Windoze / PC question...

Forums:

OK,

I could put this in techie talk folder, but it's slower over there.

The other day I updated two softwares: Opera browser & Exact Audio Copy. Now the usual softwares (EAC, VLC, Windows Media Player) won't acknowledge a CD or DVD in the drive.

How do I repair that?

Thanks in advance.

>> won't acknowledge a CD or DVD

What does this mean? The program doesn't auto load when you insert a disc or you can't navigate to the disc's content after inserting it?

1 I doubt you know even know how to use EAC

2 throw that shit out the window

"... you can't navigate to the disc's content after inserting it..."

That is the situation.

EAC tells me "No audio CD in Drive".

VLC Media player acts like there is no disc present.

I'd suspect a physically faulty drive, but I just changed two things: EAC & Opera updates.

So I suspect a software issue.

Disc snubbing....

Have you tried multiple discs?

Thanks Ender,

I will look at that link. It isn't solely an EAC problem, but perhaps I need to re-configure it after installing the more modern version.

Or I could tell 'Windoze 7'  to revert to an earlier state.

But I might lose valuable Dog photos crying

Honestly. Just uninstall eac then I would disconnect and then reconnect the drive.

Well,

Whatever strange thing happened, I got it fixed.

The actual 'Windoze Troubleshooting' routine searched for a missing driver, could not locate said driver, but the DVD-RW drive is now awake.

So that's much better.

Thanks Heybro,

I'll look at that tutorial. I've read several, and have used EAC since early 2000's. My reason for upgrading was the belief that older version did not properly rip HDCD format. Other than that, old version was running fine. My only wish has always been for someone to port EAC to Mac platform, but oh well...

So it was some obscure Driver issue, and the Opera upgrade could have done it, or the EAC upgrade.  I blame China (they bought Opera a while back).

Download XLD for Mac, Stu.  Does all that EAC does.

No one even talks about HDCDs anymore. I don't think they even utilize the extra bits on everyone made. It's like Betamax or something so I guess it's right up your alley.

There was just a discussion here on VLZ regarding the HDCD format last few weeks.  One Zoner acquired a new CD player with that feature for his/her home audio rack.  It's just a wee bit more dynamic range or difference in dB between soft and loud passages. Another zoner explained that it's a Micro$oft licensed tech so Windoze Media Player can decode it (HDCD).

But hey if I'm ripping backups of my old Dick's Picks, I certainly want to extract that info.

Anyway thanks all for the tech tips.  I was not aware of 'XLD' but upon reading about  it, seems like 'Traders Little Helper' for Mac OSX.

Yo, Spliffenstein!
