We've had a series of thefts in recent weeks and are considering installing security cameras in the driveway and front door. Any DIY recommendations/pointers appreciated before we dive in!
I bought it when on sale.in December 2018 >> ironically (or sadly) it was extremely valuable just one week later :-(
dogs that bark are also a decent deterrent
porch pirates are out of control in our city
covid economics and everything being delivered is a huge cultural change as well
seems to be more crime, more criminals being more bold, and and definitely there are way more folks complaining about crime (and everything else under the sun as well) on "next door"
My neighbors have some kind of camera system and TTB eh were able to look back and see who parked in front of our garage. It turned out to be my neighbor down the street parking his girlfriends car. The guy is just an asshole and always causing issues in the neighborhood but at least I was able to tell him if he doesn't move I'm going get his car towed
I would consider one of the ring cameras that work in conjunction with a flood light. May cover both points possibly. They also have the front doorbell camera but the view is limited
the advantage with the flood light camera is that when there is light, motion detection floodlight coming on, you will get a better picture instead of (black/white night vision). The action of the light turning on is also a deterrent
a lil more expensive and a small monthly. I am not sure if there are similar products without the monthly fee, you can research if you want
I don't blame you for the ounce of prevention, Pete! Trespassing and theft have gotten ridiculous in the last four years. Hopefully the added security is an effective deterrent.
Thanks guys! Have any of you been ripped off since installing security cameras?
I haven't been ripped off but once when I was in the Florida Keys I got an alert on one of my Ring cameras and saw some guy wearing knee pads creeping around my house at night. I called my neighbor and he confronted the guy on the side of my house. The guy took off saying something about a lost dog. Fucking river rat.
Someone mentioned Arlo system, I saw the 2 - Camera + base station on clearance at Home Despot the other day, $100.00 or so down from $395.00 or something like that. The spare cameras are marked down to $50.00 each. Arlo Pro II. So for about $200 you could have a four - camera setup. Actually it would make more sense to buy 2 of the (base station + 2 - camera) sets.
I read the reviews, considering getting a system for the Barns, been some break-ins going on around here. Of course, a clever thief will steal the security system as well. But it sends the video to "The Cloud" so you might have a record of the thief.
So your local Home Despot might or might not have those on clearance. It's the older version with 1080 resolution and the night vision is black & white. Newer, more expensive version has higher resolution video, wider camera angle, color night vision.
Reading the various reviews of Arlo setup, I like that you can add a USB drive to store video. The old version (Pro II) comes with Free 7-day Cloud storage of video. Also 2-way audio so you can communicate with the event on Camera -- "Hello leave the UPS package there" or "Don't break in to the shed, Rhinoceroses breed there".
However, I'm not certain if it will function without a dedicated internet connection. I'm actually going to call the custy service # and ask if it will record video onto USB drive without the presence of Interweb connection.

Thefts and property crime are non violent offenses. What good is a camera going to do? California no longer prosecutes non violent crime.
