Jerry Garcia used a number of guitars over the course of his illustrious career, but one of the instruments with which he’s most connected was named “Wolf.” The guitar was built by luthier Doug Irwin and delivered to Garcia in 1973. He used the axe for large portions of the ’70s and now Glide Magazine reports that the guitar will soon be put up for auction with proceeds to go to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Glide’s article includes word the current owner of Wolf, who bought the guitar through a 2002 Guernsey’s auction for $700K, will auction Wolf off at a Guernsey’s event to be held at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on March 14. “Every penny of the amount bid on this extraordinary instrument will go to SPLC.” The current owner said, “I’ve been a fan of The Dead since I was a kid, and playing this iconic guitar over the past 15 years has been a privilege. But the time is right for Wolf to do some good. My wife and I have long supported the efforts of the Southern Poverty Law Center, and if ever we needed the SPLC, we sure do need them now.”

Jerry Garcia first used Wolf on September 5, 1973 as part of a Garcia & Saunders gig at a private party held for the Hell’s Angels. Garcia used the guitar through the first half of 1975 and then again full-time in the fall of 1977 through the summer of 1979 as per Relix. Wolf came out of retirement in 1989 when Garcia started to experiment with MIDI synthesizers and was last thought to be played by Jerry with the Dead on February 23, 1993. Since his passing, the guitar has been used by a number of musicians in a number of settings over the years including by Warren Haynes for many Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration performances.

Those interested in bidding on the Wolf, or attending the auction and preview events should visit www.guernseys.com or contact the auction house in New York at 212-794-2280.

I'm pretty sure the current owner is Daniel Pritzker.
Pritzker was the founder, guitarist and songwriter for the Chicago band Sonia Dada.

From Wikipedia:
The Pritzker family is an American Jewish family engaged in entrepreneurship and philanthropy, and one of the wealthiest families in the United States of America, being near the top of Forbes magazine's "America's Richest Families" list since the magazine began listings in 1982.

The family is most famous for owning the Hyatt hotel chain, and the Marmon Group, conglomerate of manufacturing and industrial service companies which has since been sold to Berkshire Hathaway.
Other holdings have included the Superior Bank of Chicago, which notably collapsed in 2001, the TransUnion credit bureau and the Royal Caribbean cruise line.

Who actually ones it now?

henry Kaiser?

Daniel Pritzker as stated above.

Proud to say I was there.

Jeff G was conceived there.

Can Phil and all his Friends chip in so it doesn't go to Irsay?

Thats kinda cool that he is giving it (proceeds) to charity. I gather he doesnt need the money so he must care bout the SPLC.  Anyone know of a good list off the top of your head of what guitar he played on specific shows? I'd like to see what shows I heard wolf.  thanks for link about the guitar

I believe other than the Travis Bean Era from '74 -'75 Wolf was used '73 till Garcia got his first Irwin in '79.

Wolf briefly came out of retirement in 1988 as a guinea pig for MIDI synthesizer experiments. (I was at the Oakland shows and other West Coast shows.)

That's awesome Shuffle,  must've been a hell of a party!

From the other thread...

Maybe Warren will want to buy it.

It will go for over $1,000,000, so I very much doubt Warren would be interested.

Maybe Irsay will get it, but if he really wanted it he could have bought it when he bought Tiger.

> I believe other than the Travis Bean Era from '74 -'75 Wolf was used '73 till Garcia got his first Irwin in '79.<

Wolf *was* Jerry's first Irwin.

Jerry played the Bean all through '76 and '77 before switching back to Wolf in '78.

Warren has played Wolf more than any other person besides Jerry.

^^He was playing Wolf at the end of '77.

It belongs at TXR as a house instrument, come on Phil pony up...

please don't phil. the last thing i want to see is Grahame or Ross James making faces while playing it.

True, at the end of the year. I know he played the Travis Bean through Englishtown!

Lol JR

What guitar did he play in May 77?

Bean.

"The Enemy Is Listening"

I hope John Mayer buys it.

lol.

Colts owner dude is one bid away from owning tiger and wolf. Sad.

Andrew Olson, who modded a couple of guitars for me, has built two copies of Wolf for Daniel using the original as a template.

To give up the original to benefit SPLC is a wonderful gesture.

Got to keep Morris Dees in those Rolls Royces.

I'm pretty sure that Jerry plays Wolf in the Grateful Dead Movie [10/74]. I'm not sure why this article wouldn't note that  time period. [Best GD live ever!!]
