hardly the first time someone has faked a crime, but it's rare that people do and they are risking a lot in doing so. We also live in a surveillance society and it is easier to catch people when they lie.
The only person who needs to apologize is Smollet himself. Dude just ruined his career and reputation and no doubt his actions will now call into question actual attacks which will no doubt occur in the future in this incredibly fucked up political climate in which we find ourselves, especially in places where the police are less inclined to believe people of color, women and LGBTQ folks.

I laugh at all the right wing people who are acting like there was something wrong or fishy in believing the guy when he first reported the crime and said "Wow, that's terrible!", you know like President Trump said.
The way I see it there are two ways to play it at this point. One is to go to his grave proclaiming his innocence to that very small segment of people who will believe that this is all a Big White Media Conspiracy. Or, he can go on The View and confess that he suffered from mental health and substance abuse conditions but he went to rehab and has now dedicated his life to God so everyone should forgive him and buy his album. Time will tell I guess.

I admit though that I didn’t initially doubt the attack happened and felt more relief that he survived..and yet it didn’t make sense. With all of the MAGA white Supremacists and a rise in hate crimes, it was easy to believe that 2 MAGA racists would Lynch a gay black man. This particular incident should have been viewed with more skepticism from the get go, by us all - but we’re in such a polarized time that it just seemed, unfortunately, all to easy to believe the story. and then an actual MAGA terrorist with a hit list straight from Trump’s mouth is discovered with a cache of weapons.

I did think that 16 felony
I did think that 16 felony charges seemed a bit excessive, but was not expecting this. However, it is so rare that people get charged for making false police reports I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'm still OK with him being fried in the court of public opinion. That said, I think it is pretty common to accept at face value when someone claims they were victims of a crime. It's on him, not the people who believed or reported his allegations.
