X-mas Food Traditions

Forums:

What are the food traditions in your family?

From a sociological perspective, I find it fascinating. It's at Christmas that I realize the the US is not a melting pot, but rather a stew pot. So many retain food traditions from the old country, even if it has been generations since relatives came over.

What are the the foods that you all grew up with?

Tamales

On xmas eve or xmas day?

Eve. My mom's family did turkey and ham. Her mom was embarrassed about being Mexican.

Roasted Pork Shoulder (Pernil Al Horno) with Aroz Con Gandules (Yellow rice with Pigeon Peas).

X-MAS day my Mom (rip) used to make it, now I'm the cook for that meal.

xmas eve corn & beef tamales > midnight mass Mom > home more drinks till   ?

Kielbasa and Pierogies on Christmas Eve has been our tradition carried on from my mom's Polish/Ukrainian heritage.  When I was much younger, I recall many of the traditional things - turkey, ham, Beef Wellington one year, etc.  Then my mom started doing international themed dinners many years ago.  They would usually include 4-5 main dishes and a variety of sides and desserts.  Past celebrations included German, Polish/Slavic, Greek, Italian, Spanish, and Caribbean to name a few.  It all ended about ten years ago when my parents started wintering down south.  It is over for good though this year as we go through our first Christmas season without our mom, having lost her in July.

Christmas morning we do something called Rice Mush or Tomptagrït (or something like that in Swedish).

Lingonberries are cool.

Prime rib, bone in, if you like beef

Chinese food

Christmas Eve Rouladen

Christmas day Schnitzle

Ham biscuits on xmas day.

Nice, Bluest.

Our family ate Dungeness crab dipped in garlic butter or mayo, crisp green salad and hot sourdough bread. And more crab.

We had latkes with applesauce and sour cream on the first night of Chanukah.

Awesome to see those Old World traditions being passed down.

Anyone here of Polish descent, who still does the 11 types of fish on Christmas Eve?

Growing up it was a traditional ham dinner with all the fixings. Now that I have my own family we switch it up now and then but still go back to the Ham every once in a while.

Christmas eve....roasted pig.....whole.....My In laws are Cuban and I embraced that tradition. Her sons don't do it but I love it!!

First time I did it with them was in 1989 in Miami. Went out west with her father and her brother to an illegal pig farm. The farmers were drinking whiskey at 6 am and calling me the gringo. Cooked it the next day in the La China cooker. What a delight. I have only missed it a few times in the last 27 years.  My family always had shellfish for Christmas eve. I cook the mussles, clams, shrimp and oysters on the hot coals while cooking the pig. Shuck a bunch of raw ones too. Have to have some southern collard greens too cooked with smoked turkey tails.

Xmas morning was always salt mackerel with browned butter and home fries.

Family tradition, don't know how it started.

I miss my Parents.

As a kid we always had Xmas dinner with Uncle Jim and Aunt Mary, but I never really focused on the food. We always had ham or turkey, I believe. Nowadays our kids always require us to make our home-made egg rolls with chicken/cabbage filling, so I guess that's our tradition now..

Not Polish but my Italian father does the feast of the 7 fishes. 30 years later he still hasn't figured out that most of the family are not big fish eaters and the left overs could feed a small neighborhood for a week.

>make our home-made egg rolls with chicken/cabbage filling

Easiest egg rolls -- bag of coleslaw, minced garlic and ginger, a little peanut butter and a few sprinkles of soy sauce.  Roll and fry.

Candy canes at Christmas time.

no traditions-- I'm "home alone" this year so I'm going to try a small standing rib roast --- red wine

Our family tried the seven fishes in honor of my Italian brother in law.  We finally settled on shrimp cocktail.  Buon Natale!
